The education system in Australia consists of a total of 12 years. Primary schools and high schools are based on the age of the student, so that every room has the same age group, with a student hardly ever having to repeat a year. The students with problems in their studies may be put into special classes. Most of the children start primary school at the age of 5. Then the student goes for secondary school at the age of 12 or 13. Well, the subject of the education system is too broad. Today I’d like to focus on the school system in Australia. The school system in Australia does depend on whether you go to a private or a public school. In the state, there are a lot of private schools, and generally they’re single-sex high schools. The public high schools are generally mixed. All of the private high schools insist that you wear their school uniforms, and that might mean a school tie and a school jacket. However, the public high schools often give you a choice of whether you want to wear a uniform or not. The school classes generally start anywhere between 8: 30 and 9 o’clock in the morning, and run until 3: 30 in the afternoon, and they’re followed by after-school activities like sports and music and theater. The school year generally starts in the beginning of February, after the summer vacation. The summer vacation lasts about six weeks, and it’s around the Christmas period.

Looking good, feeling good
Born to a model mom and a suit maker dad, fashion was actually in my blood. I always had a strong desire to dress in a certain way and to stand out from the crowd.
I made my own toys when I was a young child and sewed my first skirt at just 10 years old. A friend’s mother took one look at my skirt and told me that I should be a patternmaker. In high school I started making my own clothes, mostly changing other things because I never liked anything how it was when I bought it. During the last two years of school, I worked part-time for a small business that made hand-painted silk clothing and bags. The owner became the teacher who got me into design in the first place. Another useful bit of work experience then came when I worked at a showroom during fashion week and found it very exciting. From there I worked at a top clothing store while I got my business started.
For my business I started out with the idea that everything I did would be hand-made and one-of-a-kind, specially made for one individual who hopefully had the same tastes as me. Every morning I jumped out of bed, went to my studio and worked on my projects. This just showed how enthusiastic I felt about my work. And at night I even dreamed of new designs!
Fashion design is functional art. What I mean is that it’s something close to you and something you can touch and feel, and actually interact with. My advice to any young person who wants to be a fashion designer is to get the basic skills early on, such as sewing and pattern-making. Even if you end up specializing, it’s really important to understand all aspects of design in order to make high-quality clothes.
Also, if you dream of having your own clothing line, the best thing to do is start wearing your clothes. You have to try and do this because that’s the way you’re going to develop something that’s all yours and unlike anyone else’s. I passionately believe that the right clothing can make people feel better and give them more confidence.
24. When the author was in high school, she ______.
A. wore the latest fashions
B. was fond of hand-painted clothing
C. began to make clothes on her own
D. dressed in the same way as her classmates
25. What does the underlined word “functional” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Practical. B. Standard. C. Decorative. D. Complex.

A. Creating basic designs in high school.
B. Wearing high-quality clothes all the time.
C. Looking at what their friends are wearing.
D. Deciding what is unique about their clothes.
27. According to the author, well-designed clothes _______.
A. cost people a lot of money
B. bring people great success
C. provide people with popular taste
D. help people feel sure of themselves
C 25. A 26. D 27. D

I decided at 10 that I was going to be a teacher because I had a burning desire for superpowers. As a boy, I could clearly see some of my teachers had extraordinary powers.
There was an English teacher in fifth grade who could magically transport us to different worlds every day by telling us stories and reading to us from books we would otherwise never pick up. This was our secret and fun time because fifth graders were considered too old to have stories read out to them.
It was even shocking that my teacher could see the invisible. I was one of those who lacked insight. Yet my teacher would notice me and the unspoken message in her eyes suggested that she could see me through. She had another superpower and even after four decades, I could still vividly remember her lessons about the great masters of art and great geographers, expanding our horizons. She did this even though her major was not art, nor geography. Her lessons went beyond the textbook. 1 knew 1 wanted to be one of those all-seeing ones with superpowers that made children feel safe and valued.
I know being a teacher isn't the easiest or the most financially rewarding of jobs. And there are occupational risks- your knees can become worn out from years of carrying piles of notebooks up and down the school staircase, your voice can give in from too much talking. But despite all that, there are those choosing this cause. To them, teaching is not just a job-it is a science, an art and a craft, and it demands emotional labour and investment.
All my life, for three decades now, I've gone to work early each day with a spring in my step. Occasionally, I meet my former students. Their obvious love for me and fond memories of our time together are my rewards. When I meet others who thirst for superpowers, like the brand new teacher struggling to perfect her skills with a brave face on, or the one in a remote, rural school travelling 70 kilometers each day just for his pupils, I feel proud to belong to the same group.
28. What can be inferred about the stories from paragraph 2?
A. They were told in a magic way. B. They were written by the teacher.
C. They contained some students' fun secrets. D. They left the students with happy memories.
29. Which of the following best describes the English teacher?
A. Well-informed and observant. B. Hard-working and courageous.
C. Ambitious and aggressive. D. Caring and demanding.

A. He suffered a lot in his knees and voice.
B. He thought teaching was more than spreading knowledge.
C. He had some ideas of how to be a teacher at a young age.
D. He was rewarded with much money for his devotion at school.
31. What can be concluded about being a teacher from the text?
A. Learning without a teacher is hard to gain.
B. In scholarship there is no difference of age.
C. Teachers lead the door, progress in the individual.
D. With one thousand times for the peach garden sweet.
D 29. A 30. B 31. D

D
Food blogs, celebrities, and nutritionists all advocate the benefits of eating organic (有机的) fruits and vegetables. But a new study published in Science Advances paints a more complex picture. While organic produce is likely slightly healthier to eat and, in some ways, more sustainable to grow, there are also downsides.
Organic fruits and vegetables typically cost more than conventional ones. To get a certificate as organic, farmers must meet specific criteria, including growing produce without the use of genetic engineering and chemical inputs. Without these methods, the growing process typically requires more labor, time, and money, a cost that is passed down to consumers.
It’s true that in many ways, organic is more sustainable than conventional farming. But when it comes to environmental concerns such as greenhouse gas output and water loss, the comparison gets complex. Organic farms produce less greenhouse gas output per acre. However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides (杀虫剂), and other methods that increase efficiency (效率), organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms. While there isn’t a whole lot research on the topic, the few studies that do exist suggest green gas output and water loss might actually be higher on organic farms, on a per unit basis, says study author Verena Seurfert.
In addition, while organic produce is likely more nutritious than conventional fruit and vegetables, there’s not a lot of evidence to support the claim that these often slight differences influence consumer health. The same is true for pesticide remainder. In developed countries, where pesticide use is tightly regulated, there’s no scientific consensus on how these often slight differences influence human health.
Still, Seurfert stresses that if you can afford to eat organic, you should do so. Organic farms provide safer work environments for workers, plus they support great biodiversity. The real takeaway from her study is not that organic is bad but that the practice needs more studies to increase yield without lowering sustainability.
But if you can’t afford to buy organic produce, don’t stress too much, particularly from a nutritional perspective.
32. What does the underlined word “downsides” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Dangers. B. Drawbacks. C. Benefits. D. Differences.
33. Which key factor makes it hard to compare organic farming and conventional farming when it comes to environmental concerns?
A. The yield. B. The price. C. The water loss. D. The labor.
34. Which of the following will the author most probably agree with?
A. Farmers, work environment should be improved.
B. Organic produce should be made more efficiently.
C. It isn’t wise for consumers to buy organic products.
D. Pesticide remainder does no harm to people’s health.
35. In the author’s opinion, why should we support organic produce?
A. It’s environmentally friendly. B. It’s more nutritious.
C. It helps keep the variety of plants. D. It’s safer for consumers.
B 33. A 34. B 35. C

第一段最后一句“While organic produce is likely slightly healthier to eat and, in some ways, more sustainable to grow(有机农产品吃起来可能稍微更健康,在某种程度上,种植起来更可持续)”表示转折关系,说明有机植物也有不利之处。
However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides, and other methods that increase efficiency , organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms.(有机农场每英亩产生的温室气体更少。然而,由于禁止使用基因工程、杀虫剂和其他提高效率的方法,有机农场的产量也比传统农场低19% - 25%)”和文章倒数第二句“The real takeaway from her study is not that organic is bad but that the practice needs more studies to increase yield without lowering sustainability.(从她的研究中得出的真正结论不是有机食品不好,而是需要更多的研究来提高产量,而不降低可持续性)”可知,尽管有机植物产生的温室气体较少,但是有机植物的产量较低。 故选A。
根据第三段第四句“However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides, and other methods that increase efficiency, organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms.(有机农场每英亩产生的温室气体更少。

What consumers expect when they see a food makes the palate(额)taste certain flavors. The strong associations between color and flavor are well established in the scientific community. Research on the subject dates back to the 1970s. For example, consumers expect yellow foods to be sour and black foods to be bitter.
Branding, packaging and color quality of the product itself play a big part in creating and maintaining expectations. Food brands have long understood this and worked to establish standards. Federal regulations grade the color of orange juice. Businesses provide color- matching services for companies to select the right color for a particular product. In some cases, color can overpower other senses and convince people they taste flavors that aren't there.
The Penn State researchers set out to confirm long-standing research into the relationship between color and taste. And they found what consumers see when they eat matters as much as—if not more than—what they taste, and the links could be more flexible than many thought in some cases.
"This might have potential impacts in the food industry if a company were to launch a new flavoured product with a color. Some consumers might not learn or accept a new color and flavor pairing(配对)as well as others Penn State Food Science doctoral candidate Molly J. Higgins said in a written statement.
Although it may be possible to completely change food colors, it may not be advisable. According to this study, 40% of consumers would be left behind, stuck on familiar patterns. That's a big risk for food brands to take. Consumers tend to want to know what they're in for when they select a product—and color is a big part of that. While it's interesting that consumer expectations of colors could change, the risk of unexpected colors is high for any company.
Many food brands rely on visual expectations to pull customers into unfamiliar products. A hamburger that copies the appearance and color of a beef patty (小馅饼)will cause a different reaction than a green-colored veggie(素食者)--dense alternative. But while today's consumers have expectations of flavors of items with different colors, they also have expectations that natural materials are used. While these materials are often preferable, they present a challenge. General Mills changed artificial dyes (染料)to natural ones in Trix cereal. Consumer anger followed. Many found the earthier tones depressing, despite no change in flavor. Chemicals and all, they wanted the original back. The company eventually switched back, choosing to treat color as being more important than other things.

C. Companies should release new products regularly.
D. Not all consumers welcome a new color-taste pairing.
38. Why is General Mills mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To stress the challenges facing food companies.
B. To stress the difficulty in using natural materials.

D 37. D 38. C 39. B
根据第二段中的“Branding, packaging and color quality of the product itself play a big part in creating and maintaining expectations”产品本身的品牌、包装和色彩质量在创造和维持人们的期望方面发挥着重要作用。
根据第四段中的“This might have potential impacts in the food industry if a company were to launch a new flavoured product with a color. Some consumers might not learn or accept a new color and flavor pairing as well as others”这可能会对食品行业产生潜在的影响,如果一个公司要推出一种带有颜色的新调味产品。
根据最后一句的“The company eventually switched back, choosing to treat color as being more important than other things”该公司最终又恢复了原样,选择把颜色看得比其他东西更重要。
文章第一段中的“The strong associations between color and flavor are well established in the scientific community.”颜色和味道之间的强烈联系已经在科学界得到了很好的证实;第三段中的“the relationship between color… and taste the links could be more flexible than many thought in some cases.”
因此,考生直接抓住第一段中的“The strong associations between color and flavor are well established in the scientific community.”

上文“People are praised for being fashionable and pretty — few are praised for expanding our limits and coloring outside the lines.(人们因为时尚和漂亮而受到称赞——很少有人因为扩大我们的极限和超越界限而受到称赞)”讲很少有人因突破界限而受到称赞,F项“Criticism is going to happen if you step outside of the box at all.(如果你走出了框框,批评就会发生)”进一步进行说明,其中“step outside of the box”与上文“expanding our limits and coloring outside the lines”相照应,符合上下文连贯。

A few seconds remained and the score was tied. Players gathered near the goal. Suddenly Devin saw a clear opening to the goal. He struck the ball hard and held his breath as it flew toward the upper corner of the net.
Goal!
Three seconds later, the judge blew the whistle. Game over.
"Championship game, here we come!" said Tara, slapping hands with Devin. "Can't wait till Thursday."
Devin grinned. Thursday would be huge—the big soccer game in the afternoon, and the school's autumn concert in the evening. Ms. Poltis had chosen Devin to sing a song alone.
"Great work," Coach said as the team gathered. "Be here by 6:30 on Thursday to warm up." "It's a night game," Coach explained. "Under the lights."
Devin's heart sank. The concert was at 7:00. Same time as the game. He couldn't possibly do both. His teammates were super excited. They were on the edge of a title. He couldn't disappoint his team by skipping the game.
That night, Devin lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The lyrics struck him and he began to sing:
"No matter how hard the struggle, I will never let you down..."
He liked the song, and he appreciated how kind Ms. Poltis always was. Devin knew the words by heart, but the thought of singing alone made him tremble. Sometimes he was nervous about participating in sports, too, but that always went away as soon as a game started. He'd never sung a solo before. It was a relief to know he didn't have to now. The soccer game was a perfect excuse. But so was Ms. Poltis. It was long time before he fell asleep.
注意:
(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2
On Thursday evening, Devin felt a little nervous to see so many people in the concert hall.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Devin went straight to the music room. "I am not the best singer and I have to..." Devin hesitated with his eyes fixed on the floor. Ms. Poltis smiled warmly, "I choose you because you work hard, like the person in the song. So don't be nervous!" Devin raised his head and looked at her, tears welling up in his eyes. It was at that moment that Devin made his final decision. Later that day, Devin went to his coach and teammates. Unexpectedly, they welcomed him and promised that they would spare no effort to win the title.
On Thursday evening, Devin felt a little nervous to see so many people in the concert hall. Devin took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. The bright light coming on, Devin calmed down and sang with confidence. Devin handled the solo perfectly. Hardly had he finished the last word of the song when a wave of applause erupted from the audience. Devin smiled at Ms. Poltis and felt proud of the choice he had made. No matter how hard the struggle, you have to make a decision and never let yourself down.
