This month in Travelers Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.
Mariko Okada---Tokyo
My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.
Carla Fonseca---Rio de Janeiro
I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m I glad to be home!
Alvin Chen---Hong Kong
Studying in New Zealand was an interesting experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week---with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my home stay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went!
21. All the three teenagers went abroad _________.
A. to have a holiday B. to visit friends C.to study English D. to find a job
22. Who didn’t really enjoy the stay in a foreign country very much?
A. Carla B. Mariko. C. Alvin. D. None of them.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair-weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding. I know I’ve found a friend!
24. Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing a friend?
A. Understanding. B. Honesty C. Reliability. D. A sense of humor.
25. If you have fair-weather friends, _________.
A. they will give you all that they have when you need help

A. Being honest. B. Understanding. C. Reliability. D. Sharing
27. This passage mainly discusses ________
A. the qualities of a friend B. where to choose friends
C. how to get along with friends D. the importance of having a friend

My two daughters and I got into the car to spend our weekend in Florida. Autumn, the elder one, offered to drive. I sat next to her, and Amber sat in back. After setting out, the three of us sang to the radio at the top of our voice.
It was a great trip until the rain poured and the rain was to heavy. “I have to pull over.” Autumn said. She tried to enter the far right lane (车道) to find a place to stop, but trucks ran fast, making water onto our car. The car was out of control, then worse -- it started to move left and right. Autumn fought to control it but it was too late. We ran into a truck. The girls jumped out of the car. My chest felt much pain.
“Get out, Mom. Come on!” Amber cried. “I can’t.” I said. Autumn took out her cellphone. “There’s been an accident. Send an ambulance (救护车)!” Amber and Autumn pulled me out of the car and helped me lie on my back in the grassy area by the roadside. I had to calm myself and looked up. A man held a large umbrella over me and other kind faces appeared above me. A woman helped to treat a cut over Amber’s eye. Another woman came close to me and said, “No one in the truck was injured. Help was on the way.” The woman mentioned she was a nurse; the other woman who took care of Amber’s cut was an eye specialist. We couldn’t have asked for better care.
In the hospital the pain in my chest began to disappear. Later, the tests at the hospital made sure we had no serious injuries. We’d left all our troubles behind thanks to these kind people, who seemed to be angels (天使) in my eyes.
28. How did the author and her two daughters feel after setting out?
A. They were worried about the weather. B. They enjoyed themselves greatly.
C. They thought it was a long journey. D. They felt lucky to take the journey.
29. What’s Autumn going to do when the rain poured?
A. To stop by the roadside. B. To follow the truck closely,
C. To get into the fast traffic lane. D. To move the car left and right.
30. Which is TRUE according to the accident?
A. The author herself drove the car. B. It was raining heavily.
C. A nurse held a large umbrella to help. D. The truck driver was badly injured.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Unexpected heavy rain B. Leave our troubles behind
C. Kind angels saved the day D. My two kind daughters

People in Japan tend to live longer and stay healthier in their later years, with an increasing number of old people living alone. Japan is on a fast track to “ultra-age”(老龄化) with people aged 65 or above accounting for 28 percent of its total population in 2019; it was 26.7 percent in 2017. On the other hand, the number of births in 2019 fell to its lowest (about 941,000) since records began in 1899.
Demand for care services for elderly people has increased. A shrinking (缩小) working population means fewer able-bodied adults are available to look after the elderly. State-provided facilities (国有设施) for the elderly are not enough, which causes elderly people to turn to private ones but they are expensive.
The country will be short of 380,000 of health nurses by2025. The government has to turn to advanced robots to meet the shortage. A study found that using robots encouraged one third of the people to become more active and independent. Yet there is no robot that can provide the emotional support to the elderly
Japan provides a case study for China. which is also faced with a fast aging population. 17.23 million babies were born in China in 2019, about 630,000 fewer than in 2018. People aged 60 accounted for 17.3 of China’s population in 2019. With a shortage of elderly care facilities and unbalanced supply, China may find it hard to deal with the rapidly increasing number of senior citizens.
To meet the challenge, the Chinese government should make policy changes, which Japan is unwilling or unable to do or even consider. China should pay attention to the signals its aging population is sending and take proper and timely action.
32. What do we learn about the old Japanese?
A. more and more old Japanese prefer to live on their own.
B. A lot of old Japanese have to continue working at old age.
C. Some old Japanese remain active with the help of robots.
D. Japanese aged 65 or above make up one third of its population.
33. What can we know about state-provided care facilities for the elderly in Japan?
A. They are expensive. B. They are inconvenient.
C. They are affordable. D. They are fashionable.
34. What do the Japanese do to deal with the shortage of health nurses?
A. They hire foreign health nurses. B. They employ advanced robots.
C. They set up more nursing schools. D. They train the elderly to tend themselves.
35. What is the main idea of the last two paragraph?
A. Japan has to take action to deal with the aging population.
B. Robots can’t provide emotional support to the elderly.
C. China is now faced with a fast aging population.
D. Japan’s aging population issue is a timely lesson for China.

Many teenagers may have a very confusing time filled with worries in high school. Here are some tips which can help you succeed in the years.
36 You may be faced with too many choices in your life and it’s unwise to try everything. Just focus on your favorite. Consider all the benefits that it brings into your life and then see how you can develop your passion into a possible job choice.
Get away from the friends that offer unfriendly advice and negativity (否定性). There is no place for that kind of behavior at any stage of your life. And you should value yourself highly enough to get rid of these people. 37
Read as much as you can. Pick up a book on anything that increases your knowledge. Stop spending hours in watching your favorite TV shows. 38 You’ll notice in a few days how you begin to see things in a different way.
Limit the time spent on social media. I am 19 years old, so I understand just how much time can be wasted on technology, especially the Internet and cellphones. 39 Instead once you spend that time improving yourself, your life begins to shape and turn into exactly what you want it to be.
Make mistakes. Look at a mistake you’ve made from every possible way and take the lessons from it. 40 You can’t achieve this by trying to be perfect all the time. It’s okay to make mistakes.
A. Get ready to try different things.
B. Know yourself and pick a direction.
C. Instead use that time to improve yourself by reading.
D. Spend less time doing things that add no value to your life.
E. This does wonders for self-confidence and overall positivity (积极性).
F. Your teenage years are meant to be spent getting to know yourself.
G. It’s important for you to work hard to improve your scores in your study.

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A Great Monday
Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math test that day. I was confident that I would get a high mark. I left my house, and minutes later, I was sitting with my friends on the school bus. We were busy talking about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, a boy named Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped (绊倒) over someone’s foot and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan picked himself up, dusted his jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment.
The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. It wasn’t long before the lunch bell rang. I met my friends from the cheerleading (啦啦操) team in the dining hall.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans (牛仔裤) was torn down in the middle of my backside.
I froze (僵住). I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my broken jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

Dear John,
I’m sorry to hear that you are lonely in a new school because you find it quite hard to make friends.
Therefore/Hence, I write this letter, hoping to offer you some advice to adapt to the new environment.
Frankly speaking, it is quite normal for you to feel lonely because you are living in a new environment now. First of all, in order to make friends soon, you should show your friendliness to others. Besides, it will be a good idea to greet teachers and classmates whenever you meet them on campus. From my perspective, it will be wise of you to actively express your ideas in class and participate in class activities. In conclusion, I hope that my suggestions are of great help to you.
I have the confidence that you can deal with these problems soon and everything will be fine with you in the future.

读后续写
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly the scene struck me where he fell flat and I laughed at him crazily. Thinking he would join in with those laughing at me, I lowered my head, my face burning with embarrassment. However, Ryan just approached me from behind, quickly took off his jacket, offered it to me and signaling to me to cover my torn jeans. Struggling against my tears, I did want to express my gratitude to him but courage failed me. Finally, I left the courtyard in total/absolute silence.
Paragraph 2:
That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan. I thanked him for giving me his jacket and returned it to him. Gathering my courage, I sincerely apologized to him for my misconduct on the bus, and thanked him for helping me out of an equally embarrassing situation. Ryan, with a broad smile, patted me on the shoulder and told me to forget about it, joking he fell like that a lot. I admired his honesty and sense of humour. It was then that I decided he was someone I could be great friends with. Honestly, Monday was a great day indeed!
