Rock climbing, one of the fastest growing sports, not only builds physical strength and mental focus, but also leads you to some beautiful places. Here are some climbing spots for climbers.
Acadia National Park, Maine
This popular New England park is one of the few places where you can climb seaside rocks. The granite (花岗岩) is good for climbing. In some areas, you need to start when the sea is at its lowest level. The area has guides, instructors and climbing schools, making it particularly welcoming for beginners.

Red River Gorge, Kentucky
This geological area in Daniel Boone National Forest is prized for its climbing routes and rock scenery. The park, located an hour’s drive southeast of Lexington, is well-known in the climbing world for both beginner-friendly terrain(地形) and more challenging sections. It’s a place where you can find a lot of fellow climbers.

This national reserve near the Utah border is worth a trip for the scenery alone. Named by gold miners heading to California in 1849, its granite looks like skyscrapers, towering 600 feet above the ground. It’s a fascinating area from a geologic and geographic angle. Many visitors come for August’s Idaho Mountain Festival, a celebration of climbing with top athletes in attendance.

It was a hot Summer day a few years ago. I had just pulled into the local gas station to fill my tank. After pumping the gas I started to walk inside to pay. That is when I noticed them. Two elderly women stood back from their car. There was a mixture of shock, fear, and horror on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw. Five yellow jackets had started to build a nest around their gas cap. My eyes widened. I shared the ladies’ fear.
Yellow jackets had never been friends of mine. Several times these bad tempered wasps(黄蜂) had attacked me while I was mowing my lawn giving me multiple stings(叮咬) each time I ran over their ground nests. They are the reason why I never repair my lawn in shorts anymore. The worst time, however, happened when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and I were running and playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their hidden nests again because before I knew it both of us were being chased and stung over and over by the yellow jackets while we ran away screaming. I ran to my Mom with tears in my eyes. She immediately ran a cold bath and put us both in it to ease the pain and itching( 发痒) before giving us medicine to fight all the poison in our little bodies from the stings.
Still, I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my back pocket for a paper towel I had there, tore out the nest and stepped on it while the angry wasps buzzed around me. Both of the ladies thanked me and I said, “You’re welcome!” with a smile and a happy heart.
24. Why were the two elderly ladies scared in the oil station?
A. They couldn’t find the way back home.
B. They couldn’t afford the things they wanted.
C. They were afraid of being stung by some pests.
D. They were afraid of being forced out of the room.
25. What did the writer do in case of being stung when repairing the lawn?
- Wear a mask B. apply some medicine
C. wear shorts. D. wear thick and long clothes.
26. Which of the following word can best describe the writer’s early experience?
- Lucky B. miserable C. exciting D. encouraging
27. How did the writer drove away the wasps?
A. By spraying some medicine
B. By destroying their homes.
C. By covering their nests with paper.
D. By burning down them.
C
As data and identity theft become more and more common, the market is growing for biometric (生物测量) technologies---like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces. At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.
Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device that gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence(节奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the forces of a user’s typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people’s identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it’s connected to --- regardless of whether someone gets the password right.
It also doesn’t require a new type of technology that people aren’t already familiar with. Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.
In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word “touch” four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.
28. Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard?
A. To reduce pressure on keys. B. To improve accuracy in typing.
C. To replace the password system. D. To cut the cost of e-space protection
29. What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible?
A. Computers are much easier to operate.
B. Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.
C. Typing patterns vary from person to person.
D. Data security measures are guaranteed.
30. What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard?
A. It will be environmentally-friendly
- It will reach consumers soon.
- It will be made of plastics.
- It will help speed up typing.
31. Where is this text most likely from?
- A diary B. a guidebook C. a novel D. a magazine
D
We know that China is the largest and fastest-growing consumer market in the world. What is less well understood are the forces that shape consumerism in the world’s most populous country. In my view, there are some social and cultural aspects at play that drive consumer spending.
Consumerism is related to freedom. To have a choice means to have consumer choice. You are what you consume. Consumption is an expression of self. It allows you to explore the world through its products, to experiment with lifestyle choices, and to do so safely and anonymously(匿名). You might never get to France, but you can try French wine. California might be far, but you can go to Shanghai Disneyland. Indeed, the enthusiasm for choice is reflected in the enthusiasm Chinese consumers have for online shopping.
Consumerism is a statement of success. American economist Thorstein Veblen popularized the concept of “conspicuous consumption”. When consumption is no longer driven only by need, it becomes a way of making a statement that you have disposable(可自由支配的)income and you can ---at least in certain respects---enjoy life on your terms. Simple pleasures---a pair of shoes, a smartphone, designer clothing --- become statements of personal identity.
The collective experience is focused. We like participating in group events. FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, goes beyond cultures. But I suspect this trend is stronger in China than in the West because Confucian culture does not celebrate outsiders as the West’s culture does. Social media reinforce(强化)this collective pattern so that shopping and dining are shared experiences. Opinions are crowd-sourced. And the merchants reinforce this pattern by supporting holiday sales, group buying, and other promotions.
Successful brands in China are able to handle most or all of the above considerations. The consumer must not only be delighted with your product. The journey of the consumer must also respect these socio-cultural aspects.
32. What’s mainly talked about in the passage?
A. Chinese are growing wealthier.
B. China’s fast-growing market economy.
C. Chinese socio-cultural influences on consumerism.
D. Chinese consumers’ preference for quality rather than quantity.
33. What does Paragraph 2 focus on ?
A. Shopping online is a new experience.
B. Consumption can be a reflection of freedom.
C. Foreign products can be purchased in China.
D. Shopping around the world is a favorable choice.
34. What do the underlined words “conspicuous consumption” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. The ability to cover one’s real need in daily life.
B. Spending money in order to keep up with others.
C. The purchase of expensive items to display status.
D. Buying plenty of goods and delivering them to others.
35. Why does the author suspect FOMO is stronger in China?
A. Social media play a bigger role in their lives.
B. Following the trend is what people like better.
C. Chinese people have less contact with the strangers.
D. Confucian culture is less likely to appreciate outsiders.
第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的七个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
Think of the last time you disagreed with another person. Maybe you argued with a sibling (兄弟;姊妹)over what to watch on TV. _________________36____________________. How did your disagreement end? Were you able to see the issue(争论的问题)from the other person’s viewpoint?
_________________37_____________________. They’re part of life. After all, everyone has different opinions. We all have past experiences that shape how we see the world. Still, not all disagreements are bad. In fact, many people look at them as opportunities to learn. They do so by trying to understand where both sides are coming from.
How can you understand both sides of an issue? Often,it’s best to start by asking questions. Questions help us learn about the world around us. _____________38_______________. In a disagreement, asking for more information can help you learn about a person’s viewpoint. It can also lead you to gather more facts. This can paint a better picture of the entire issue.
When seeking to understand both sides of an issue, it’s important to know the difference between facts and opinions. Remember, facts are based on true information. Opinions can change from person to person. Paying attention to facts can stop biases(偏见)from taking over in a disagreement. ____________________39__________________________.
Maybe you’re wondering why it’s important to understand both sides of an issue, anyway. After all, don’t most people just want to prove that their side is right? Often, that’s true. However, understanding the whole issue can lead to both sides working together.
_________________40__________________________. However, when both sides truly try to understand each other, they often find they have more in common than they thought. The next time you disagree with another person, try asking him questions about their viewpoint. You never know what you might learn.
- Let’s agree to disagree.
- Disagreements may be uncomfortable at first.
- In many situations, disagreements are unavoidable.
- The ability to ask the right questions reflects good thinking ability.
- Or perhaps you tried to convince grown-ups that ice cream makes a better dinner than vegetables.
- The right questions can also help us learn about other people.
- This can help everyone involved see both sides of the issue.
