Learning t say “yes, and”
When I first heard abut the imprvisatin (即兴交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared imprvising in frnt f strangers. Hwever, I knew I wanted t wrk as a science cmmunicatr after finishing my Ph.D., s it seemed like a perfect chance t learn hw t speak and cmmunicate with thers effectively. I signed up, knwing the experience wuld give me help.
During ur first class, we learned an imprtant cncept f imprvisatin: “yes, and.” It means that, as imprvisers, we’d better accept what fellw perfrmers say. If smene says that rhins (犀牛) are librarians, fr example, then rhins are librarians. We d nt questin the lgic; we say “yes” and then cntinue with the scene as if nthing is wrng.
The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned int mnths, I became mre cmfrtable and even started t enjy ur classes. I became better at listening, relating t my cnversatin partners, and cmmunicating clearly in the mment. Once when I was giving a presentatin abut my science, an audience member surprised me with a questin that didn’t grw ut f the infrmatin I’d presented. Instead f getting cnfused and nervus, I tk the “yes, and” apprach—accepting the questin and letting my mind fcus n why it was asked. That helped me find an apprpriate answer. I gt pretty excited abut it.
The benefits f imprvisatin g beynd cmmunicatin. Befre attending the class, I wuld get stuck when my experiments prduced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But nw, instead f getting discuraged, I will stay pen t the pssibility that the results are real, keep explring the data and end up identifying a new type f cell—ne that isn’t behaving as expected.
I think all scientists can benefit frm this lessn. If the data say rhins are librarians, then it’s wrth finding ut whether rhins are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, ur jb isn’t t challenge data that supprt, a precnceived stry, but t say “yes, and.”
4. Why did the authr attend the imprvisatin class?
A. T get a different experience.
B. T finish her Ph.D. at university.
C. T give up her jb as a science cmmunicatr.
D. T imprve her speaking and cmmunicating ability.

B. She came up with lts f creative respnses.
C. She paid mre attentin t the lgic f answers.
D. She became a gd listener befre giving an pinin.
6. The authr mentins applying the “yes, and” apprach t her scientific experiments t ________.
A. explain the prcess f using the methd
B. prve the benefits f the imprvisatin class
C. share her wn research experiences with readers
D attract fellw scientists t attend the imprvisatin class
7. What can be inferred abut scientists frm the last paragraph?
A. They shuld attend the imprvisatin class.
B. They shuld questin all precnceived ideas.
C. They shuld carry n research by admitting earlier data.
D. They shuld try t imprve their academic knwledge.
T lk inside an ant nest is t meet with an alien civilizatin. The mass f wrker ants beneath an upturned stne is bth strangely reminiscent f (联想到) human sciety and strikingly different. There is an rganizatin that fascinates us and a lng line f myrmecphiles (r ant lvers) leads back all the way t King Slmn, wh in fact advised peple t “g t the ant, cnsider her ways and be wise”. This was exactly the inspiratin behind Planet Ant, a TV prgram shwcasing what we knw abut the kingdm f ants, and what ants can teach us abut the human wrld.
Like us, ants build structures, find fd, defend their scieties and manage waste, and — als like us — they must be well rganized. Fr example, the leaf-cutting ants f Planet Ant have special waste dispsal areas fr string harmful waste and a team f “waste-dispsal ants” are dedicated t keeping the nest clean. But ants achieve this familiar final result in a very different way t humans. Human scieties have centralized cntrl. In ther wrds, smene tells us what t d. Ants, n the ther hand, have decentralized cntrl and neither the queen nr any ther ant directs wrk. Ant wrkers are the final self-starters, fllwing specific, but ptentially flexible, rules in certain situatins.
Chemical trails supprt much f this self-rganizatin. Fragers (觅食者) lay a mix f chemicals knwn as the trail phermne (信息素) behind them as they walk. Other ants fllw the trail and if they find fd they reinfrce it, laying mre phermnes as they return t the nest. Strnger trails are mre likely t be fllwed, s trails leading t fd becme gradually reinfrced, while trails with n fd in the end fade away.
This prduces an effective fraging system that is very gd at finding the quickest rutes t fd. This simple guiding principle, and thers like it, have prvided sme useful slutins t the cmplex prblems faced by engineers, cmputer scientists and businesses.
8. Why des the authr mentin King Slmn in the first paragraph?
A. T prvide a backgrund.B. T shw admiratin fr him.
C. T stress the wisdm f ants.D. T explain an abstract thery.
9. Hw d ants behave while perfrming tasks?
A. They get rders frm their partners.B. They chse t d nly rutine tasks.
C They strictly fllw the queen’s rders.D. They fllw their wn senses and certain rules.
10. What infrmatin can we get abut the trail phermne frm the text?
A. It cmes frm the fd resurces.B. It appears befre ants’ self-rganizatin.
C It leads the fllwing ants t fd.D. It helps ants find their way back hme.
11. Wh des ants’ apprach t finding fd appeal t?
A. Nature lvers.B. Engineers.C. Bilgists.D. Explrers.
It has been knwn fr sme time that children are able t learn at breathtaking speed. But hw des it wrk? That’s what researchers have nw fund ut. Using an artificial intelligence tl and an eye-tracker that tracks the mvements f a baby’s eyes, scientists frm the Thunders Research Institute fr Brain, Cgnitin and Behavir investigated ne f children’s greatest mysteries and came t a surprising cnclusin.
It may seem very different, but babies are certainly nt lying arund randmly. “Babies dn’t explre the wrld by chance, with their eyes falling n it. Babies have a strategy if they want t understand the wrld. First, they lk fr thse pieces f infrmatin that allw them t understand ther infrmatin faster and mre efficiently. On the cntrary, if they see an bject r event frm which they can learn nthing further, they simply reject it. Only the infrmatin useful t them, they select.” says Dr Francesc Pli.
That sunds easier, even fr a baby, than dne. But hw des a baby knw what is imprtant and what is nt?
“Let’s take a gd example: learning t talk. What we see as always is that babies wh are abut t say their first wrd begin t investigate a few weeks befre hw t use their muths t talk. Instead f lking at the eyes in faces, they study carefully fr weeks the muths f the peple wh talk t them. S they are in a cnstant state f maximum learning capacity!”
“Babies build their knwledge. They are like little scientists wh like t see their idea challenged. Fr example, they learn very quickly that bjects fall dwn and dn’t just disappear. And this is why they lve bubbles (泡沫) s much: they d flat up and then disappear!”
12. What is the surprising cnclusin abut children?
A. They explre the wrld purpsefully.B. They are attracted t all infrmatin.
C. They are breathtakingly fast learners.D. They pssess exceptinal intelligence.
13. What des the underlined wrd “that” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
A. Studying further.B. Observing the wrld.
C. Learning strategically.D. Understanding infrmatin.
14. Why can bubbles fascinate babies greatly?

C. They prve what babies have just learned.D. They flat up quickly and dn’t just disappear.
15. Which wrd can best describe baby learners accrding t the authr?
A. Cnfident and ptimistic.B. Observant and capable.
C. Cnsistent and persistent.D. Dynamic and respnsible.
