Since it first opened after four years of construction in 1937 at a cost of $27 million, the Golden Gate Bridge has made its appearance in films and poetry.
CNN Travel spent a day climbing into and ground the bridge, learning these secrets from the people who know and love it best.
Why is it called the Golden Gate Bridge? It’s not golden.
“The Golden Gate Bridge gets its name because it spans what is called the Golden Gate Strait,”said Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz,spokesman for the Golden Gate Bridge,Highway and Transportation District, which operates the bridge. It’s a three-mile-long and one-mile-wide body of water that connects the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco Bay.
What color is the bridge? It looks red.
“It’s not red, although you’re not crazy to think so. Visitors all call it red,”said Russell. “Back in the day,the US Navy, then part of the War Department, oversaw the waterways and wanted to paint this bridge black and yellow for high visibility,”said fellow painter Jarrod Bauer. “They ended up mixing paint to create the color International Orange, which is similar to the color of red lead,”he said.
Does the bridge get entirely painted every year?
No,and it doesn’t need to be. It’s true that the top coat has been fully repainted over time with new and environmentally-improved International Orange top coats.
Who performs bridge rescues?
McVeigh and his fellow ironworkers, the so—called“Cowboys of the Sky”,have that responsibility. McVeigh has lost count of how many troubled souls he’s been called to rescue over the past 17 years.
In September in 2018,the bridge started constructing a suicide(自杀)prevention system, also known as the safety net,to keep people from jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s expected to be completed in 2021.
21. What’s the true color of the Golden Gate Bridge?
A. Red. B. Red lead.
C. Black and yellow. D. International Orange.
22 Who can probably be called a hero on the Golden Gate Bridge?
A. McVeigh. B. Jarrod Bauer.
C. Russell. D. Paolo.
23. What can we know about the Golden Gate Bridge?
A. It is safer now because of the safety net.
B. It got its name because of its color.
C. It took much time and money to be built.
D. It needs to be repainted once a year.
D 22. A 23. C

John von Neumann was the oldest of 3 children of a banker, and his speed of learning new ideas and of solving problems stood out early .At 17, his father tried to persuade him not to become a mathematician because he may lead a poor life being a mathematician, and so von Neumann agreed to study chemlstry as well. In 1926, at 23, be received a degree in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in mathematics. From then on, mathematics provided well enough for him, and he never had to turn to chemistry.
In 1930, von Neumann visited Princeton University for a year and then became a professor there. His first book was published in 1932. In 1933, the Insdtute for Advanced Study wat formed, and be became one of the 6 full-time people in the School of Mathematics (Einstein was one of the others).
World War II hugely changed von Neumann's areas of interest. Until 1940 he had been a great pure (纯粹的)mathematician. During and after the war, he became one of the best mathematicians who put mathematics theories into practice. During the last part of the war he became interested in computing machines and made several fundamental contributions. After the war von Neumann continued his work with computers, and was generally very active in government service. He received many awards, was president of the American Mathematical Society and was a member of the Atomic Energy Commission. He died in 1957 of cancer.
Von Neumann made several great contributions and any one of them would have been enough to earn him a firm place in history. He will be remembered as one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.
Von Neumann really was a legend (传奇)in his own time, and there are a number of stories about him. His driving ability is a part of this legend. From self-driving cars to carebots (care+robots) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat (威胁) to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia-Pacific. A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates. But the report states, “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs—just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research. “The growth of companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,” it states.
A 2014 report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report’s co-author.
“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft’s Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The result of job reduction.
B. The fast development of AI.
C. The future life of elderly people.
D. The influence of technology on jobs.
29. What will people most probably do in the future?
A. Take the place of AI.
B. Work in a traditional way.
C Take up jobs requiring creativity.
D. Enjoy life without working anymore.
30. What can be known from Grudin’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Job unemployment will stay high.
B. More jobs tend to appear in the future.
C. Job competition is likely to grow fiercer.
D. Technology will have less control over jobs.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Are People Losing Their Jobs?
B. The Requirements for Future Jobs
C. The Challenging Life in the Future
D. Does Technology Simplify Everything?
D 29. C 30. B 31. A

Mirroring body language is a way to bond and to build understanding. It is a powerful tool that we use without even knowing it.
The most obvious forms of mirroring are yawning and smiling. When you see someone yawn, you are likely to yawn immediately. Smiling is also pretty contagious-seeing a smiling person makes you want to smile too.
Mirroring body language is a nonverbal way to say “I am like you, I feel the same”. Research shows that people who experience the same feelings are likely to trust, understand and accept each other.
Women have the natural ability to pick up and understand body signals. Therefore, it is not surprising that a woman is more likely to mirror another woman than a man is to mirror another man. That's why women are regarded as better talkers, even if they might not really have more close friends.
It is interesting that when a man tries to mirror a woman's body language while she is talking, he may seem to her as caring, intelligent and attractive.
Mirroring body language is an excellent way to build trust and understanding quickly. If you want to set up a connection with a new person, mirror his or her gestures, sitting position, tone of voice and talking pace. This will make them feel that there is something about you that they like.
While mirroring body language gains you acceptance, you still need to take into consideration your relationship with the person you are mirroring. If you are in a lower social position and are mirroring the body language of your boss, he will view you as arrogant. However, if you want to defeat those who are trying to prove superior to you, mirroring their body language will help defeat them and change their position.
32. What does the underlined word “contagious” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Affecting each other. B. Powerful to show one's feelings.
C. Attractive to the others. D. Being gentle to people around.
33. When copying others' body language, one usually can ______.
A. send wrong messages B. hide true feelings
C. win others' acceptance D. avoid misunderstanding
34. What might happen if you try to mirror your boss's body language?
A. You will appear very attractive. B. It will help to soften his position.
C. You will seem unacceptably proud. D. It will be a good way to build trust.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. It is important to copy the others' gestures.
B. Why women are regarded as better talkers.
C. Men is not good at nonverbal communication.
D. Mirroring body language can be a useful tool.
A 33. C 34. C 35. D

根据前文“In an online survey, about 1,000 participants were conducted by CBNData in June 2021.(第一财经数据中心于2021年6月开展了一项约1000名参与者的在线调查。)” F“59% said they had experienced work-related stress and anxiety in the past year.(59%的人表示,他们在过去一年中经历了与工作相关的压力和焦虑。)”为具体结果,且在词汇上,“work-related stress”与前文“stress from life and work”为同义复现。故选F项。
根据后文“Staying in a wellness hotel is a healthy experience that allows people to relax physically and mentally, change themselves and become a positive influence to people around them.(住在健康酒店是一种健康的体验,可以让人们身心放松,改变自己,对周围的人产生积极的影响。)” E“The increased interest in wellness is driving changes in the hotel industry.(人们对健康越来越感兴趣,这推动了酒店业的变革。)”
根据前文“This opinion is shared by the majority of the respondents to a survey cited by CBNData.(CBNData引用的一项调查显示,大多数受访者都认同这一观点。)” G“It showed that 81% of them considered ‘sleeping well’ part of the definition of ‘healthy’.(调查显示,81%的人认为“睡眠好”是“健康”定义的一部分。)”
分析后文“They must cover the cycle from disease prevention, detection and treatment to health management.(它们必须涵盖从疾病预防、检测和治疗到健康管理的整个周期。)” A“Its services must start before check-in.(它的服务必须在登记入住前启动。)” 故选A项。

Jane was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She had two exams that day and physics was the first. She really hated physics. Her friend Terry looked at her from the front of the line, and then looked away quickly. Jane thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything… Miss Perfect!
“Hi, Jane, it’s your favorite exam today,” said Maya, laughing as she joined the line. Terry was looking at Jane again. “So what’s wrong with her?” asked Maya. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Jane. “but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me review for the physics exam too, but then she ignored all my calls and texts. She seemed to have forgotten who her friends are!” said Jane angrily. “Are you listening to me?” Mr. Richard was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Jane gave Maya a worried look and followed them.
Jane couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Jane couldn’t believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Terry, but she didn’t know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? “Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Richard as he started as he started to collect the exam papers.
Jane wanted to talk to Terry at lunch time, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Jane’s favorite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. She didn’t know what to do about Terry. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all the time.” thought Jane. Just then, Mr. Richard walked past her table. “Mr. Richard…”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Jane was sitting behind Tom again in the history exam that afternoon.

Paragraph 1:
Jane was sitting behind Tom again in the history exam that afternoon. Jane was feeling terrible. Mr. Richard wanted her to nod at him if she saw Terry cheating in the exam. Mr. Richard picked up her exam paper, tore it in half and told Terry to leave the classroom.
Paragraph 2:
Jane was walking towards the school gate, when she heard footsteps behind her. It was Terry. “Jane, please wait,” said Terry. “I’m really sorry I didn’t answer your calls. My dad has been in hospital for two weeks. He had a big heart operation today. I was reading texts from my mum to see how the operation was going. But Mr. Richard caught me. He thought I was cheating. He believes me now. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what was happening but I haven’t forgotten that we’re friends. Will you forgive me?”
