In early November of 1942, my geology (地质学) class was supposed to go on a field trip to see the mica mine (云母矿). Although it rained, everyone showed up on time. I was the only girl in the class. We all fit into two cars.
Near Deary, Mr. Tier, our teacher, went into a store to ask about the direction, while townsmen looked at us with curiosity. On the store owner’s advice, we drove out into the hills for a few miles. Then we left the cars. We were afraid they would get stuck in the mud.
Eventually, we located the mine near the top of the mountain. There was a very small hole, running about two or three hundred feet into the mountainside. The passage (通道) was so narrow that we could touch both sides with our hands, and not tall enough to allow us to stand up straight. The first boy held the torch; we took hold of the backs of each other’s coats, in a line, and followed him in, ducking our heads. After getting in, we were disappointed because it was not the mine our teacher was looking for.
The rain was coming down hard as we started back to the cars to go home. Back at Deary, we went into a drugstore and stood around its big heating stove to dry out. The clerk was a middleaged lady. Seeing our entirely wet hair and clothes, she handed each of us a cup of hot water immediately and asked if there was anything wrong with any of us.
Hiking eight miles in the rain had not reduced our interest at all. We all felt we had a wonderful time, even if we didn’t find the mine.
4. Why did the class leave the cars halfway?
A. Because their cars broke down in Deary.
B. Because it was not easy to drive in the mud.
C. Because townsmen were curious about their cars.
D. Because the store owner gave them a wrong direction.
5. What does the underlined word “ducking” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Turning. B. Touching. C. Lowering. D. Hitting.
6. Which of the following can best describe the clerk of the drugstore?
A. Impatient. B. Careless. C. Hardworking. D. Warmhearted.
7. What can we know from the passage?
A. The class failed to see the mica mine.
B. The weather terribly influenced the trip.
C. The teacher was not professional enough.
D. The author was not liked by her classmates.

Travel is fun and exciting, but it's not if you get sick. You may think,“Not me, I won't get sick on my vacation.”But for many people, that is what happens.
A vacation is supposed to be a time for relaxing. But very often it is not.“What can I do when I am a tourist?”This is what we should often think about.Usually there are so many places to visit:museums shops, parks and churches. You may spend most days walking around these places. This can be very tiring.Your feet may hurt. And you may have a terrible headache after a few hours. If this is what you feel, you should take a rest.Don't ask your body to do too much.A tired body means a weak body. And a weak body can make you get sick easily.Just sit down for a few hours in a nice spot.In good weather, look for a quiet park bench.Or you can rest at a café.You can learn a lot by watching people when you have a rest.
Sleep is also important. If you want to stay healthy you need enough sleep. You may have trouble sleeping at night when you travel.Your hotel room may be noisy, or the bed may be uncomfortable. If that is true, don't be afraid to change rooms or hotels. You may not get enough sleep for another reason. You may want to stay out late at night. In many cities the night life can be very exciting. Then you should plan to sleep for an hour during the day. That extra hour can make a big difference.
Finally, if you want to stay healthy, you must eat well. That means eating the right kinds of foods.Your body needs fresh fruit and vegetables, and some meat, milk or cheese. When you are in a new country you may want to try new foods but you need to be careful about how much you eat.Lots of rich food is not very good for you.
8. Travel is____________.
A. the best way to relax B. unhealthy
C. never any fun D. very tiring
9. It's a good idea to ________ when travelling.
A. spend every night in hotels. B. change hotels.
C. get some rest every day. D. take lots of medicine.
10. According to the passage, we can get to know the local people by ________.
A watching them B. visiting their homes
C. writing to them D. going to the shops
11. Which of the following is true to stay in good health on a vacation?________
A. Try not to visit every museum and church in a place.
B. Eat proper food, have enough sleep and rest.
C. Stay up late every night and sleep for an hour in the day.
D. Visit as many shops as you can.
D
Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.”
Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea how right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with “I’ll learn chess,” or “I’ll read an article on the mind every week.” Explain how that will help. You’ll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do this, you’ll have a better understanding of your brain twenty minutes from now.
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.
Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.
12. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A Way on How to Write
B. Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing
C. Increase Your Brain Power through Writing
D. How to Start Your Writing
13. According to the text, writing can help you a lot in the following ways EXCEPT ______.
A. the development of your interest in study B. the ability to remember
C. the increase of your brain power D. the better understanding of a topic
14. If a writer writes something, it means that he or she _______.
A. has understood it very well
B. is exercising his or her “explain power”
C. wants to remember it in his or her mind
D. needs to understand it better
15. The underlined sentence “you’re half-way there” in the fifth paragraph implies that ______.
A. you are already successful
B. you still need to work hard
C. writing is important to solve problems
D. writing can help you walk half way
