My doctor took me for a walk around the farm where she lives. I was physically and emotionally exhausted and discouraged by anxiety and depression.
The place was full of life. There were insects, horses, rabbits and a cat. She told me to focus on my body in the environment.
When I was ill, I tended to retreat into my mind and disconnect from here and now. So, when I met a horse named Fira, I expected nothing.
As I got closer to Fira, she nuzzled her nose into my chest, putting a gentle pressure over my heart. Something happened inside me: I felt as if I had reached a wellspring of past hurts, fears and failings. I began to melt emotionally.
I patted Fira’s nose and breathed in her smell. I found I didn’t have to concentrate on feeling better; Fira helped me feel loved and safe.
I worked with Fira often, learning basic communication and leading methods to work together with her. Initially, I wasn’t sure exactly what one would do with a horse except riding it. But I knew that Fira had touched me in an uncommon way and had made me feel better. She connected with me by responding to my emotional state and reflecting it back to me in an open, affectionate way.
In my meetings with Fira, I found that I lost my usual self-consciousness, and I would focus entirely on communicating.
I learned to live in the present, to focus on what was happening this day, in this moment, in this place. I learned to forget the past, with all its hurts. I learned to forget the future, which hasn’t happened yet. When you stand beside a horse, you exist completely in the moment.
With Fira by my side, I saw into a life in which trust comes first, and compassion follows.
I found a deep peace in leading her along a path, by using my own power of intention to indicate whether to start, stop, turn left or turn right. I felt an inner quiet and even joy. My work with this horse was part of a journey out of a very dark night in my soul.

A master of words, a literary genius and a philosopher, Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is known by many as the greatest writer of all time. Even in 2020, 110 years after his death, his two greatest masterpieces, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, continue to be widely read, appreciated and highly influential.
“If the world could write by itself, it would write like Tolstoy,” the Russian author Isaak Babel once said. Tolstoy’s realistic fiction is famous for its powers of observation and ability to mine the depths of human consciousness, such as the psychological exploration of a married woman in Anna Karenina. In War and Peace, Tolstoy also describes Russia’s national soul and expresses public unity through his many characters. His characters feel alive; they grow, they change and they stick in the minds of readers long after the final page is turned.
Tolstoy’s influence on literature is without comparison. Authors regularly mention his novels as their highest ambition works that they could only dream of writing themselves. American writer Francis Scott called Tolstoy the “greatest of all novelists” in his essay. He wrote, “from his first words, we can be sure of one thing at any rate – here is a man who sees what we see, who proceeds, too, as we are accustomed to proceeding, not from the outside inwards but from the inside outwards.”
“He defends fundamental values such as love, friendship and family relations. He gives positive answers to the questions mankind is asking. In this sense he gives more hope,” Tolstoy’s great-great grandson, Vladimir Ilyich Tolstoy, said.
Tolstoy’s message of peace has even had an effect on the real world. He inspired the leader of India’s independence movement, Mahatma Ghandi, and his philosophy of non-violence over the course of a year in which they wrote letters to each other.
8. What does the second paragraph intend to tell us?
A. The writing style of Tolstoy.
B. Tolstoy’s influence on other authors.

D. The introduction to the greatest works of Tolstoy.
9. Which words can best describe Tolstoy according to the passage?
A. Humorous and caring.
B. Determined and optimistic.
C. Productive and hard-working.
D. Insightful and peace-loving.
10. How does the author introduce Tolstoy in this passage?
A. By contrasting with other authors.
B. By analyzing characteristics of his works.
C By quoting comments and opinions.
D. By describing his deeds in life.
11. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Tolstoy and His Works
B. Tolstoy’s Life and Achievements
C. War and Peace: a Great Masterpiece
D. Tolstoy: a Writer Beyond Comparison
D
A competition making up Versailles literature was launched on Sina Weibo recently. So what is Versailles literature?
Actually, the term has nothing to do with the French palace nor with literature. It came from The Rose of Versailles, a Japanese manga series about aristocratic(贵族化的)life at the palace of Versailles in France in the late 18th century, and was coined by a Chinese influencer earlier this year. Known as humblebragging, it is a boast(吹牛)disguised as a complaint. “I have too many houses. How can I decide which one to decorate?” and “I thought I lost weight this morning. So disappointed when I realized it was because I took off the huge diamond ring my boyfriend gave me last night” are some examples of Versailles literature. The intention is to show off --- usually things of materialistic values, yet one ought to pretend that’s not the point.
As the 19th century English author Jane Austen famously wrote, “Nothing is more deceitful(欺诈的)than the appearance of humility(谦逊).” The psychology behind humblebragging is to be recognized for one’s successes and be liked by others at the same time, according to scholars. In her article titled Why do people hate humblebragging? published in Psychology Today, psychologist Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne at the University of Massachusetts Amherst noted that humblebragging is a “strategy in pursuit of respect” because it draws attention to one’s accomplishments in a circuitous way.
However, studies on social media users show that humblebragging as a self-promotion strategy does not work. In the essay Humblebragging: A distinct and ineffective self-presentation strategy, the University of North Carolina researcher Ovul Sezer and Harvard University scholars Francesca Gino and Michael Norton concluded from their research that humblebraggers are perceived more negatively than straight braggers due to the former’s insincerity. “The critical factor differentiating the two groups of people is sincerity. People don’t like braggers, but they at least see them as more sincere than humblebraggers,” said Francesca Gino.
So, how can we annoy humblebraggers back? “Just pretend you don’t get whatever it is they try to show off,” a netizen advised. “And respond with genuine sympathy for their complaints.”
12. Which of the following statements is typical of “Versailles literature”?
A. You know who my father is? My father is Li Gang.
B. Got five offers to date. I’m at a loss which to choose.
C. It’s a headache how to make my son tidy up his room regularly.
D. I’m fed up with living in the countryside with no shopping malls around.
13. What is the psychology behind humblebragging?
A. To win others’ sympathy. B. To earn others’ admiration.
C. To show his/her sincerity. D. To mask his/her complaint.
14. What does the underlined world “circuitous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Roundabout. B. Straightforward.
C. Ambiguous. D. Double-edged.
15. What can’t be inferred from the passage?
A. Braggers are relatively more sincere than humblebraggers.
B. Humblebragging is an artificial appearance of being humble.
C. To respond with real sympathy will discourage humblebraggers.
D. If you want to be perceived positively, avoid using Versailles literature.

"Missy," I cried to my wife, "did you put the banana skin on my desk?" "No, honey, Meghan probably did," As I'd feared, she had missed my real purpose of the question which was to make it clear to her that she hadn't done her job: defend my desk against the invader--our naughty girl.
I abandoned the conversation.
I sat here at the desk, and stared at the screen. I waited patiently for ideas to come to me, exam questions for a test I would give my English students. My wife was off to a reunion somewhere, but I was not alone. Meghan, our 22-month-old daughter, kept me company. Yet her plans that day seemed to go against mine.
She followed a daily routine that was both time-consuming and challenging. It included certain basic tasks: watching the fish, sweeping the carpet in her room, climbing up and down her bed.
At first I could concentrate on designing my test paper. But I was soon sidetracked(分心的). I had not counted on the arrival of the "bib-bibs" ("Bib-bibs" were birds). "Bib-bibs, bib-bibs!" Meghan screamed excitedly, her eyes alive with expectation. She insisted that I go with her to the window.
"In a second, just let me finish this question," I said. She pulled me by the hand (two fingers, actually) toward the window. I saw myself as a fool, being led to watch the bib-bibs. And we did watch them. They chattered and leaped back and forth on the lawn just outside our apartment window. Meghan was absorbed, but as I watched them, I still thought about my work.
Suddenly she rushed out from the room, and I heard her naked feet slapping against the wooden floor outside. She returned with her doll, Dumpty. She held him up to the window, stretching him out by his two arms and whispering into his nonexistent ear. "Bib-bibs, Dumpty, bib-bibs!" Then I left them in conversation and returned to my desk.
