Beethoven is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians. He completed 722 musical works. Unfortunately, the master died while still working on his 10th Symphony (交响曲). Now, a team of musicians and scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) to complete the artist’s final composition.
Dr. Matthias first came up with the idea to complete the composition in 2019. He thought it was an appropriate way to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday in December 2020. He began by enlisting an international team of music experts to help him with the giant task. They included music composer Walter and Dr. Ahmed, the creator of an innovative AI technology for the art market.
Ahmed and his colleagues started the process by familiarizing the AI software initially with a broad range of classical music, and then, narrowed it to just Beethoven’s work. Meanwhile, Walter and his group tried to interpret the rough drafts and the handful of notes that detailed Beethoven’s plans for the 10th Symphony.
The team then began the slow and careful task of feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished composition. To stay true to Beethoven’s original composition, Ahmed’s team sent Walter hundreds of AI-generated musical note variations every evening. Walter would listen to them and then select the one that he thought was closest to what the artist would have written. The AI team would add the music and rerun the software to generate the next suggestions. And piece by piece, the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony!
The composition was firstly released on October 9, 2021. Not surprisingly, it caused some controversy (争议). Critics believe technology should not be used to replicate the human creative process. Ahmed and his team agree with their opinions and say their AI software is not out to replace humans—it is just a tool to help artists to express themselves in new ways.

Detecting drugs used to be a special job for dogs, but now a drug detection team is welcoming some new colleagues-squirrels. Six Eurasian red squirrels were trained and approved for work responsibilities by police in Chongqing in February.
Squirrels have a sharp sense of smell as they can smell food under a foot (about 30 centimeters) of snow. Being so small and quick, the “newcomers” are able to search for drugs in places where dogs may not be able to reach, such as in narrow spaces or on top of packages stacked (堆) high in warehouses. The squirrels have been trained to use their claws to scratch at boxes in order to catch their handlers’ attention if they detect drugs, according to local Chongqing police authorities.
“Our self-developed training system can be applied to the training of various animals,” Yin Jin, a police dog handler in Chongqing, told Global Times, adding that the training has really good results as the squirrels can quickly identify drugs. Although the system is designed for dogs, it can show some information on how squirrels are trained as well.
According to a research article published in the journal China Working Dog which details the program, conditioning the animals' reflexes (反射) is the key factor. First, the animals are familiarized with the target’s smell and do special gestures when they smell their target. For example, for explosive detection dogs, the handlers place pieces of cloth with the smell of the explosives next to the dogs’ food.
Next, the animals learn to search for the target under various conditions. From a large number of luggage bags to people walking in crowds, the handlers create different situations to test the animals. If the animals successfully identify the location of the target, the animals are then rewarded with snacks and other treats. The animals are soon able to search for targets spontaneously (自动地), showing that the conditioned reflex has been built in them. Their training ends with practice sessions in real-life scenarios.
8. What would the squirrels do once they identify drugs?
A. Use their claws to take the drugs.
B. Enjoy treats from the handlers.
C. Scratch at the surface of packages.
D. Search for drugs with the same smell.
9. What is one advantage of using squirrels for drug detection mentioned in the article?
A. Squirrels can detect drugs hidden under the earth.
B. Squirrels are better at identifying explosives than dogs.
C. Squirrels can access narrow spaces or high packages in warehouses.
D. Squirrels requires less training compared to police dogs for drug detection.
10. What is of vital importance for the animals’ successful detection?
A. Developing the immediate reactions of animals.
B. Familiarizing the animals with the target’s smell.
C Doing special gestures when they smell their target.
D. Involving practice sessions under different conditions.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Role of Animals in Drug Detection
B. A New Member in the Drug Detection Force
C. The Challenges of Training Squirrels for Drug Detection
D. Chongqing Police’s Training Program for Sniffer Animals
C 9. C 10. A 11. B

根据第二段中“Being so small and quick, the “newcomers” are able to search for drugs in places where dogs may not be able to reach, such as in narrow spaces or on top of packages stacked (堆) high in warehouses. (由于体积小、速度快,这些“新来者”能够在狗可能够不到的地方搜索毒品,比如狭窄的空间里,或者在仓库里堆叠得很高的包裹顶部。)”可知,在毒品检测方面,松鼠相比于狗来说,松鼠可以进入仓库狭窄的空间或到达高处的包裹。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The animals are soon able to search for targets spontaneously (自动地),showing that the conditioned reflex has been built in them. (动物很快就能自动地寻找目标,这表明条件反射已经在体内建立起来了)”可知,动物自动寻找目标时,就表明它们已经发展出条件反射,因此形成条件反射对于动物成功探测是最重要的。故选A项。
根据第一段内容“Detecting drugs used to be a special job for dogs, but now a drug detection team is welcoming some new colleagues-squirrels. Six Eurasian red squirrels were trained and approved for work responsibilities by police in Chongqing in February. ( 探测毒品曾经是狗的一项特殊工作,但现在一个毒品探测小组正在欢迎一些新同事——松鼠。今年2月,重庆警方对6只欧亚红松鼠进行了培训,并批准了它们的工作职责。)”以及下文内容可知,本文主要讲述了重庆警方训练松鼠进行毒品探测,迎来松鼠成为新同事,共同探测毒品,因此推断B项“毒品侦缉队的新成员”为最佳标题。故选B项。

Artificial Intelligence (AI) advice is as influential as human’s, but positive crowd views still overpower.
In a study, researchers found that machines that make recommendations—or AI experts—were as influential as human experts when the AI experts recommended which photo users should add to their online business profiles. However, both AI and human experts failed to budge them if their feedback was negative and went against popular views among other users, said S. Shyam Sundar, a professor of Media Effects.
Because people are increasingly using social media to look for feedback, studies suggest that expert opinions and the bandwagon(从众效应)effect may be important factors in influencing decisions, according to Jinping Wang, a doctoral candidate in mass communication and first author of the study. “Nowadays, we often turn to online platforms for opinions from other people—like our peers and experts—before making a decision,” said Wang. AI experts are often less expensive than human experts and they can also work 24 hours a day, which, Wang suggests, might make them appealing to online business.
The researchers also found that the AI’s group status—in this case, national origin was pointed out—did not seem to affect a person’s acceptance of its recommendation. Among human experts, however, an expert from a similar national origin who offered a negative opinion of a photograph tended to be more influential than a human expert from an unknown country who offered a similar negative rating of a photograph.
While findings that suggest group status may not affect whether a person values the view of AI experts sound like good news, Sundar suggests that the same cultural prejudice might still be at work in AI experts for they could be hidden in the programming and training data.
“It can be both good—and bad—because it all depends on what you feed the AI,” said Sundar. “While it is good to believe in AI’s ability to transcend(超越)cultural prejudice, we have to keep in mind that if you train the AI on pictures from one culture, they could give misleading recommendations on pictures meant for use in other cultural contexts.”
12. What do the underlined words “budge them” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Change users’ ideas. B. Satisfy users’ needs.
C. Raise users’ spirits. D. Fire users’ imagination.
13. Why do users often turn to AI experts?
A. Because AI experts are more knowledgeable.
B. Because AI experts are less influenced by feelings.
C. Because AI experts are always available and cost less.
D. Because AI experts are so new as to be more attractive.
14. Which expert’s negative assessments is a person more likely to believe?
A. An expert who has great achievements in arts.
B. An expert from countries with similar cultures.
C. An expert with better personality and attitude.
D. A foreign expert who is very popular worldwide.
15. What did Sundar mean by the last paragraph?
A. People should have a mind of their own.
B. People should be able to tell good from bad.
C. People should be trained how to use AI properly.
D. People should know AI’s hidden cultural prejudice.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据文章第二段“In a study, researchers found that machines that make recommendations-or AI experts-were as influential as human experts when the AI experts recommended which photo users should add to their online business profiles. (在一项研究中,研究人员发现,当人工智能专家建议哪些照片用户应该添加到他们的在线商业资料中时,提出建议的机器——或人工智能专家——的影响力与人类专家一样大。)以及However...if their feedback was negative and went against popular views among other users(但是...如果他们的反馈是负面的,并且与其他用户的流行观点相悖)”可知,当反馈是负面的情况下,人工智能和人类专家都不能做出让步,即改变不了用户的观点,因此budge them的意思为“改变用户的观点”。故选A项。
根据文章第三段“AI experts are often less expensive than human experts and they can also work 24 hours a day, which, Wang suggests, might make them appealing to online businesses.(王表示,人工智能专家通常比人类专家更便宜,而且他们可以一天24小时工作,这可能会让他们对在线企业有吸引力。)”
根据文章第四段“Among human experts, however, an expert from a similar national origin who offered a negative opinion of a photograph tended to be more influential than a human expert from an unknown country who offered a similar negative rating of a photograph.(然而,在人类专家中,来自相似国家的专家如果对照片给出负面评价,往往比来自未知国家的专家给出相似负面评价的照片更有影响力。)”
根据文章最后一段“While it is good to believe in AI's ability to transcend cultural biases, we have to keep in mind that if you train the AI on pictures from one culture, they could give misleading recommendations on pictures meant for use in other cultural contexts.(虽然相信人工智能能够超越文化偏见是件好事,但我们必须记住,如果你用一种文化的图片来训练人工智能,它们可能会对其他文化背景下使用的图片给出误导性的建议。)”

Regret is a very real reaction to a disappointing event in your life, a choice you made that can’t be changed, something you said that you can’t take back. ____16____ Regret can increase our stress, negatively affect physical health and disturb the balance of our immune systems.
____17____ One is what researchers refer to as the action path and the other is the inaction path. That is, we can regret the things we did or we can regret the things we did not do. Research suggests that action-related regret, although painful, encourages people to learn from their mistakes and move on. ____18____ This kind of regret is more likely to lead to depression and anxiety.
As with other negative emotions, it doesn’t work to avoid, deny or try to destroy regret. ____19____ Rather than stay put, people can manage these emotions in four steps: First, accept the fact that you are feeling them; determine why you are feeling them; allow yourself to learn from them: and, finally, release them and move forward.
You can help release these feelings of regret by practicing self-compassion (自我同情).This means reminding yourself that you are human, you are doing the best you can and you can learn from past decisions and grow. ____20____
Noticing, acknowledging and then forgiving your thoughts are a powerful step towards overcoming regret.
A. Dealing with regret is even more difficult.
B. Regret is not only unpleasant, but also unhealthy.
C. There are basically two ways to experience regret.
D. But regret related to the inaction path is harder to fix.
E. Seeing the situation in a different way may help reduce regret.
F. In the long run, these strategies only increase negative feelings.
G. Showing this compassion to yourself can help you accept and move past the regret.
B 17. C 18. D 19. E 20. G
根据前文“Regret is a very real reaction to a disappointing event in your life, a choice you made that can’t be changed, something you said that you can’t take back. ”(后悔是对人生中令人失望的事件的真实反应,是你做出的无法改变的选择,是你说过的无法收回的话。)说明了后悔的定义。后文“Regret can increase our stress, negatively affect physical health and disturb the balance of our immune systems.”(后悔会增加我们的压力,对身体健康产生负面影响,扰乱我们免疫系统的平衡。)
根据后文“One is what researchers refer to as the action path and the other is the inaction path.”(一种是研究者称之为行动路径,另一种是不行动路径。)
根据前文“Research suggests that action-related regret, although painful, encourages people to learn from their mistakes and move on.”(研究表明,与行动相关的后悔虽然令人痛苦,却能鼓励人们从错误中吸取教训,继续前进。)
根据前文“As with other negative emotions, it doesn’t work to avoid, deny or try to destroy regret. ”(和其他负面情绪一样,回避、否认或试图消除后悔是不起作用的。)所以空处应承接前文,讲述我们应该换另一种方式来看待问题。选项E.“换个角度看问题可能有助于减少遗憾。”,承接前文,切题,故选E。
【20题详解】
根据前文“You can help release these feelings of regret by practicing self-compassion (自我同情).”(你可以通过练习自我同情来帮助释放这些后悔的感觉。)

It was just another busy day until I met the boy on the bus. He was not a passenger like me. He was, what we call a street child, an 8-10-year-old kid with a worn T-shirt. These poorly dressed kids were seen almost everywhere in Dhaka city. But what was special about that boy was his face. There was “something” in him that caught my attention. That was an angelic(天使般的)baby face with little care.
He got straight into the bus as it stopped at a traffic light. The bus helper shouted at him in the first place. But instead of talking back, the boy kept silent and started handing out a piece of paper to all the passengers. What was written in the paper was, in short, that his father died a couple of years ago. His mother worked at houses. He badly needed money to help his family, so he wished someone warm-hearted to buy chocolates from him.
This was nothing new to people who took a bus every day and I was no different. I had my earphones on, listening to some relaxing music to kill time. When he came to me to get the paper back, I casually gave him some money. Thankfully it brought some smiles on his face. He was about to give me ten chocolates in return for the money I gave to him when I stopped him.
“I don’t like chocolates, brother. So there is no need of chocolates. You can have the money,” I said.
All of a sudden, the smile on his face disappeared.
“I’m not a beggar. Please take the chocolate, or take your money back.”
His straight answer greatly surprised me. I even felt he was slightly angry. I had given money to many kids before, without taking their chocolates. But this time something seemed different. I realized his angelic baby face was not the only thing special about him.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The boy put ten chocolates on my seat and got off the bus. Seeing his small figure disappear in the busy street, I felt at a loss. “I know the boy.” A voice flew through the frozen air and drew me back to life. Then a man told all of us that the boy was a top student in a primary school nearby, whose mother fell ill due to the heavy work. In order to raise some money for his mother, the boy had been selling chocolates for several weeks.
Having got the boy’s name, I decided to help him. I got off the bus at the next stop and took a taxi to his school. Upon arrival, I managed to find the headmaster and handed him $1000, asking him to secretly give the money to the boy who I met selling chocolates on the bus. The headmaster promised to make everything perfect and thanked me on behalf of the boy and his mother. Now, I knew I could go home without shame and regret.
