Pet and animal-related apps are creating cybersecurity risks t their wners, new research has shwn. While being able t keep track f yur cat and dg may be an attractive benefit t many pet wners as it can prvide peace f mind, allwing a third party t track yur mvements may be much less attractive.
Cmputer scientists at Newcastle University and Ryal Hllway, University f Lndn have expsed multiple security and privacy issues by evaluating 40 ppular Andrid apps fr pets. The results shw that several f these apps are putting their users at risk by expsing their lgin r lcatin details.
Passwrd vulnerability (漏洞) was ne f the areas expsed by the team. They identified three applicatins that had the user’s lgin details visible in plain text within nn-secure HTTP traffic. This means that anyne is able t bserve the internet traffic f smene using ne f these apps and will be able t find ut their lgin infrmatin. In additin t lgin infrmatin, tw f the apps als shwed user details, such as their lcatin that may enable smene t gain access t their devices and risk a cyber-attack.
Anther area f cncern identified in the study was the use f trackers. All but fur f the applicatins were fund t feature sme frm f tracking sftware. A tracker gathers infrmatin n the persn using the applicatin, n hw they use it, r n the smartphne being used.
Sctt Harper is a PhD student at Newcastle University’s Schl f Cmputing and the lead authr f the study. He said: “Pet tech such as smart cllars and GPS trackers fr yur cat r dg, is a rapidly grwing industry and it brings with it new security, privacy, and safety risks t the pet wners.
