T figure ut if there’s sme kind f principle that can help explain wh becmes a flash in the pan and wh has a lasting music career, Justin Berg, a scial scientist wh researches creativity at Stanfrd University’s business schl, studied the sngs frm pp music charts. He used a database f abut 3 millin sngs frm 1959-2010 released by recrd labels that had prduced at least ne hit in the United States ver that time. Of thse sngs, nearly 25,000 landed n the weekly Billbard Ht 100. That prvided Berg with a list f nearly 4,900 artists wh had ne r mre sngs that made the list, his yardstick (标准) fr defining a hit.
Hits are rare, the data shw. Of the 69,000 artists in the riginal database, 93 percent never had a hit, 3 percent had ne and 1 percent had tw hits. The success rate fr additinal hits drps frm there.
