Jessup came up with the idea fr Special Name in 2015, after accmpanying her father n a business trip t China. One f her dad’s business partners, a Mrs. Wang, asked her t help chse an English name fr her daughter. Jessup felt hnred and quickly realized the imprtance f chsing a prper name in Chinese culture. The wman wanted peple t be surprised by the things her daughter culd achieve, s Jessup suggested the name “Eliza” after the character Eliza Dlittle frm the play Pygmalin. Mrs. Wang seemed delighted with Jessup’s chice. “If Mrs. Wang needed this service, maybe ther parents wuld as well,” Jessup thught.
After returning t UK, Jessup brrwed £1500 frm her parents and paid a web designer t build a website. She then spent her free time filling up a database with arund 4,000 English names assciating them with five majr persnality characteristics, like hnesty and ptimism.
In the beginning, Jessup ffered the service fr free t prmte the website, but later, she started charging fees. Scientists say they have develped a system that uses machine learning t predict when and where lightning will strike. Researchers reprt the system is able t predict lightning strikes up t 30 minutes befre they happen within a 30-kilmeter area. Lightning is a strng burst f electricity in the atmsphere. Since it carries an extremely pwerful electrical charge, it can cause very deadly results. Eurpean researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 peple are killed by lightning wrldwide each year. Fr this reasn, climate scientists have lng sught t develp methds t predict lightning.
The system tested in the experiments uses a cmbinatin f data frm weather statins and machine learning methds. The researchers develped a predictin mdel that was trained t recgnize weather cnditins that were likely t cause lightning.
The mdel was created with data cllected ver a 12-year perid frm 12 Swiss weather statins in cities and muntain areas. The data, related t fur main surface cnditins: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity (湿度) and wind speed, was placed int a unique machine learning algrithm (算法), which cmpared it t recrds f lightning strikes. Researchers say the algrithm was then able t learn the cnditins under which lightning happens.
The researchers test-ran the system several times. They fund that the system made predictins that prved crrect almst 80 percent f the time. “It can nw be used anywhere,” the Swiss Federal Institute f Technlgy said in a statement.
The researchers plan t keep develping the technlgy in partnership with a Eurpean effrt that aims t create a lightning prtectin prgram. The effrt is called the Eurpean Laser Lightning Rd prject. Scientists wrking n the prject are experimenting with a laser technlgy that culd smeday cntrl lightning activity, transferring lightning charges frm cluds t the grund. They hpe that such technlgy can ne day be used as prtectin against lightning strikes. Pssible uses culd be at statins, airprts r places where large crwds gather.
Why was the system develped?
A. T keep track f lightning deaths.
B. T meet peple’s curisity abut lightning.
C. T prtect peple frm lightning strikes.
D. T take advantage f the energy f lightning.
29. What is special abut the system?
A. It cllects data samples frm arund the wrld.
B. It invlves the use f a machine learning algrithm.
C. It was test-run several times befre being put int use.
D. Its success wes greatly t a Eurpean effrt.
30. What will the researchers d in the next stage?
A. Prevent the frmatin f lightning.B. Get lightning striking under cntrl.
C. Inspire the study f a laser technlgy.D. Raise the accuracy f lightning predictin.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. A system f Cntrlling Lightning B. A Thery f Emplying Lightning
C. A Methd f Frecasting Lightning D. A Mdel f Creating Lightning
D
T many peple, hney bees symblise wealth, sustainability and envirnmentalism. But as a hney bee researcher, I have t tell yu that nly the first item n that list is defensible. Althugh they are imprtant fr agriculture, hney bees, which are usually imprted frm utside the lcal area, als disturb natural ecsystems by cmpeting with native bees.
Fr several years the media has tld us that bee ppulatins are under threat. In respnse t this media campaign t “save the bees”, raising hney bees has becme a ppular hbby. But as a species, hney bees are least in need f saving. Much media attentin is given t hney bees at the expense f native bees, and this has led many citizens-myself nce included-t mistakenly believe they are ding a gd thing fr the envirnment by raising hney bees. Unfrtunately, they are prbably ding mre harm than gd.
“Beckeeping is fr peple; it’s nt a cnservatin practice,” says Shelly Smith, an envirnmental science prfessr. “Peple mistakenly think keeping hney bees als helps the native bees, which are at risk f extinctin. That’s wrng.”
Smith and her research team recently surveyed ne thusand lcal peple in Canada and fund that they had a surprisingly pr understanding f bee types and their rles in prmting flwer grwth. Mst peple’s attentin is n saving hney bees when, frm a cnservatinist’s pint f view, native bees are the nes in mre need f supprt.
“T make matters wrse, beekeeping cmpanies and varius nn-science-based prjects have financially benefitted frm the decline f native bee ppulatins,” Smith explains. “These cmpanies pretend they are interested in saving bees but their actins are actually damaging the native bee ppulatins.”
The intrductin f hney bees increases cmpetitin with native bee ppulatins fr fd, putting even mre pressure n the wild species that are already in decline. Hney bees are extremely efficient fd gatherers and take ver almst all lcal flwer resurces, thus leading t damaging cmpetitin-that is, where ne species uses up a resurce, nt leaving enugh t g arund.
Which statement des the writer argue fr?
Hney bees endanger native bees.
Hney bees are a symbl f wealth.
Hney bees are imprtant fr agriculture.
Hney bees can defend natural ecsystems
What can be inferred frm Paragraph 2?
Beekeeping is still a ppular traditinal hbby.
The media is respnsible fr misleading the public.
Citizens attempts’ t prtect the envirnment are effective.
The media campaign has failed t prmte hney bee businesses.
34. What surprised Shelly Smith’s team?
A. Beekeeping cmpanies’ making great prfits.
B. The quick expansin f bee-friendly habitats.
C. The public’s ignrance f bee varieties and rles.
D. Insufficient attentin given t saving hney bees.
35. Hw des the writer develp the last paragraph?
A. By listing examples.B. By making cmparisns
C. By analysing survey data.D. By explaining cause and effect.
