The birth of a healthy calf is certainly something to celebrate on a farm but one calf gave farmers Megan and Barry Coster even more to smile about. That’s because the Holstein calf was born with markings that look like a smiley face.
The Costers’ Bellbrook Holsteins farm in Ripplebrook, West Gippsland in Australia breeds around 700 calves a year, but they have never seen anything like this before.
When Barry Coster was checking the herd (牛群) during his morning rounds on March10, 2023, he came across the calf — now named Happy — and was surprised to see a face smiling at him. He was so shocked that he took a photo and sent it to his wife. “We’ve seen some number sevens or love hearts on the head and a few strange markings, but we’ve never seen anything that looks like a smiley face before, ” Megan Coster said.
At first, the Costers were going to keep Happy on the farm where he would be a life-long pet but after the news about this unique calf got out, the couple was bombarded (轰炸) by media from around the world. That was when they decided Happy should go on to do great things. So they started looking for a buyer for the calf but the Costers were not looking to make a profit from the sale. The money was donated to the West Gippsland Hospital that is being redeveloped and upgraded.
Farm World, a field day event held at Lardner Park purchased Happy who will now live out his days at the park which consists of a 120-hectare working farm that has livestock so Happy will have plenty of company. And the farm is located just around the corner from his birthplace.
“Happy is adjusting well, eating well, and has a great temperament (性情),” Craig Debnam, Lardner Park’s officer said. “With about 40, 000 to 50, 000 visitors coming through the gates to see ‘Happy’ this weekend, we know Happy will put a smile on everybody’s face,” he said.

It’s the end of August, and it’s time to start thinking about going back to school. For some, it’s a very exciting time. For others, however, they can feel very stressful. There are lots of things to do if you want to have a great first day at school.
Stay busy throughout the summer holiday. Usually those who struggle (挣扎) on their first days are people who spend too much of their summer holiday indoors and relaxing. So you should try to stay active and busy over the course of the holiday. There are lots of things you can do, such as getting a summer job or taking up a sport.
Continue learning over the summer holiday. People who struggle the most at first are those who aren’t learning over the holiday. Learning itself doesn’t have to be boring! You can learn about anything you want. Simply keeping your brain in the habit of learning will give you an extra advantage when it’s time to go back to school.
Spend time with friends that will attend the same school. If you have any friends living in the same neighborhood, there are chances that you will go to the same school! Make a point of creating stronger bonds (关系) with those friends. Spend part of your summer holiday with them, and grow closer. While there’s always some worry about going into the first day of school, having friends around that care about you makes it much easier.

A new study published in Thursday’s edition of Cell reports that mosquitoes’ sense of smell is more complex than we once thought. And it may explain how they are so good at seeking us out in the darkness and lead to new strategies to fight against the potentially deadly diseases caused by their bites.
Until Meg Younger, co-author of the study, and her colleagues started studying mosquitoes, it’s long been known that mosquitoes rely on multiple clues to target humans, First, they will sense the CO2 in the breath from a distance that can be more than 30 feet. After the CO2, then they begin to sense human body smells. They follow the odors(气味) and, when they get very close, start to detect body heat. Once they land on the skin, they look for a place to bite with their legs.
In many parts of the world, their bites may lead to such diseases as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and malaria. The latter disease alone causes over half a million deaths each year around the globe.
“But most of what we know about mosquitoes’ sense of smell comes from the study of the brains of mice and fruit flies, where the pathways between the brain and smell detectors are fairly simple: Each neuron(神经元) in their smell detectors just responds to a single kind of smell and all the neurons for that smell are connected to the same part of their brains. Of course, there are countless different detectors responding to countless smells,” says Younger. “When we started looking inside mosquito brains, we found that each neuron can detect multiple smells.”
“It’s a great breakthrough,” says Josefina del Marmol, a scientist at the Harvard Medical School who wasn’t involved with the research. “It will change a lot about what we know of how mosquitoes interact with the world and give researchers additional ways to fight the bugs. But there’s more work to be done to test, neuron by neuron, which neuron actually responds to which human body smells.”

The birth of a healthy calf is certainly something to celebrate on a farm but one calf gave farmers Megan and Barry Coster even more to smile about. That’s because the Holstein calf was born with markings that look like a smiley face.
The Costers’ Bellbrook Holsteins farm in Ripplebrook, West Gippsland in Australia breeds around 700 calves a year, but they have never seen anything like this before.
When Barry Coster was checking the herd (牛群) during his morning rounds on March10, 2023, he came across the calf — now named Happy — and was surprised to see a face smiling at him. He was so shocked that he took a photo and sent it to his wife. “We’ve seen some number sevens or love hearts on the head and a few strange markings, but we’ve never seen anything that looks like a smiley face before, ” Megan Coster said.
At first, the Costers were going to keep Happy on the farm where he would be a life-long pet but after the news about this unique calf got out, the couple was bombarded (轰炸) by media from around the world. That was when they decided Happy should go on to do great things. So they started looking for a buyer for the calf but the Costers were not looking to make a profit from the sale. The money was donated to the West Gippsland Hospital that is being redeveloped and upgraded.
Farm World, a field day event held at Lardner Park purchased Happy who will now live out his days at the park which consists of a 120-hectare working farm that has livestock so Happy will have plenty of company. And the farm is located just around the corner from his birthplace.
“Happy is adjusting well, eating well, and has a great temperament (性情),” Craig Debnam, Lardner Park’s officer said. “With about 40, 000 to 50, 000 visitors coming through the gates to see ‘Happy’ this weekend, we know Happy will put a smile on everybody’s face,” he said.

A new study published in Thursday’s edition of Cell reports that mosquitoes’ sense of smell is more complex than we once thought. And it may explain how they are so good at seeking us out in the darkness and lead to new strategies to fight against the potentially deadly diseases caused by their bites.
Until Meg Younger, co-author of the study, and her colleagues started studying mosquitoes, it’s long been known that mosquitoes rely on multiple clues to target humans, First, they will sense the CO2 in the breath from a distance that can be more than 30 feet. After the CO2, then they begin to sense human body smells. They follow the odors(气味) and, when they get very close, start to detect body heat. Once they land on the skin, they look for a place to bite with their legs.
In many parts of the world, their bites may lead to such diseases as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and malaria. The latter disease alone causes over half a million deaths each year around the globe.
“But most of what we know about mosquitoes’ sense of smell comes from the study of the brains of mice and fruit flies, where the pathways between the brain and smell detectors are fairly simple: Each neuron(神经元) in their smell detectors just responds to a single kind of smell and all the neurons for that smell are connected to the same part of their brains. Of course, there are countless different detectors responding to countless smells,” says Younger. “When we started looking inside mosquito brains, we found that each neuron can detect multiple smells.”
