Sme f the tall cnifers (针叶树) that have grwn up in Califrnia’s Sierra Nevada are n lnger suitable fr the climate they live in, new research has shwn. Althugh there are cnifers in thse areas nw, Hill and ther researchers suggested that as the trees die ut, they’ll be replaced with ther types f plants better suited t the envirnmental cnditins.
The team estimated that abut 20% f all Sierra Nevada cnifer trees in Califrnia are n lnger suitable fr the climate arund them and are in danger f disappearing. They called these trees “zmbie frests”. That change is largely due t higher temperatures and less rainfall in these lwer-elevatin areas. In additin, human activities, such as lgging and an increase in wildfires, have an effect n the reductin f cnifers.
The Sierra Nevada cnifers aren’t standing still. The average elevatin (海拔) f the trees has increased ver the past 90 years, mving 112 feet upslpe (上坡). Accrding t Hill, that is because lwer-elevatin cnifers have died while cnifers at higher elevatins where the air is cler have been able t grw. But the cnifers’ uphill trek hasn’t been able t keep pace with the dramatic increase in temperatures. The researchers said the number f Sierra Nevada cnifers incmpatible (不能共处的) with their envirnments culd duble in the next 77 years.

Fr a taste f their findings, take a typical bk in China: The Cat That Eats Letters. Seemingly it’s abut a cat that has an appetite fr slppy (马虎的) letters --“written t large r t small, r if the letter is missing a strke (笔画)”, explains ne f the researchers, psychlgist Cecilia Cheung, a prfessr at University f Califrnia Riverside.“S the nly way children can stp their letters frm being eaten is t write really carefully and practice every day.”
But the underlying pint is clear: “This is really instilling (逐步培养的) the idea f effrt - that children have t learn t cnsistently practice in rder t achieve a certain level,” says Cheung. And that idea, she says, is a cre cncept f Chinese culture.
