A new study suggests classic paintings by well-knwn Impressinists Jseph Turner and Claude Mnet may have been influenced by air pllutin during the Industrial Revlutin.
The study, published in Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences by authrs frm Harvard and Srbnne universities, analyzed 60 il paintings by Turner frm 1796 t 1850 and 38 paintings by Mnet frm 1864 t 1901.
Scientists dn’t knw exactly hw plluted the cities were during that time fr lack f data. Hwever, researchers say examining the wrks f Turner and Mnet can give a picture f lng-term envirnmental change with the air pllutin.
In particular, researchers said changes in lcal sulfur dixide emissins frm burning cal may explain changes in the clur cntrast and intensity f Tuner, Mnet, and thers’ wrks, even after taking int accunt the artistic trends and subject matter f the time.
Scientists successfully measured painters’ representatin f nature, fcusing n differences in lcal weather patterns which influenced clur in wrks painted in different parts f Eurpe. Paintings’ dne in Britain generally feature a paler blue sky than ther wrks in ther parts f the cntinent. Generally, artists can histrically accurately represent their envirnment, s Turner and Mnet were chsen because they are famus fr their landscape and cityscape paintings and als because they were active during the Industrial Revlutin, when air pllutin grew at a rate never seen befre.

Archaelgists(考古学家)have discvered at least 58 shipwrecks(沉船)filled with ancient bjects near the islands f Furni in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey. The discvery is believed t be the largest cllectin f shipwrecks ever fund in the Mediterranean. They gathered there ver a lng time perid, frm time f ancient Greece t the 20th century. Peter Campbell is leading the underwater research f the wrecks fr the RPM Nautical Fundatin, a grup that studies ancient bjects. He said, "The excitement is difficult t describe. I mean, it was just unbelievable. We knew that we had cme acrss smething that was ging t change the histry bks. "
The internatinal team began the underwater study in 2015. They fund 22 shipwrecks that year. That number has climbed t 58 with the latest discvery. The team believes there are even mre secrets lying n the seabed belw.
Campbell called it "ne f the tp archaelgical discveries f the century". He tld Reuters, "We nw have a new stry t tell f a trading rad that cnnected the ancient Mediterranean. "
The wrecks and their cntents shw ships carrying gds frm nearby areas like the Black Sea, Greece, Turkey, Armenia and Italy. Other gds cme frm places farther away such as Spain, Sicily, Cyprus, Egypt, the Middle East and Nrth Africa.
The team has raised mre than 300 ancient bjects frm the shipwrecks, including many tall jars(广口瓶)with tw ears used by ancient Greek and Rman peple t carry liquid.

Scientists and engineers have lng suspected a key t the building’s durability (使用年限) is the use f a specific Rman cncrete. But exactly hw this slid cncrete has cntributed t the architecture’s strength has been a mystery t researchers acrss the glbe.
A team f researchers recently discvered a ptential answer t why these ancient Rman buildings have been able t weather the test f time while many mdern cncrete structures seem t fall apart after a few decades. The answer is self-healing cncrete.
The material has three cmpnents: limestne (石灰石), vlcanic material and water. What the researchers fund was that the self-healing feature might be simply caused by chemistry accidentally. The limestne in the cncrete is likely the secret.
When the ancient Rmans made mrtar (灰浆), they heated up the lime t turn it int a substance called “quicklime”. And, because they intrduced water t the quicklime during mixing, the heat it prduced set up a chemical fundatin that culd strengthen the cncrete later. When tiny cracks start t frm later, the quicklime stps them frm becming bigger. When it rains, the lime reacts with the water t recmbine as varius frms f calcium carbnate (碳酸钙), quickly filling the crack r reacting with the vlcanic ash t “heal” the material.
Fr materials scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding f ancient Rman cncrete is a welcme discvery. “This is ne way that the material can be mre envirnmentally friendly,” says Ramirez. “It’s srt f like a message in a bttle.
