Anna, my 10-year-old daughter, is on a wild ride with the United States Postal Service (USPS) and our mail carrier, Eason. She has a serious letter-writing habit and keeps in contact with her favorite people. If you’ve been the receiver of her hand-decorated letters and envelopes, then I know they really make your day.
A letter from Anna is likely to include some art, a joke and enough questions to guarantee a response. But when she wrote a letter to Eason, she put something new in it. “You may know me as the person living here that writes lots of letters. You’re very important to me, helping me stay in touch with friends. I cheer people up with my letters, and you do that too!” Anna wrote.
The next day, a package arrived with two letters. One was from Eason and the other from his superior, Sara, saying she had shared Anna’s letter in the internal newsletter (内部通讯) of the USPS and believed many postal folks wanted to thank Anna. Anna was so pleased with the letter that it perturbed me much, for the possible result of no reply from other mail carriers would come as a blow to her.
Surprisingly, today, we saw Eason come with two boxes of letters from around the country. These letters were so human, filled with stories about family, pets and a sense of kindness. But there was something more in them. People felt seen — some for the first time in a long time. “I work alone in a small rural post office...” “Not many people think about how hard we work...” Anna wrote back seriously.
I’m sharing this not because I’m a proud dad, but because it’s relatively easy, if we take the time to give others links they need to be good. We all want to be seen, known and loved. Send a letter. Give a call. Take a step of bravery, like Anna.
24.Why did Anna write Eason a letter?
A.To make friends with him. B.To cheer him up.
C.To express her appreciation. D.To share her daily life.
25.What does the underlined word “perturbed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Touched. B.Concerned. C.Moved. D.Astonished.
26.Which of the following words can best describe Anna?
A.Caring and grateful. B.Energetic and ambitious.
C.Courageous and generous. D.Capable and humorous.
27.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.People should face challenges with bravery. B.People should care more about mail carriers.
C.People should connect with others actively. D.People should show kindness to their parents.

Recently I rolled into a local restaurant to try an Impossible Burger, an all-plant patty(人造肉饼) invented by Impossible Foods. It's well known for having an strangely chewy(有咀嚼感), even bloody, meat-like quality, a surprising verisimilitude(逼真) that has made it ''perhaps the country's most famous burger, '' as New York magazine wrote. One bite into its wonderful, smoky taste and, damn, I was convinced.
This is good news, because the time has come to consume fake meat. In the fight against climate change, meat replacement is something we can try. A University of Oxford study recently found that, to keep global warming below 2 degrees this century, we need to be eating 75 percent less beef and 90 percent less pork.
However, diets are culturally enshrined, so changing them will be hard. It isn't easy to replace 75 to 90 percent of beef and pork with fake meat. The first taste of an Impossible Burger—a moment when low expectations work a powerful magic in the product's favor—is one thing. But how do you keep meat-eaters asking for more after their sixth, and their 26th?
To get to true mass adoption, fake meat will need to compete favorably with the real thing on multiple fronts. Impossible Foods' goal is to drive the price of its product below that of Safeway's 80/20 hamburger meat, at which point people will simply vote with their wallets. The new industry also wants to improve on animal flesh in various ways. Fake meat has an advantage over traditional meat because ''you won't need to refrigerate it'' cofounder Niko Koffeman says. Plus, custom(定制的) production could improve choice. ''You could have very soft and tender meat for elderly people,'' Koffeman adds. ''You could have a tailored meat for whatever you need.''
You can tell the world is shifting this way, because the ranchers(牧场主) are nervous. Last year, the US Cattlemen's Association asked the government to define ''meat'' as a product ''coming directly from animals.'' That anxiety—and the power of the science driving it—goes to show that this grand shift isn't impossible.
28.According to passage, the author was convinced by the Impossible Burger because__.
A.it has a special taste that is different from normal ones.
B.it contains all non-meat materials that taste like meat.
C.more vegetables are used as main materials for the burger.
D.one bite of this burger can provide people with the energy needed for a whole day.
29.What does the author mean by saying "Diets are culturally enshrined"?
A.That people think their diet is the best in the world.
B.That people are unwilling to go against their culture by changing their diets.
C.That people's preference for food is linked to the food choice available to them.
D.That people's eating habits are consistently observed and closely connected with their culture.
30.Which of the following statements is true about the advantages that fake meat will have to beat over traditional meat?
A.Fake meat will not be necessarily stored in a refrigerator.
B.The price of fake meat will be just one-fourth of traditional meat's.
C.Fake meat will win over older people thanks to its tender and soft taste.
D.Fake meat will own a taste that is not found in traditional meat.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Meat must come from animals.
B.The world will probably embrace the idea of fake meat.
C.The ranchers are suffering economic loss due to fake meat.
D.The definition of meat has been changed because of fake meat.
D
If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effects are greater, the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language.” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible” he said, “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
32.The main subject of this passage is ________.
A.the strategy for learning a second language
B.men’s ability to learn a second language
C.how language leaning helps brainpower
D.the relationship between language learning and math study
33.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to ________.
A.suggest that language learning involves physical labor.
B.prove that one needs more practice when he(she) is learning a language
C.show that language learning is a process of accumulation
D.make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well
34.We may learn from the scientific findings that ________.
A.the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is.
B.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one knowing no second language.
C.the experience of learning a second language has an unknown effect on people’s brain
D.the ability to learn a second language is changing all the time
35.In the last two paragraphs, the author tries to tell us that ________.
A.learning a second language is the same as studying maths
B.early learning of a second language helps in studying other subjects
C.Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
D.you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language

My Favorite Money Saving Tips
One of the things that many folks want to do is better money habits. I’m pretty good about my saving, and fairly responsible in my spending. So as many of you all probably want to “save more money” or “spend less money”, I wanted to share my saving tips with you.
Manage your debt. 36 If you have credit card debt, pay this down before you start doing any other savings. If you have several cards with debt, try the laddering technique. Start by paying down your debt on the highest interest card you have. Once that balance is at zero, go to the next highest percent card and so on.
37 Life can throw at you unexpected expenses that can easily add up quickly. One of your main savings goals should be to build an emergency fund. You should have ready-to-go-in liquid cash, 6-9 months of living expenses for a rainy day. 38 But don’t invest the money. Make sure you can access this money in an absolute emergency.
Spend your cash. Seems crazy but it’s true! This is especially helpful to those who tend to be impulsive (冲动的) shoppers. Figure out your monthly budget, and divide it by 4. Add this amount to your wallet each week and only spend the cash. 39 Studies have shown that you are less likely to break large bills or to spend less cash when you have to physically pull the cash out.
Keep your extra cash in a high yield savings account. Though it’s rare to find a bank that provides a large interest rate on savings, right now you can get 0.5% and 0.1 to 0.25% on checking. 40
A.Get an emergency fund.
B.Avoid unnecessary expenses.
C.Don’t touch the credit cards.
D.You must make this a priority.
E.But remember to check it from time to time.
F.It’s a great way to add a little extra income to your money.
G.This amount should be kept in your high-yield savings account.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“You signed us up for what?” Lu’s eyes widened as Jamie grinned at her. “A charity bike ride. It’d be fun!” She stared at him open-mouthed. “Fun? But I haven’t ridden a bike for years, Jamie. And I hate exercise! How long is this ride?” Lu could feel her muscle shrinking at the mere thought of it.
“Only 20 kilometers.”
Lucinda swiped the brightly coloured leaflet advertising the bike ride from her husband’s hand. “Twenty kilometres? That’s a half marathon, Jamie!”
She tossed the leaflet back at him. “Well you can count me out. I’m not fit enough to run five minutes round the block, let alone hours on a bike.”
“But you will be in a couple of months. I thought we could train for it together.” Jamie patted his beer belly. “I’m not exactly in great shape at the moment. And you’ re always saying we don’t get to spend enough time together!” He gave her his best winning grin.
A smile fell across Lucinda’s lips. It was true, she was always saying that lately. Though spending her weekends cycling was not exactly what she’d had in mind.
A wave of sadness spun through her heart. The past few months had been... difficult. She had lost her job and was struggling to find a new one. Being at home, scrolling through job adverts and waiting for interview replies, had left her feeling stuck. Jamie had been working extra hours to support financially, but that only added to her guilt. Despite trying to stay positive, life had somehow skidded to a stop.
“I’m not sure,” Lu sighed.
“It’s not a race, but a joy ride, Lu.” Jamie reassured her, nudging her playfully. “Plus, I’ve already rented us a tandem bike(双人自行车)!”
“A tandem?” Lu’s eyes flashed with horror. “Are you mad?” She stared at him. “You’re not even joking, are you?” Doubts crept into her mind as she imagined the challenges of coordinating their movements on a shared bike.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Actually, the first training session did not go well.

W: Your ticket says your train leaves from Penn Station, not Grand Central Station. If you take a taxi there, you might make it on time!
M: Oh, no. Thanks, I’ll try. I only have 30 minutes left!
4.A
W: I’m not sure what to study at university. I really like foreign languages, like French, but I’m also drawn to other courses.
M: I always thought maths was your favorite subject.
W: It used to be, but I prefer history now… Actually, perhaps that is what I should choose.
5.B
M: Excuse me. Have you got an electronic dictionary?
W: I’m afraid not. Why don’t you go and ask Linda? I saw one on her desk just now.
6.C 7.A
M: How's the new job, Alison?
W: Well, I'm terribly busy. Every day I meet many people. But I do lots of typing and filing, too.
M: Don't you like being a receptionist?
W: Oh, I enjoy meeting people, and I like answering the phone. But I hate typing, and I can't stand filing.
M: You can go to college, you know. Why don't you study for a year?
W: What do you mean?
M: I mean, you can do a course in business studies. After a year, you get a certificate. Then you can apply for lots of different jobs.
W: That's a good idea.
8.A 9.C 10.A
M: So where are you going on holiday?
W: John’s taking me to a little house by a lake up north.
M: Sounds very peaceful.
W: It is. It’s exactly what we need after this year. It’s been so busy, so we’ve barely seen each other.
M: What are you guys going to do there?
W: Sleep hopefully! I’m dreaming of lying in bed every day.
M: John seems to be more of the active type. I can’t imagine him lying in bed.
W: No, he gets up at 6:00 a.m. and goes for a run. There are nice forest paths around the lake with a view of the mountains. We also have the use of a boat, so we can go sailing if the weather is good.
M: Sounds ideal.
W: I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I think he might plan on asking me to marry him!
M: It’s about time. How long have you been together? Four years?

W: I'm sorry to trouble you, doctor. It's just that I have been feeling so sick and sleepy these days.
M: Are you getting good sleep these days?
W: Yeah, six to seven hours every night, but it's not deep sleep. And when I wake up, I have a pain in my legs. I also get headaches very easily.
M: It sounds like you have a lot of stress. And your sleep time should be eight or nine hours if you are working very hard.
W: Yes, I think so. I guess I'm worried too much about my students. In fact, every other day I have to get up as early as 5:00 am. I often dream some scenes where I am busy dealing with schoolwork.
M: You should listen to some light music before going to bed and get more physical exercise to reduce your pressure. And you can chat with your close friends about your work and listen to their advice. Just take it easy.
W: Oh, that's good advice.
M: And I recommend taking some sleeping pills. You'd better come back in a fortnight and let's see how that works.
W: Thanks very much.
M: You're welcome.

W: For what couldn’t they stand the house?
M: Well, you know the airport was so close to their house that they couldn’t sleep well because of the noise from the planes. Mr. Brown took sleeping pills every night until the doctor told him that he was at high risk for heart disease.
W: Do you know where they’re living now?
M: They bought a new house in the countryside.
W: I’m sure Mrs. Brown is very happy. She has been wanting to live in the country for years.

Good morning, students. I’m Mr. Reynolds, your new English teacher. I just want to explain a few things before we get started. First, I don’t allow students to show up late to class. If you are late for over five minutes, you will be considered absent and receive zero points. If you have four absences, you will fail the class. Second, there will be absolutely no talking in my class. If you have a question, raise your hand until I call on you. Is that understood? Now, let’s talk about your schedule. In the first term, we’ll be learning about writing and grammar. You will have one short test, one long exam, and two essays. In the second term, we’ll be studying reading comprehension. Over this three-month period, you will have one test per month, as well as a presentation. For the last three months, we’ll study literature. You must complete one individual presentation on a famous poet, read two novels, and study for your final exam. We have a long year ahead of us, boys and girls. Keep your heads down and study hard. Let’s have a good September!

66.Dear Mr. Smith,
I am Li Hua, chairman of the Student Union of Xin Hua High School. Thank you for inviting us to visit your school next week, for which we do feel honored. Now I am writing for more detailed information.
Since it will be our first trip to Britain, we would like to know details about the arrangement of the visit. Could you please e-mail our schedule to me at your convenience? Besides, in terms of Chinese traditional culture, considering that there is growing interest in Tang Poems, we plan to introduce this great cultural treasure. For better interaction, fellow students of your school can prepare some relative questions beforehand.
I'd appreciate it if you could give us an early reply. Wish our interaction activity a great success!
Yours,
Li Hua
67.Actually, the first training session did not go well. The moment they picked up the bicycle, the sky filled with drizzle and Lucinda’s mood turned dark. “This is stupid, Jamie,” she scowled, “What on earth are we doing here?” Jamie, however, beamed brightly and held the bicycle steady for her to climb on. Along the track, they were greeted with friendly greetings and cheers from Sunday morning walkers. And there was Jamie, always by her side, softly encouraging and cheering her. As the hours passed, they were both sweating buckets. Gone with the sweat were Lucinda’s groans and concerns. Weeks slipping by, Lucinda found herself actually looking forward to their weekend rides. Her muscles grew stronger and their progress became evident, instilling a newfound sense of hope and optimism.
It seemed cycling had truly got their lives moving forward again. Jamie was in quite good shape, his belly tight now. Last week Lucinda received happy news out of the blue -a job offer from one of her many applications and interviews! Finally, the big day came. Lucinda was surprised by the bustling scene: friends, families, spectators and a crazy collection of cyclists - some in fancy dress, others in serious cycle gear. As they waited, Jamie glanced over his shoulder. “I’m really proud of you, you know.” Lucinda grinned. “For the job offer, or this?” Jamie smiled. “Both. You never gave up, even when things seemed impossible.” “And you never gave up on me. Now look at us!” she laughed. With the whistle buzzing and horns blaring, they joined the stream of enthusiastic cyclists and flew along amidst the thunderous cheers of the crowd. In that moment, Lucinda felt her heart spinning with happiness.
