Thmas Jeffersn did nt like what Buffn had said abut the natural wnders f the New Wrld. It seemed t Jeffersn that Buffn had spken f natural wnders in America as if they were unimprtant.
This trubled Thmas Jeffersn. He was a naturalist, as well as a farmer, inventr, histrian, writer and plitician. He had seen the natural wnders f Eurpe. T him, they were n mre imprtant than thse f the New Wrld.
In 1788, Thmas Jeffersn wrte abut his hme state, Virginia. While writing, he thught f its natural beauty and then f the wrds f Buffn. At that mment, Jeffersn created a new wrd-belittle. He said. “Buffn believes that nature belittles her prductins n this side f the Atlantic.”
Nah Webster, the American wrd expert, liked this wrd. He put it in his English language dictinary in 1806, “Belittle-t make smebdy r smething small, unimprtant.”
Americans had already accepted Jeffersn’s wrd and started t use it. In 1797, the Independent Chrnicle newspaper used the wrd t describe a plitician the paper supprted. “He is an hnrable man,” the paper wrte, “s let the ppsitin try t belittle him as much as they please.”
In 1872, a famus American wrd expert decided that the time had cme t kill this wrd. He said, “‘Belittle’ has n chance f becming English. And as mre critical writers f America, like thse f Britain, feel n need f it, the sner it is frgtten, the better.” This expert failed t kill the wrd. Tday, “belittle” is used where the English language is spken.

I had a part-time jb as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One day, when I was serving fd t a middle-aged cuple, the wife asked me hw the fd culd be served s quickly. I tld her that I had made sure they gt their fd quickly because I always respect the elderly. As sn as I said that, she lked very unhappy. My manager gave me a lng lecture abut hw Americans dislike the wrd “ld”. I then walked back and aplgized t the lady.
In my hmetwn in China, peple are prud f being ld. Nt s many peple live t be seventy r eighty, and peple wh reach such an age have the mst knwledge and experience. Yung peple always respect lder peple because they knw they can learn frm their rich experience.
Hwever, in the United States, “ld” means that a persn is ging t retire(退休). Here many peple try t keep themselves frm grwing ld by ding exercises. When I tld the cuple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they gt angry because this caused them t feel they had failed t stay yung.
After that, I changed the way I had been with lder peple. It is nt that I dn’t respect them any mre; I still respect them, but nw I dn’t shw my feelings thrugh wrds.

Shining just 12 light-years frm Earth, the star Tau Ceti s resembles the sun that it has appeared in numerus science- fictin stries and was the first star astrnmers ever searched fr signs f intelligent life, half a century ag. In 2012 Tau Ceti grew still mre interesting when astrnmers reprted five pssible planets smewhat larger than Earth circling clser t the star than Mars rbits (围绕……运动) the sun—ne f which is in the star’s habitable zne. Newly released images taken by the Herschel Space Observatry prvide even mre insight abut Tau Ceti’s slar system: greater detail abut its dust belt.
Dust arises when asterids and cmets (小行星和彗星) crash int ne anther s its lcatin reveals where these dust- creating bjects—which are t small t be seen directly—rbit a star. In Tau Ceti’s case, “it’s quite a wide dust belt,” says Samantha Lawler f the University f Victria in British Clumbia. As her team reprted in Nvember, the belt’s inner edge is rughly tw t three astrnmical units (AUs) frm the star, which is the psitin f ur wn sun’s asterid belt. (An AU is the distance frm Earth t the sun.) Tau Ceti’s dust belt extends ut t 55 AU, which wuld be just beynd ur system’s main Edgewrth-Kuiper belt, the zne f small bdies whse largest member is prbably Plut. Presumably full f asterids and cmets, Tau Ceti’s dust belt mst likely lacks a planet as large as Jupiter, Lawler says. The gravity f such a massive planet wuld have driven away mst small space rcks.
Within a year a new series f radi telescpes in Chile called ALMA shuld prvide a sharper view f the disk, especially f its inner edge. The ALMA images will help astrnmers cnfirm whether the star’s five prpsed planets are indeed real. If the disk verlaps the planets’ hypthesized (假设的) rbits, then they prbably d nt exist; they wuld have kept away mst asterids near the star, remving the surce f dust.
If thse planets d exist, hwever, Lawler’s team suggests that Tau Ceti’s planetary system may resemble what ur slar system wuld have lked like had the fur giant planets—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune- never frmed: small planets rbiting clse t the star, and nthing but asterids, cmets and dust beynd.
9. Accrding t astrnmers, the five pssible planets f Tau Ceti________.
A. resembled Earth in size
B. functined like a slar system
C. were lcated in Tau Ceti’s habitable zne
D. were nearer t Tau Ceti than Mars t the sun
10. Which f the fllwing is true f Tau Ceti’s dust belt?
A. It is narrwer than the asterid belt in ur system.
B. The bdies inside it are all smaller than Jupiter.
C. The gravity f Tau Ceti makes it get denser.
D It is ver 55 astrnmical units in width.
11. Accrding t the passage, the five planets are mst likely t exist if________.
A. they dn’t mve int the dust belt while rbiting Tau Ceti
B. they have kept away mst asterids and cmets
C. they dn’t crash int any asterid r cmet
D. they can be seen clearly by ALMA
12. It can be inferred frm the passage that Tau Ceti’s dust belt________.
A. is useful because it stps asterids r cmets crashing int the star
B. makes Tau Ceti different frm the sun because it extends farther
C. is interesting because it keeps ther planets away frm Tau Ceti
D. plays a rle in helping decide whether the five planets are real
D
Wd has many great characteristics that make it the perfect building material. It is cheap, durable, easily available, and mst imprtantly, envirnmentally sustainable. The ne thing it is nt, is transparent! Nw thanks t a team f scientists at Stckhlm’s KTH Ryal Institute f Technlgy the material may even be able t add that feature t its already impressive list. Lead researcher Dr.Lars Berglund said he was inspired t create the transparent wd after learning hw Japanese researchers had develped a see-thrugh paper fr use in flexible display screens fr electrnic devices. The team began by pulling ut the wd’s lignin (木质素). The lignin-free wd was then dipped int a plymer (聚合物) and baked at a temperature f 158°F fr fur hurs. The result was a hybrid prduct that was nt nly strnger and lighter than the riginal wd but als, almst transparent. The researchers were able t adjust the level f transparency by varying the amunt f the plymer injected and als by changing the thickness f the wd.
While scientists have previusly created a see-thrugh wd fr small-scale applicatins like cmputer chips, the transparent wd is the first ne being cnsidered fr large scale applicatins. The researchers, wh revealed their findings in Bimacrmlecules n April 11, picture using the transparent wd in buildings t allw fr mre natural light, r t create windws that let in the desired amunt f light withut sacrificing privacy.
Wd that allws light t pass thrugh culd lead t a brighter future fr hmes and buildings. Berglund als thinks the wd culd play a significant rle in the design f slar panels. The semitransparent material wuld be able t keep light lnger and give it mre time t interact with the cnductr, thus resulting in better slar efficiency. Additinally, substituting the currently used glass with this new prduct wuld help slar energy manufacturers imprve their carbn ftprint and lwer the cst. They are nw experimenting with ways t scale up the manufacturing prcess s that the transparent material is cst-effective t make and easy t use.
13. What des the underlined part “that feature” in Paragraph 1 refer t?
A. Cheap.B. Durable.C. Sustainable.D. Transparent.
14. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t the text?
A Berglund gt the idea f transparent wd while making paper.
B. Varying the amunt f the plymer changes the wd’s hardness.
C. The transparent wd wuld be used nly fr hmes and buildings.
D. The cst f making the transparent wd still needs t be cut dwn.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. The bright future f the transparent wd.
B. The wd’s rle in the design f slar panels.
C. The disadvantages f the currently used glass.
D. Slar energy manufacturers’ carbn ftprint.
