Jhn vn Neumann was the ldest f 3 children f a banker, and his speed f learning new ideas and lving prblems std ut early. At 17, his father tried t persuade him nt t becme a mathematician because he might lead a pr life being a mathematician, s vn Neumann agreed t study chemistry as well. In 1926, at 23, he received a degree in chemical engineering and a Ph. D. in mathematics. Frm then n, mathematics prvided well enugh fr him, and he never had t turn t chemistry.
In 1930, vn Neumann visited Princetn University fr a year and then became a prfessr there. His first bk was published in 1932. In 1933, the Institute fr Advanced Study was frmed, and he became ne f the 6 full-time peple in the Schl f Mathematics (Einstein was ne f the thers).
Wrld War Ⅱ hugely changed vn Neumann’s areas f interest. Until 1940 he had been a great pure mathematician. During and after the war, he became ne f the best mathematicians wh put mathematical theries int practice. During the last part f the war, he became interested in cmputing machines and made several fundamental cntributins. After the war, vn Neumann cntinued his wrk with cmputers, and was generally very active in gvernment service. He received many awards, was president f the American Mathematical Sciety and was a member f the Atmic Energy Cmmissin. He died f cancer in 1957.
Vn Neumann made several great cntributins and any ne f them wuld have been enugh t earn him a firm place in histry. He will be remembered as ne f the greatest minds f the 20th century.
Vn Neumann really was a legend in his wn time, and there are a number f stries abut him. His driving abilities is a part f his legend. He reprted ne accident this way: “I was driving dwn the rad. The trees n the right were passing me in an rderly fashin at 60 miles per hur. Suddenly ne f them stepped in my path.”
24. Accrding t the text, vn Neumann’s father believed that _________.

Yesterday, after a day f Zm (视频会议软件) meetings in my living rm, I stepped ut fr a walk leaving my teen sn bred n the cuch. Bleecker Street, usually packed with peple, was sprinkled with nly the ccasinal pedestrians. Bars and restaurants lining the street were dark. Stres with bright nen lights, drs pen, beckned fr the rare passers-by t enter. After just a week f the Cvid-19 pandemic, an afternn walk in Greenwich Village neighbrhd felt surreal.
But then I nticed a rw f daffdils(水仙)reaching fr the sun in the small triangle-shaped park by Minetta Lane. On the windws f a lcked restaurant, in bright yellw paint, were the wrds “We lve yu, West Village. Take care f each ther. ” My phne buzzed—a clleague sent a picture f her newbrn baby just hme frm the hspital. I arrived hme t find my sn animated n the cuch playing a vide game virtually with his friends. Life, lve, play, and human cnnectin persist, even thugh ur wrld has been tuned upside dwn.
In my welcme nte t the new students in the Fall, I wrte that this year is abut ur cllege’s cre values f inclusin, innvatin, and impact and emphasized the pwer f intercnnectin. Tday, these cre values persist, with intercnnectin taking n even greater significance. Our cllabrative spirit has always given us an advantage—academically, creatively, culturally, and nw, remtely.
A wise persn nce tld me that getting thrugh a crisis is like being given a new hand f cards in the middle f a game. We are halfway thrugh the semester, with new hands t play, but the game hasn’t changed. We will find new ways t cntinue t wrk, teach, create and learn. Let’s als cntinue the infrmal interactins that make us a cmmunity—the study grups, cffee dates, drp-ins just t say hell. In ding s, we will remain cnnected.
We will cme tgether, frm spaces arund the wrld, t meet this new reality. This is wh we are. Nthing—nt space, nr time—can keep us frm mving frward, tgether.
28. What can be inferred frm paragraph 1?
A. The Cvid-19 pandemic is unstppable.
B. The effects f the pandemic culd be easily felt.
C. Nthing is the same except that the business ges slw as usual.
D. Peple have every reasn t be wrried abut the future.
29. What des the writer include in paragraph 2?
A. Daily rutines that seemed insignificant.
B. Reminders that the wrld has been changed.
C. Events that peple can d during the pandemic.
D. Things r peple that carry symblic meanings.
30. What des the underlined wrd “cllabrative” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Cperative.B. Pineering.C. Independent.D. Adventurus.
31. What is the main purpse f the text?
A. T express wisdm gained frm previus experience.
B. T give peple sme tips n hw t handle a crisis.
C. T deliver an uplifting message ver the pandemic.
D. T encurage peple t enjy the great utdrs.
D
Scientists think that grwing garden grass culd be the secret t slving ur energy needs, and we may sn be able t replace ur gasline with “grassline”.
The team, including experts frm Cardiff University in Wales, has shwn that hydrgen can be taken frm grass in useful amunts with the help f sunlight and a cheap catalyst (催化剂) — smething that speeds up a chemical reactin withut being used up.
It is the first time that this has been shwn and it culd lead t a sustainable (可持续的) way f making hydrgen, reprted Asian News Internatinal. This culd be an imprtant kind f renewable energy because it is high in energy and it des nt give ut harmful gases when it is burned.
Study c-authr Michael Bwker said, “This is really a green surce f energy. Hydrgen is seen as an imprtant future energy carrier as the wrld mves frm fssil fuels t renewable energy, and ur research has shwn that even garden grass culd be a gd way f getting it.”
Cellulse (纤维素), which is a key part f plants and the biplymer (生物聚合物) fund in the largest numbers n the earth, culd be a great surce f hydrgen.
In its study, the team lked at the pssibility f getting hydrgen frm cellulse using sunlight and a simple catalyst.
This is called phtcatalysis (光催化作用) and in it, the sunlight starts the catalyst, which then makes cellulse and water int hydrgen. The researchers studied the effectiveness f three metal-based catalysts, f which nickel (镍) especially interested the researchers, as it is a much mre cmmn metal than gld and palladium (钯) and it saves mre mney.
Accrding t Bwker, prducing hydrgen frm cellulse using phtcatalysis has nt been studied in detail. The team’s research shws that large amunts f hydrgen can be prduced using this methd with the help f a bit f sunlight and a cheap catalyst.
The study shws that it is effective t use real grass taken frm a garden. “This is imprtant as it avids the need t separate and clean up cellulse, which can be bth difficult and cstly,” said Bwker.
32. What are needed t get hydrgen frm grass?
A A catalyst and palladium.B. Water and cellulse.
C. Sunlight and a biplymer.D. Sunlight and a catalyst.
33. Why is the new way f making hydrgen cnsidered significant?
A. It is cheap, green and sustainable.
B. It is the best t prduce the renewable energy.
C. It is mre prductive and efficient than ther methds.
D. It can replace the way t make fssil fuels cmpletely.
34. Why des nickel interest the researchers in making hydrgen frm cellulse?
A. It can prduce the largest amunt f hydrgen.
B. It can avid separating and cleaning up cellulse.
C. It is mre cmmn than ther metals and csts less.
D. It wrks quicker than ther metals during phtcatalysis.
35. What des the authr intend t tell us mainly in this passage?
A. Catalysts that culd be taken frm grass.
B. A new way f making hydrgen frm cellulse.
C. The ptential f hydrgen as a renewable energy.
D. The cnnectin between hydrgen and phtcatalysis.
