William Lindesay, a famus Great Wall expert and cnservatinist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled the glbe by the back paths, prviding their sns with a unique grwing envirnment. Sun hats, backpacks and sneakers (运动鞋)—these are the day-t-day must-haves fr the family.
Mst f their trips seem far frm relaxing—cultural study in the ht and dry desert, a 53-kilmeter hiking tur f New Zealand, a ne-day climb t three English muntaintps and a six-day train ride frm Beijing t Mscw.
Many assume the family must be wealthy and can affrd their glbal travel, but they are nt. Lindesay says they just chse t spend mney n travel and eschew pricey htels and restaurants where pssible. Lindesay mentins the trip t Mscw as an example. Instead f taking a taxi frm the railway statin t the htel, they tk the subway. “We crssed the city fr saving mney, cmmunicated with lcal peple, and saw they are peple just like us, everywhere. We arrived at ur destinatin feeling cmfrtable.”
Hwever, their jurneys, which can last weeks r mnths, have smetimes been incnsistent with their children’s schling. Researchers are trying t explre creative ways t reduce e-waste. Nw ne team has invented a water-activated battery (水激活电池) made f paper and ther sustainable(可持续的) materials.
Sme e-waste is relatively large: ld phnes and air cnditiners, fr instance. Other e-waste is mre unnticeable, such as batteries. It’s these small batteries that are big prblems. Nbdy really pays attentin t where they end up. Researchers at the Swiss Federal Labratries fr Materials Science and Technlgy are wrking t address this prblem. They invented a water-activated paper battery using envirnmentally friendly materials that culd eventually replace the mre harmful batteries cmmn in lw-pwer devices.
A traditinal battery is made f plastic, metal r ther harmful materials. The paper battery wrks the same as a traditinal battery. It has a psitively charged (带电的) side, a negatively charged side, and a cnductive material (传导材料) between the tw. In the new battery, the psitively and negatively charged sides are inks printed nt the frnt and back f a piece f paper. That paper is filled with salt, which disslves (溶解) when the paper is wet. When the paper is dry, the battery is ff. Once the paper is wet, the battery activates within 20 secnds. The new battery’s perating perfrmance wrsens as the paper dries. When the scientists rewet the paper during testing, the battery begins t wrk again and lasts an hur befre beginning t dry ut again.
Althugh the researchers shwed that their battery culd pwer an alarm clck, it is unlikely t replace standard batteries nw. It is hard t predict a time line fr prducing such batteries in a large number, but that future may nt be s far ff.
“This really starts with the develpment f sustainable materials,” Nyström, the lead authr, explains, “Frm there, I think we are able t create smething that is quite useful.”
28.Why did the researchers invent the new batteries?
A.T replace harmful batteries.B.T develp sustainable materials.
C.T pwer cmmn devices.D.T make e-waste mre nticeable.
29.In what aspect are the traditinal and the new batteries different?
A.Sizes.B.Usages.C.Materials.D.Purpses.
30.What d we knw abut the paper used in the new batteries?
A.It dries within 20 secnds.B.It can be used many times.
C.It has ink n the frnt side.D.It breaks easily in salt water.
31.What can be inferred abut the new battery frm the last tw paragraphs?
A.It stres huge pwer.B.It takes ages t make it.
C.It has been put int market.D.It has a prmising future.

When I mentined t sme friends that we all have accents(口音), mst f them prudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind f misses the pint.
Mre ften than nt, what we mean when we say smene “has an accent” is that their accent is different frm the lcal ne, r that prnunciatins are different frm ur wn. But this definitin(定义) f accents is limiting and culd give rise t prejudice. Funnily enugh, in terms f the language study, every persn speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in hw we prduce sunds that define ur accents. Even if yu dn’t hear it yurself, yu speak with sme srt f accent. In this sense, it’s pintless t pint ut that smene “has an accent”. We all d!
Every persn speaks a dialect (方言), t. In the field f language study, a dialect is a changed frm f a language that is featured by its variatins(变化) f structure, phrases and wrds. Fr instance,” Yu gt eat r nt? “(meaning “Have yu eaten?” ) is an acceptable and understd questin in Singapre Oral English. The fact that this expressin wuld cause a standard American English speaker t take pause desn’t mean that Singapre Oral English is “wrng” r “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-frmed and clearly cmmunicative, accrding t native Singapre English speakers’ slid system f grammar. Why shuld it be wrng just because it’s different?
We need t mve beynd a narrw idea f accents and dialects — fr the benefit f everyne.
Language differences like these prvide insights int peple’s cultural experiences and backgrunds. In a glbal age, the way ne speaks is a distinct part f ne’s identity(身份). Mst peple wuld be happy t talk abut the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn mre abut the wrld we live in and make friends alng the way.
32.What des the authr think f his/ her friends’ respnse in paragraph 1?
A.It reflects their self cnfidence.
B.It reflects their language levels.
C.It misses the pint f cmmunicatin.
D.It misses the real meaning f accents.
33.Why des the authr use the example f Singapre Oral English?
A.T supprt the use f dialects.
B.T shw the imprtance f dialects.
C.T crrect a grammatical mistake.
D.T highlight a traditinal methd.
34.What des the authr recmmend us t d in the last paragraph?
A.Learn t speak with yur lcal dialect.
B.Lk fr an fficial definitin f accents.
C.Appreciate the value f accents and dialects.
D.Separate ur lcal languages frm thers’.
35.What can be a suitable title fr this passage?
A.Everyne Has an Accent
B.Accents Imprve Our Identities
C.Dialects Lead t Misunderstanding
D.Standard English Is at Risk

39 It is a gd idea t make a list f all the imprtant things yu have t learn, in rder f imprtance, and estimate hw much time yu need fr each ne. This will tell yu if yu have time t read slwly and carefully, r if yu can nly skim; als it will shw yu many times yu can affrd t lk ver the same infrmatin.
Because stress can have a negative effect n yur memry, it’s imprtant t stay calm during tests. 40 Breathing exercises during the examinatin, fr example, can be extremely effective in helping yu relax and reverse yur stress respnse: just take deep breaths, and let the stress cme ut when yu exhale(呼气).
