He still went n t win tw gld medals — winning each event he cmpeted in except fr ne, the javelin (标枪).The javelin was the nly event he didn’t win, prbably because he had never cmpeted in that event befre. It is interesting t nte that Thrpe had tried t thrw the javelin nce befre in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn’t knw that he culd thrw it with a running start He threw it standing still and was placed secnd.
At the Olympics, he als tk part in the decathln He finished first in tw events, third in fur events, and furth in tw mre. Thrpe ended up finishing third in the wrld. He was undubtedly a dminating frce that culdn’t be stpped and just kept n ging.

It isn’t just the beauty f vast natural wnders like the Grand Canyn that can take yur breath away. Yu can find awe in everyday things. A new research, published in the jurnal Emtin, fund that lder adults wh tk “awe walks” felt mre psitive emtins in their daily lives.

Vlunteers in the “awe grup” were instructed in hw t inspire awe as they walked. “We asked them t try t see the wrld with fresh eyes—t take in new details f a leaf r flwer, fr example,” Sturm says. Fr example, ne participant frm the awe grup wrte abut “the beautiful fall clrs and hw the leaves were n lnger crunchy(嘎吱响) underft because f the rain”—the wnder that small children feel as they embrace their expanding wrld. Hwever, peple in the ther grup were less fcused n the wrld arund them. One participant wrte, “I thught abut ur vacatin in Hawaii next Thursday.”
In additin, participants were asked t take selfies(自拍) in the beginning, middle, and end f each walk. Researchers fund that participants wh tk awe walks shwed a “small self”, in that they filled less f their phtgraphs with their wn image and mre with the backgrund scenery. “When we feel awe, ur attentin shifts frm fcusing n urselves t fcusing n the wrld arund us, ” Sturm says. “ Awe affects ur scial relatinships because it helps us t feel mre cnnected with the wrld, universe, and ther peple.”Their smiles als grew brader by the end f the study. “We analyzed the intensity f their smiles in the selfies, and participants wh tk awe walks displayed greater smiles ver time than thse wh tk cntrl walks. The frmer reprted greater psitive emtins in general, including mre jy and gratitude.”
Participants in the cntrl grup tk mre frequent walks than thse peple in the awe grup, the researchers discvered. But walking mre didn’t result in psitive changes in emtinal health r in the way their selfies were taken. But while Nrth America largely banned their killing in the 1970s, they cntinue t be hunted in Greenland t this day.
Elephants als have t deal with human hunters. Ivry pachers(象牙偷猎者)have greatly reduced the African elephant ppulatin, which used t cver the entire cntinent. The ivry trade was banned in 1990, but animal habitats and fd supplies have still declined. In Kenya, the human ppulatin has increased fur times ver the last 40 years while the elephant ppulatin declined by fur-fifths.
This has caused the elephants t adpt unique respnses t peple. Fr instance, elephants are terrified f the spear-waving Maasai, an ethnic grup f Kenya and Tanzania wh have ften hurt elephants when trying t prtect their wn cattle.
S nce in an experiment by a grup f zlgists, when elephants living clse t the Maasai were presented with three different T-shirts, ne belnging t a Maasai, anther t a different lcal and ne t a researcher, they nly reacted with fear t the Maasai shirt, literally smelling the danger.
Hwever, neither elephants nr killer whales cmmnly shw anger and hate fr peple. In fact, elephants are generally friendly t humans. It’s n surprise that Jennifer Senir’s insightful magazine cver stry “I lve My Children, I Hate My Life” is arusing much chatter — nthing gets peple talking like the suggestin that bringing up a child is nt a cmpletely fulfilling, life-enriching experience. Rather than cncluding that children make parents either happy r miserable, Senir suggests we need t redefine happiness: instead f thinking f it as smething that can be measured by mment-t-mment jy, we shuld cnsider being happy as a past-tense cnditin. Even thugh the day-t-day experience f raising kids can be extremely hard, Senir writes that “the very things that in the mment damage ur mds can later be surces f intense cntent and delight.”
The magazine cver shwing an attractive mther hlding a cute baby is hardly the nly Madnna-and-child image n newsstands this week. There are als stries abut newly adptive — and newly single — mm Sandra Bullck, as well as the usual “Jennifer Anistn is pregnant” news. Practically every week features at least ne celebrity mm, r mm-t-be, smiling n the newsstands.
In a sciety that s persistently celebrates prcreatin (繁衍), is it any wnder that admitting yu regret having children is equivalent t admitting yu supprt kitten-killing? It desn’t seem quite fair, then, t cmpare the regrets f parents t the regrets f the children. Unhappy parents rarely are encuraged t wnder if they shuldn’t have had kids, but unhappy childless flks are bthered with the message that children are the single mst imprtant thing in the wrld: bviusly their misery must be a direct result f the wide-pen baby-size hles in their lives.
Of curse, the image f parenthd that celebrity magazines like US Weekly and Peple present is hugely unrealistic, especially when the parents are single mthers like Bullck. Accrding t several studies cncluding that parents are less happy than childless cuples, single parents are the least happy f all. N shck there, cnsidering hw much wrk it is t raise a kid withut a partner t lean n; yet t hear celebrities tell it, raising a kid n their “wn” (read: with rund-the-clck help) is a piece f cake.
It is hard t imagine that many peple are stupid enugh t want children because it lks s fantastic — mst adults understand that a baby is nt a haircut. But it is interesting t wnder if the images we see every week f stress-free, happiness-enhancing parenthd aren’t in sme small, subcnscius way cntributing t ur wn dissatisfactins with the actual experience, in the same way that a small part f us hped getting a part f the way celebrities live might make us lk just a little bit like them.
12、Jennifer Senir suggests in her article that raising a child can bring ________.
    A. very temprary delight
    B. great enjyment in prgress
    C. happiness in ne’s memry
    D. cncern ver lve and hatred
    13、Paragraph 2 is intended t shw that ________.

    B. single mthers with babies deserve greater attentin.
    C. news abut pregnant celebrities is entertaining.
    D. having children is highly valued by the public.
14、Accrding t the passage, thse childless flks________.
    A. are less likely t be satisfied with their life
    B. are largely ignred by the media.
    C. fail t fulfill their scial respnsibilities.
    D. are cnstantly expsed t criticism.
15、Which f the fllwing can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
    A. Having children cntributes little t the glamur f celebrity mms.
    B. Celebrity mms have influenced ur attitude twards child raising.

    D. We smetimes neglect the happiness frm child raising.

We asked them t try t see the wrld with fresh eyes" Sturm says.Fr example,ne participant frm the awe grup wrte abut "the leaves were n lnger crunchy(嘎吱响) underft because f the rain"—the wnder that small children feels as they embrace their expanding wrld.("我们让他们尽量以新奇的眼光看待世界。"
Researchers fund that participants wh tk awe walks shwed a "small self," in that they filled less f their phtgraphs with their wn image and mre with the backgrund scenery.(研究人员发现,敬畏步行组的被试自拍照中,自己只占很小一部分,身后风景占了更大部分。) Their smiles als grew brader by the end f the study.(在研究的最后,他们的笑容愈发灿烂。)
    6、答案:A
But walking mre didn't result in psitive changes in emtinal health r in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the results were mainly due t experiencing awe,and nt just in spending time exercising.(但是,步行次数增加和自拍方式都不是促进积极健康情绪的因素。 故选A项。
A newly-published research fund that lder adults wh tk "awe walks" felt mre psitive emtins in their daily lives.(一项最新公布的研究发现,进行"敬畏步行"的老年人在日常生活中感受到更多积极的情绪。) Participants in the cntrl grup tk mre frequent walks than thse peple in the awe grup, the researchers discvered. But walking mre didn't result in psitive changes in emtinal health r in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the results were mainly due t experiencing awe,and nt just in spending time exercising.(研究人员发现,对照组比实验组步行次数更多。
划线单词this所在的句子是一个承上启下的句子,所以this指的是上文提到的内容,而上一段的最后一句“In Kenya, the human ppulatin has increased fur times ver the last 40 years while the elephant ppulatin declined by fur-fifths.(在肯尼亚,在过去的40年里,人口数量增加了4倍,而大象的数量减少了5分之4)”说的是人口的增加和大象数量的减少,由此可知,This代指人类和大象的数量变化。故选D项。
    10、答案:A
根据第四段的句子“Fr instance, elephants are terrified f the spear-waving Maasai, an ethnic grup f Kenya and Tanzania wh have ften hurt elephants when trying t prtect their wn cattle.(例如,大象害怕挥舞长矛的马赛人,这是肯尼亚和坦桑尼亚的一个民族,他们在试图保护自己的牲畜时经常伤害大象)”和第五段“S nce in an experiment by a grup f zlgists, when elephants living clse t the Maasai were presented with three different T-shirts, ne belnging t a Maasai, anther t a different lcal and ne t a researcher, they nly reacted with fear t the Maasai shirt, literally smelling the danger.(因此,在一组动物学家的一次实验中,当生活在马赛人附近的大象看到三种不同的T恤时,一件属于马赛人,另一件属于不同的当地人,一件属于研究人员,它们对马赛人的T恤只表现出恐惧,实际上是嗅到了危险)”可知,大象害怕马赛人的T恤,是因为它们嗅到了危险。 故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Can yu imagine smene hunting yu dwn with a gun? Mst f us wuld be terrified. S, it’s n surprise that that’s hw animals respnd, t.(你能想象有人拿着枪追杀你吗?我们大多数人都会害怕。所以,动物也会有这样的反应也就不足为奇了。)”可知,文章主要讲的是人类对动物的行为已经影响了动物对人类的感知。所以用D项“Human Actins Have Shaped Animal Cnsciusness(人类的行为塑造了动物的意识)”作为文章的题目与文章主题相符。故选D项。
    12、答案:C
