We're lucky t live in an age when the sum ttal f human knwledge is pretty available at the click f a buttn. We've never had access t s much infrmatin. 36 S here are a few strategies t sharpen yur critical thinking.
Watch ut fr cnfirmatin prejudice. 37 In repeated experiments, psychlgists have shwn we're much mre likely t accept smething as evidence if it cnfirms what we already think we knw. And we're much mre likely t ignre infrmatin if it is nt in line with ur views, which will affect ur ability t prcess infrmatin.
Acknwledge small differences. In life, mst situatins are varying and cmplicated. Admitting that can enrich the way that we view the wrld. Fr example, what elur is the sky? Well, the bvius answer is blue. But at sunrise r sunset, it can be red. On a cld misty mrning, white r gray. 38
Practise intellectual humility. One apprach t, well, arguing, is t let g f the idea f being “right”. Or at least seriusly cnsider that yu might actually be wrng. 39Really try t understand where the ther persn is cming frm. Arguing is just t waste smebdy's time.
40 It's mre imprtant than ever t knw where yur infrmatin is cming frm. That science-lking paragraph might lk very cnvincing until yu dig a little deeper and find it was just psted by smene having n qualificatins. That is the case we shuld nt verlk.
Engaging in critical thinking isn't as fun as picking up a pitchfrk, r feeling like yu're fundamentally right. But in the lng run, it leads t a mre curius, educated and harmnius sciety, which is the biggest win f all.
A. Avid mistakes.
B. Check yur surces.
C. We all enjy feeling like we're right.
D. S pay attentin t differences in many situatins.
E. But nt all f what's ut there is quite what it seems.
F. S dn't rush t decide, and be actively prepared t change yur mind.
G. Putting yurself int the ther persn's shes can have mre fruitful utcmes.

W: Yes, I think s. We need a break!
M: Have yu been spending a lt f mney?
W:N, that's the prblem! We're lking fr sme nice jewelry ——earrings r a gld chain maybe ... but we can't find anything we like.
M: And wh is it fr? Fr yur family, friends, r schlmates?
W: It's just fr urselves. We usually buy each ther smething special fr ur wedding celebratin every year. It's a little traditin we have.
M: Well, gd luck!
(Text 7)
M: Hi, can I sit n this chair?
W: Yes, yu may.
M: My flight is delayed s I have t spend anther hur at this airprt.
W:Oh it's sad t knw that. Where are yu heading t by the way?
M:I am ging back hme t Pakistan.
W: Oh great, hw is the weather there?
M: We have all the fur kinds f weather there and they can be extreme smetimes. Like sme regins are belw freezing pint and sme can be 48 degrees Celsius.
W: This is interesting; here in Malaysia we dn't have much weather variatin. And it stays almst the same thrughut the year.
M: Yu must visit Pakistan; it's amazingly beautiful in all weather cnditins.
W: I s wanted t visit Pakistan. And I will make a plan sn. I must g nw as check-in fr my flight has started.
M: Thank yu! It's nice meeting yu.
(Text 8)
W: Hw d yu advise peple t stay fit and healthy, Rashmi?
M: Well, I was reading a scientific jurnal just this mrning saying that wrking ut at the gym is actually less effective than ging fr a walk regularly in the park.
W:Really? Why did it say that?
M: I think the idea is that if yu d really intensive exercise, then yu're mre likely t reward yurself with a bigger snack at the end f the sessin. But if yu just stretch yur legs ften r take regular gentle exercise, it desn't have the same effect.
W:S what d yu d? Yu're in pretty gd shape.
M: Well, I try nt t pay t much attentin t my weight. I've never been a fan f the gym and I never g fr a run ——I find it bring. But recently I've gt int rad cycling. Every cuple f weeks a few f us g ut fr a ride in the cuntryside 40 r 50 kilmeters. The scenery's beautiful and it's a great way t enjy nature and stay fit at the same time.
(Text 9)
W:OK, Jack, s tell me abut yurself.
M: OK. I'm 24 years ld and I'm a very active persn. I dn't just mean that I play a lt f sprts althugh I d run and g t the gym several times a week. What I mean is that I'm a persn wh likes t get invlved in things. I've rganized a lt f scial events in my life. A recent ne was against the building f a new car park in the center f my hmetwn. And that was successful actually; we gt it stpped r at least delayed. S, as I was saying, I'm a firm believer in taking actin.
W: And yur current situatin?
M: Well, I graduated frm university tw years ag with a degree in jurnalism, but I haven’t been able t find a jb that really suited me. T be hnest, newspapers aren't an easy wrld t break int, unless yu have the right cntacts. S instead, I decided n a fresh apprach, which was t seek ut cmpanies I admire, basically any cmpany r rganizatin that's wrking fr sme psitive gd in sciety. And that's hw I fund yu. And my hpe is that when I find the right cmpany, they’ll see that I have the right attitude and the right skills, s that we can bth benefit frm wrking tgether, um, yeah ...
(Text 10)
M: I think the mst valuable lessn anyne has ever taught me was when I was abut 25. I was getting really frustrated with a guy I was wrking with. We'd set up ur wn web design business and Giles that was the name f my business partner ——wuld always get lst in little details and take ages making a first design t shw the custmer. And my dad said, “Lk, yu can't change ther peple; yu can nly change the way yu behave twards them.” S I accepted that was just Giles's way that he lved the little details—and I tried t think f it as a psitive thing, and we've gt n s much better ever since and wrked much mre effectively. S that's becme a srt f guiding principle fr me in life nt t try t change thers and I have t say, it's been very helpful t me.
