Learning a secnd language is tricky at any age and it nly gets tugher the lnger yu wait t pen that dusty French bk. Nw, in a new study, scientists have pinpinted the exact age at which yur chances f reaching fluency in a secnd language seem t plummet: 10.
The study, published in the jurnal Cgnitin, fund that it’s “nearly impssible” fr language learners t reach native-level fluency if they start learning a secnd tngue after 10. But that desn’t seem t be because language skills g dwnhill. “It turns ut yu're still learning fast. It’s just that yu run ut f time, because yur ability t learn starts drpping at arund 17 r 18 years ld ,” says study c-authr Jshua Hartshrne, an assistant prfessr f psychlgy at Bstn Cllege.
Kids may als be better than adults at learning new languages fr many reasns. Children’s brains are mre plastic than thse f adults, meaning they’re better able t adapt and respnd t new infrmatin. “All learning invlves the brain changing,” Hartshrne says, “and children’s brains seem t be a lt mre skilled at changing.”
Kids may als be mre willing t try new things (and t ptentially lk flish in the prcess) than adults are. Their cmparatively new grasp n their native tngue may als be advantageus. Unlike adults , wh tend t default t the rules and patterns f their first language , kids may be able t apprach a new ne with a blank slate.
These findings may seem discuraging, but it was heartening fr scientists t learn that the critical perid fr fluent language acquisitin might be lnger than they previusly thught. Sme scientists believed that the brief windw clses shrtly after birth, while thers stretched it nly t early adlescence. cmpared t thse estimates, 17 r 18—when language learning ability starts t drp ff— seems relatively ld.
“Peple fared better when they learned by immersin, rather than simply in a classrm. And mving t a place where yur desired language is spken is the best way t learn as an adult. If that’s nt an ptin, yu can mimic an immersive envirnment by finding ways t have cnversatins with native speakers in their wn cmmunities,” Hartshrne says. By ding s, it’s pssible t becme cnversatinally prficient—even withut the advantage f a child’s brain.
    8. The underlined wrd “plummet” in Paragraph 1 is clsest in meaning t “ ”.
    A. decreaseB. riseC. endD. vary
    9. What can be inferred frm Jshua Hartshrne’s wrds?
    A. Children are t yung t grasp a secnd language.
    B. Age 10-18 is the best time t learn a secnd language.
    C. Adults g beynd the critical perid fr learning a secnd language.
    D. cmmunicating with native speakers enables yu t master all the language skills.
    10. What may make adults reach native-level fluency in a secnd language?
    A. Flexibility f their brain.B. A firm grasp n mther tngue.
    C. Their intellectual maturity.D. A native language speaking wrkplace.
    11. The passage is mainly abut .
    A. the best age t learn a secnd language
    B. the appraches t learning a secnd language
    C. why kids learn a secnd language mre easily than adults
    D. whether adults can learn a secnd language like their yunger selves
A 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据第二段中“The study, published in the jurnal Cgnitin, fund that it’s “nearly impssible” fr language learners t reach native-level fluency if they start learning a secnd tngue after 10.” A. decrease下降;B. rise上升;C. end结束;D. vary变化。故选A。
根据第二段中““It turns ut yu're still learning fast. It’s just that yu run ut f time, because yur ability t learn starts drpping at arund 17 r 18 years ld ,” says study c-authr Jshua Hartshrne, an assistant prfessr f psychlgy at Bstn Cllege.(该研究报告的联名作者、波士顿学院心理学助理教授乔舒亚·哈特肖恩说:“事实上,你还是能学得很快。问题在于这时候你的时间已经不多了,因为到了17~18岁左右,人的学习能力就会开始下降。”)”以及第三段中““All learning invlves the brain changing,” Hartshrne says, “and children’s brains seem t be a lt mre skilled at changing.”(哈特肖恩说:“所有学习都跟大脑的改变有关,而孩子的大脑对改变的适应能力似乎比成年人强得多。”)”
根据最后一段中““Peple fared better when they learned by immersin, rather than simply in a classrm. And mving t a place where yur desired language is spken is the best way t learn as an adult. If that’s nt an ptin, yu can mimic an immersive envirnment by finding ways t have cnversatins with native speakers in their wn cmmunities,” Hartshrne says.( Hartshrne说:“人们通过浸入式学习比单纯在教室里学习效果更好。作为一个成年人,搬到一个你想要学习的语言的地方是最好的学习方式。如果这不是一个选择,你可以通过寻找方法在自己的社区与母语人士进行对话来模拟一个沉浸式的环境”)”可知,成年人在学习第二语言时更应该选择身临其境的环境而不是在教室里。故选D。
    【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Nw, in a new study, scientists have pinpinted the exact age at which yur chances f reaching fluency in a secnd language seem t plummet: 10.(现在,科学家们在一项新的研究中精确地指出了你达到流利的第二语言的机会下降的确切年龄:10岁)”;第二段中“The study, published in the jurnal Cgnitin, fund that it’s “nearly impssible” fr language learners t reach native-level fluency if they start learning a secnd tngue after 10.(这篇发表在《认知》杂志上的研究发现,如果语言学习者从10岁以后才开始学习第二语言,他们就“几乎不可能”达到母语水平的流利程度)”以及第三段中“Kids may be better than adults at learning new languages fr many reasns.(在学习新语言方面,孩子们可能比成年人做得更好,原因有很多)”结合主要说明了为什么孩子比成年人学第二语言更容易。

Sme earlier studies had fund n clear clr preference amng msquites. One study fund they prefer blue, anther that they prefer yellw-green. What shuld peple make f such cnflicting results?
The apparent clr f an bject desn’t just depend n the wavelengths f light it gives ff, Claire Rusch explains, wh studies msquites fr years. It als can be affected by the brightness f that light and its cntrast against surrunding clrs. Humans see an bject’s clr largely in terms f the wavelengths f light it gives ff. But ther creatures’ eyes may be mre sensitive t cntrast r brightness. “We needed t cntrl all f thse variables t really be sure a msquit’s preferences came frm the wavelength f the bject,” Rusch says.
T d this, she designed a test chamber (室) that was 450 msquit-bdy-lengths lng in her experiment. Lined with cameras, it recrded the insects’ flight patterns. Tw small clred disks laid n the flr f the chamber.
Since the researchers wanted t knw if msquites were attracted t certain clrs, the disks culdn't be the darkest r brightest bjects in the chamber. Otherwise, it wuld be unclear if the msquites were attracted t the disks’ clr, cntrast r brightness. S, the researchers prjected a chessbard pattern nt the flr f the chamber and gray alng the walls. That way, if the msquites went t the clred disks, it culd nly be due t the disks’ clr.
The researchers released abut 50 starved msquites int the chamber at a time. Because msquites dn't start hunting until they’ve sensed CO2, s the team sprayed (喷) CO2 inside the chamber. They fund befre CO2 was sprayed, the msquites ignred all the clred disks. With CO2, msquites ignred any disk that was green, blue r purple. But the insects did fly tward disks that were red, range r light blue. They seemed t especially like red.
T further investigate that, the team placed disks with different skin tnes. But the msquites didn't seem t prefer any particular skin clrs. All were equally attractive.
    12. What can be inferred abut msquites frm the first tw paragraphs?
    A. The wavelengths determine the clr f an bject.
    B. The backgrund clr affects msquites’ eyesight.
    C. Msquites’ eyes are nt sensitive t clr cntrast.
    D. Testing their clr preference is nt s easy.
    13. What might affect the result f the experiment?
    A. The length f the chamber.B. The number f msquites.
    C. The brightness f the disks.D. The pattern f the chessbard.
    14. Why is CO2 used in the experiment?
    A. T take clearer phts f msquites.B. T stimulate msquites t lk fr fd.
    C. T slw dwn the speed f msquites.D. T raise the temperature in the chamber.
    15. What can be Rusch’s research finding?
    A. Cl clrs can drive msquites away.
    B. Skin clrs are msquites’ favrite.
    C. Peple in red may attract mst msquites.
    D. All clrs are equally attractive t msquites.
D 13. C 14. B 15. C
通过第二段“Humans see an bject’s clr largely in terms f the wavelengths f light it gives ff. But ther creatures’ eyes may be mre sensitive t cntrast r brightness. “We needed t cntrl all f thse variables t really be sure a msquit's preferences came frm the wavelength f the bject,” Rusch says. (人类看到物体的颜色很大程度上取决于它发出的光的波长。但其他生物的眼睛可能对对比度或亮度更敏感。“我们需要控制所有这些变量,以真正确定蚊子的偏好来自物体的波长,”Rusch说)”可之,其他生物(蚊子)对对比度或亮度较敏感,所以做有关蚊子对颜色偏好的实验并不容易,要控制好所有变量才能得到准确结果,故答案为D。
    【13题详解】
推理判断题。由第四段“Since the researchers wanted t knw if msquites were attracted t certain clrs, the disks culdn't be the darkest r brightest bjects in the chamber. Otherwise, it wuld be unclear if the msquites were attracted t the disks' clr, cntrast r brightness. (因为研究人员想知道蚊子是否会被特定的颜色吸引,所以圆盘不能是室内最暗或最亮的物体。否则,蚊子是否被圆盘的颜色、对比度或亮度所吸引就不得而知了)”可知,研究人员在做实验时要注意圆盘的颜色,太亮太暗都不行,不然会影响实验结果。由此可推断出,C项“The brightness f the disks. (圆盘的亮度)”符合题意。故答案为C。
    【14题详解】
    细节理解题。由第五段“Because msquites dn't start hunting until they've sensed CO2, s the team sprayed(喷)CO2 inside the chamber. (因为蚊子在感应到二氧化碳后才会开始捕食,所以研究小组在室内喷洒了二氧化碳)”可知,研究人员喷洒二氧化碳的原因是为了吸引蚊子捕食。选项B中的“lk fr”呼应文中的“hunting”。故答案为B。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。倒数第二段“They fund befre CO2 was sprayed, the msquites ignred all the clred disks. With CO2, msquites ignred any disk that was green, blue r purple. But the insects did fly tward disks that were red, range r light blue. They seemed t especially like red. (他们发现,在喷洒二氧化碳之前,蚊子忽略了所有有颜色的圆盘。有了二氧化碳,蚊子会忽略任何绿色、蓝色或紫色的圆盘。但昆虫确实会飞向红色、橙色或浅蓝色的圆盘。它们似乎特别喜欢红色)”是研究结果,表明红色、橙色和浅蓝色吸引蚊子注意,尤其是蚊子可能会更偏爱红色,所以选项C“Peple in red may attract mst msquites. (穿红色衣服的人可能吸引大多数蚊子)”符合Rusch的研究结果,故答案为C。
