A new study fund sme primates (灵长类) are leaving their tree hmes and spending mre time n the grund.Led by Timthy Eppley,Ph.D.,scientists studied nearly 50 species f mnkeys and lemurs (狐猴) t lk at the reasn behind these changes.
Abut 15 years ag,Eppley wrked with suthern bamb lemurs,which were knwn t spend mst f their days in the trees,feeding n bamb leaves.Hwever,he was surprised t find these lemurs were spending mst time n the grund and had an incredibly diverse diet.He wndered whether habitat reductin and limited fd resurce availability were driving them mve t the grund.This inspired him t begin this study.
He reached ut t every researcher he culd find wh may have significant data n primates frm Madagascar r the Americas,the tw places with almst all tree-dwelling primates.
Eppley examined mre than 150,000 hurs f data bserved n 32 mnkey species and 15 lemur species at 68 sites.He fund that they spent an average f nly 2.5% f their time n the grund each mnth.But the findings shwed sme interesting differences.
“As habitats are degraded and the climate wrsens,primates that are flexible enugh t adapt because f their diverse diets r live in larger grups may be mre likely t shift t life n the grund,” Eppley says.“Hwever,ther species that rely n fruit diets r live in small grups are less adaptable and are less willing t leave the tree.Fr these species,we will still need t enfrce fast and effective cnservatin strategies t ensure their survival.”
