Yur Fd Chices Affect the Earth’s Climate
Every actin has a cst, even fr grwing fd and delivering it t yur dinner plate. A team f researchers has fund that meat prductin releases mre climate-warming pllutin than it des when prducing fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. Their calculatins suggest that peple culd d a lt t slw glbal warming if they limited the amunt f meat they eat.
There are plenty f “csts” f fd. As t the visible csts, peple pay mney fr the fd as well as the fuel needed t get grceries t the stre r restaurant. And there are less-visible “csts” f fd as well. Prducing fds takes resurces, fr example, the water used t irritate (灌溉) crp fields r the fertilizer and chemicals used t prmte plant grwth and fight pests.
Peter Scarbrugh at the University f Oxfrd in England decided t calculate sme f the less-visible pllutin created by fd prductin. His team fcused n greenhuse gases emitted thrugh the prductin f ur fd, including carbn dixide (CO2), methane (甲烷) and the nitrus xide (氧化亚氮). All three gases are pwerful in warming the earth’s atmsphere.
They cnducted a series f experiments and fed the data cllected int a cmputer and then included the amunt f greenhuse gases linked with prducing nearly 100 cmmn fds. Then the cmputer matched thse greenhuse-gas amunts t the mix f fds each persn had reprted eating.
It shws that the diet f smene whse meals included an average f 50 t 99 grams f meat each day wuld be respnsible fr the daily release f 5.6 kilgrams f CO2 equivalent (等量) while thse vegans had the lwest diet-linked greenhuse-gas emissins (2.9 kg f CO2 equivalent).
It is cncluded that reducing the intake f meat and ther animal-based prducts can make a valuable cntributin t climate change reductin. And cmpared t meat, mre plant-based fd can be grwn n mre lands with less water and ther resurces. In places where many peple are ging hungry, raising animals fr meat may make it harder t ensure that everyne gets enugh t eat.
21. What d the researchers’ calculatins suggest?
22. Why des the authr say there are als less-visible “csts” f fd?
23. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
Althugh plant-based fd is harder t adapt t mre types f lands than meat, it has a lwer requirement f water and ther resurces.

【答案】21. Their calculatins suggest that peple culd d a lt t slw glbal warming if they limited the amunt f meat they eat.
22. Because prducing fds takes resurces, fr example, the water used t irritate crp fields r the fertilizer and chemicals used t prmte plant grwth and fight pests.
Because the authr wants peple t knw that prducing fds takes resurces, fr example, the water used t irritate crp fields r the fertilizer and chemicals used t prmte plant grwth and fight pests.
23. Althugh plant-based fd is harder t adapt t mre types f lands than meat, it has a lwer requirement f water and ther resurces.Accrding t the text, the plant-based fd can nt nly use less water and ther resurces, but such fd can be grwn n mre lands. S it is easier t adapt t mre types f lands than meat.
24. I will try my best t save electricity, fr example, using energy-efficient light bulbs instead f regular bulbs, which can last lnger. Als, I will make sure t turn ff lights, the TV, and ther appliances when I’m nt using them. Anther way t reduce electricity use is t lwer the air cnditining r heat when it’s nt necessary.
