Seaflr cables(光缆) carry ver 95% f all digital data traffic wrldwide, including financial trading infrmatin and scial media cmmunicatins. Hwever, hw the Earth's changing climate culd impact this vast undersea netwrk has been relatively understudied until nw.
In a new study published in Earth-Science Reviews, an internatinal team f researchers led by the UK's Natinal Oceangraphy Centre(NOC) wrked t illuminate this prblem by assessing hw and where future climate change is likely t impact subsea cables.
By analyzing published datasets, the researchers identified reginal climate change “htspts” where threats t subsea cables may becme mre intense. These include areas in the western Pacific where changes t trpical cyclne(热带气旋) intensity and frequency have already increased cable damage.
"In ur paper, we cnducted the first cmprehensive assessment f a range f climate-related threats t seaflr cables acrss the glbe and their landing statins," says study c-authr Thmas Wahl. “Our analysis clearly stresses the need t carefully plan cable rutes and landing statin lcatins factring in a range f lcal threats and hw thse are affected by climate change. "
When we lk at Flrida, there are at least 21 subsea telecmmunicatins cables that cnnect t the Flrida castline, Nrth and Suth America and the Caribbean, meaning that there will be a breakdwn in cmmunicatins wrldwide if a cable is damaged, the researchers say.
Hwever, the study identifies the imprtance f assessing changing cnditins, particularly where multiple cable systems share a landing pint, as they may be affected by cmbinatins f threats that affect the lw-lying Flrida castline, such as sea level rise, and changes in strm activity. “Our reliance n cables that are n wider than a garden hse(软管) is a surprise t many, wh regard satellites as the main means f cmmunicatin," says lead authr Mike Clare, a researcher with NOC. “But satellites simply dn't have the bandwidth t supprt mdern digital systems. The ‘clud' is nt in the sky—it is under the sea. "

Fr Kurt Gray, a scial psychlgist at the University f Nrth Carlina at Chapel Hill, cnducting experiments cmes with certain prblems. Then his team has t hire nline participants—easier than bringing peple int the lab, but Gray says the nline subjects are ften lazy. Then the researchers spend hurs cleaning the data. But earlier this year, Gray accidentally saw an alternative way t d things.
He was wrking with cmputer scientists at the Allen Institute fr Artificial Intelligence t see whether they culd develp an AI system that made mral judgments like humans. But first they figured they'd see if a system frm the startup OpenAI culd already d the jb. The team asked GPT-3.5, which prduces human-like text, t judge the ethics f 464 scenaris(情境), previusly evaluated by human subjects. It turned ut that the system's answers were nearly the same as human respnses.
“This is crazy," Gray says. “If yu can just ask GPT t make these judgments, why dn't yu just ask GPT instead f asking peple?" The results were published this mnth in Trends in Cgnitive Science.
Nw, researchers are cnsidering AI's ability t act as human subjects in fields such as psychlgy, plitical science, ecnmics, and market research. N ne is yet suggesting that chatbts can cmpletely replace humans in behaviral studies. But they may act as cnvenient stand-ins(替代者) in pilt studies and fr designing experiments, saving time and mney. Language mdels might als help with experiments that wuld be t impractical, r even dangerus t run with peple. "It's a really interesting time," says Ayelet Israeli, a marketing prfessr at Harvard Business Schl wh believes the mdels' impact n behaviral research culd amunt t a "revlutin". "Sme f these results are just astnishing."

B. They may replace human subjects cmpletely.
C. They will imprve peple's well-being.
D. They might prmte ecnmic grwth.
35、Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
