Being able t land safely is a critically imprtant skill fr all flying animals. Whereas terrestrial animals face n particular challenge when they need t stp running r crawling, flying animals mve at much higher speeds, and they must be careful abut hw they land. Hitting the grund, r even water, at full flight speed wuld be quite dangerus. Befre tuching dwn, they must decrease their speed in rder t land safely. Bth bats and birds have mastered the skill f landing, but these tw types f flyers g abut it quite differently.
In the past it was believed that, in terms f flying mechanics, there was little difference between bats and birds. This belief was based nly n assumptin, hwever, because fr years nbdy had actually studied in detail hw bats mve their wings. In recent years, thugh, researchers have discvered a number f interesting facts abut bat flight. Bats are built differently frm birds, and their wings incrprate(结合) bth their frnt and hind limbs (后肢). This makes their limbs wrking tgether mre difficult fr bats and, as a result, they are nt very gd at flying ver lnger distances. Hwever, a bat can quickly change its directin f flight r cmpletely reverse it, smething a bird cannt easily d.
Anther interesting characteristic f bat flight is the way in which bats land—upside dwn! Unlike birds, which tuch dwn n the grund r n tree branches, bats can be bserved flying arund and then suddenly hanging upside dwn frm an bject verhead. Hw d they d it? A grup f researchers recently used vide cameras t film bats landing n nets suspended frm the ceiling f their labratry and studied the recrdings in slw mtin. They painted spts n the bats’ wings t see in detail what happens t the wings in flight and during tuchdwn. It turns ut that the bats flew in a straight line up t the net and then quickly flipped ver and attached themselves t it upside dwn. One disadvantage t this landing rutine is that the bats ften slam int their landing spt with sme frce, which prbably causes pain. Hwever, nt all bats hit their landing spts with the same speed and frce; these will vary depending n the area where a bat species makes its hme. Fr example, a cave bat, which regularly rests n a hard stne ceiling, is mre careful abut its landing preparatin than a bat mre accustmed t landing in leafy treetps.
7.In line 1, the wrd terrestrial is clsest in meaning t _______.
    A.high-flyingB.fast-mvingC.tree-climbingD.grund-living

    C.Flying ver great distances.
    D.Balancing n high branches.
9.Accrding t the passage, what is an advantage that bats have ver birds?
    A.Bats can land n a greater variety f surfaces.
B.Bats can turn in the air mre quickly.
    C.Bats can eat while flying.
    D.Bats are lighter.
10.What is the main tpic f the passage?
A.Places where flying animals chse t land.

C.Differences in the eating habits f bats and birds.

Can We Stp Fd Lnging Thrugh Imaginary Eating?
Are yu fighting an urge t reach fr chclate? Then, let it melt in yur mind, nt in yur muth. Accrding t the recent research, imagining eating a specific fd reduces yur interest in that fd, s yu eat less f it.
This reactin t repeated expsure t fd—being less interested in smething because yu’ve experienced it t much—is called habituatin. _____11_____
The research is the first t shw that habituatin can ccur thrugh the pwer f the mind. “If yu just think abut the fd itself—hw it tastes and smells—that will increase yur appetite,” said Carey Mrewedge, a well-knwn psychlgist. “It might be better t frce yurself t repeatedly think abut chewing and swallwing the fd in rder t reduce yur lnging. _____12_____ Visualizing yurself eating chclate wuldn’t prevent yu frm eating lts f cheese,” he added.
Mrewedge cnducted an interesting experiment. 51 subjects were divided int three grups. One grup was asked t imagine putting 30 cins int a laundry machine and then eating three chclates. _____13_____ Anther grup was asked t imagine putting three cins int a laundry machine and then eating 30 chclates. Lastly, a cntrl grup imagined just putting 33 cins int the machine—with n chclates. _____14_____ When they said they had finished, these were taken away and weighed. The results shwed the grup that had imagined eating 30 chclates each ate fewer f the chclates than the ther grups.
_____15_____ Physical signals—that full stmach feeling—are nly part f what tells us we’ve finished a meal. The research suggests that psychlgical effects, such as habituatin, als influence hw much a persn eats. It may lead t new behaviral techniques fr peple lking t eat mre healthily, r have cntrl ver ther habits.
A.What’s mre, this nly wrks with the specific fd yu’ve imagined.
B.Peple were advised t try different methds t perfrm the experiment.
C.Fr example, a tenth bite is desired less than the first bite, accrding t the study.
D.All f them then ate freely frm bwls cntaining the same amunt f chclate each.
E.It meant thse wh repeatedly imagined eating wuld cncern abut sme specific fd.
F.This requires the same mtr skills as eating small chclates frm a packet, the study says.
G.This study is part f the research lking int what makes us eat mre than we actually need.
