“It’s a windy day in Laguna San Ignaci, and the waves seem t cme frm all directins,” said Sara Clemence in Blmberg Businessweek. My children and I are riding n a 18-ft bat—small enugh that we can reach dwn int the water if a gray whale swims up alngside. And then we see what we’ve cme fr: a heart-shaped shwer f water and a dark mass rushing belw it. As instructed, we splash (溅泼) the water strngly t signal the huge whale, which turns ut t be a mther with her weeks-ld baby. The baby sn swims beneath ur bat, emerges t blw mist in my face, then “lies nt its side like a 2-tn puppy.” Leaning dwn, I tuched its skin gently. “It feels electric. Als, a bit like petting a hard-biled egg.”
San Ignaci is ne f very few places where a persn can pet a whale. The whales cme each year t the cast f Baja Califrnia t give birth and t mate. If yu’re lucky, yu can “shake hands with a leatheryfin (鳍)” r even “plant a kiss n a cld, salty cheek.” I usually wrry abut such interactins, because wild creatures can becme deeply stressed by human cntact. But bat numbers are strictly limited in these prtected waters. And any whale that appraches a bat des s n its wn terms. Like that baby whale: “We see him a few times, and he seems t like being petted and splashed.”
S we are tw species, cnnecting thrugh tuch, but als thrugh eye cntact: “Mre than nce, after nsing arund ur bat, a yung gray turns n its side s ne dark, baseball-size eye is lking up at us.” Whalers used t call gray whales “devil fish” because these magnificent creatures turn vilent when threatened—“r, say, when their babies are harmed.” That makes it feel even mre f a blessing when, n ur third day there, a large mama whale appraches the bat. “I’m splashing when I feel her nse press up int my hand.” Thugh she’s “wiser and apparently mre alert” than her child, “she still decides t trust us.”
4.Which f the fllwing statements is true accrding t the passage?
A.The writer was n a whale-tuching trip.
B.The writer’s bat went dwn with a huge wave.
C.The baby whale splashed water all ver the writer.
D.The mther whale’s skin felt as hard as a biled egg.
5.By “des s n its wn terms” (in paragraph 2), the writer means whales in San Ignaci are ______.
A.mad with t many visitrsB.ready fr hands-n attentin
C.restricted in swimming rutesD.enclsed in their safety znes
6.Gray whales gt the name f “devil fish” frm their ______.
A.strange appearanceB.inbrn vilence
C.surprisingly enrmus sizeD.fierceness in danger
7.The writer’s implied purpse in the passage is t ______.
A.ppularize the knwledge f whalesB.shw admiratin fr whales’ mtherhd
C.share an experience f the sea vyageD.advcate harmny between man and nature

The Greek histrian Herdtus reprted ver 2,000 years ag n a misguided experiment in which tw children were prevented frm hearing human speech s that a king culd discver the true, unlearned language f human beings.
Scientists nw knw that human language requires scial learning and interactin with ther peple, a prperty shared with multiple animal languages. But why shuld humans and ther animals need t learn a language instead f being brn with this knwledge?
Given that the ways hneybees cmmunicate are quite cmplex, we decided t study hw they learn t cmmunicate t answer this language questin.
Bees pssess ne f the mst cmplicated examples f nnhuman cmmunicatin. They can tell each ther where t find resurces such as fd, water, r nest sites with a physical “waggle (摇摆) dance”, by circling arund in a figure eight pattern centered arund a waggle run. This dance cnveys the directin, distance and quality f a resurce t the bee’s nestmates.
Bees begin t dance nly as they get lder. Culd they be learning frm practiced teachers?
We thus created islated experimental clnies f bees (蜂群) that culd nt bserve ther waggle dances befre they themselves danced. Like the ancient experiment described by Herdtus, these bees culd nt bserve the dance language because they were all the same age and had n lder, experienced bees t fllw. In cntrast, ur cntrl clnies cntained bees f all ages, s yunger bees culd fllw the lder, experienced dancers.
We recrded the first dances f the bees. The bees that culd nt fllw the dances f experienced bees prduced dances with significantly mre directinal, distance and disrder crrrs than the dances f cntrl bees.
We then tested the same bees later, when they were experienced dancers. Bees wh had lacked teachers nw prduced significantly fewer errrs, pssibly because they had mre practice r had learned by eventually fllwing ther dancers. The dances f the cntrl bees remained just as gd as their first dances.
Cmplex cmmunicatin is ften difficult t prduce even when individuals are brn with sme knwledge f the crrect signals. Bees are brn with sme knwledge f hw t dance, but they have t learn hw t dance even better by fllwing experienced bees.
8.Why des the authr say the experiment n the tw children is a misguided experiment?
A.Language learning is a scial activity.B.Language learning has changed greatly.
C.Children are brn with human speech.D.Children develp differently in language.
9.What des the underlined wrd “islated” in paragraph 6 indicate?
A.Old bees culd nt prduce waggle dances.B.Old bees culd nt bserve waggle dances.
C.Yung bees were separated frm lder nes.D.Yung bees culd fllw experienced bees.
10.What d we knw abut the bees whse dances remained as gd as their first dances?
A.They had little practice in waggle dances.
B.They had learned waggle dances withut teachers.
C.They were experienced in teaching waggle dances.
D.They had learned waggle dances befre their first dances.
11.What des the last paragraph serve as?
A.A guide t cmplex cmmunicatin.
B.An answer t why language shuld be learned.
C.An example f nnhuman cmmunicatin.
D.A prf that bees are brn with sme knwledge.

A new service gives new life t the past by using artificial intelligence t change still images int mving vides.
Called Deep Nstalgia, the service creates animatins (动画) by using deep learning t analyze a single facial pht. Then, the system animates the facial image thrugh a “driver" — a pre-determined sequence (次序) f mvements and gestures. The prcess is cmpletely autmated.
Launched by the Israeli genealgy cmpany My Heritage, sme f Deep Nstalgia's early results are impressive. But that's nt t say the animatins are perfect. There's still an uncanny air t the images, with sme f the facial mvements appearing slightly unnatural. What's mre, Deep Nstalgia is nly able t create deepfakes f ne persn's face frm the neck up, s yu culdn't use it t animate grup phts, r phts f peple ding any srt f physical activity.
But fr a free deep-fake service, Deep Nstalgia is pretty impressive, especially cnsidering yu can use it t create deepfakes f any face, human r nt. S, is creating deepfakes f lng-dead peple a bit frightening? Sme peple seem t think s. “Sme peple lve the feature with Deep Nstalgia and cnsider it magical while thers think it is scary and dislike it, ”My Heritage wrte n its website. “We invite yu t create mvies using this feature and share them n scial media t see what yur friends and relatives think. This feature is intended fr nstalgic (怀旧的) use, that is, t give life back t belved ancestrs.”
Deep Nstalgia isn't the first prject t create deepfakes frm single images. In 2019, researchers wrking at the Samsung AI Center in Mscw published a paper describing hw machine-learning techniques can prduce deepfakes after “lking" at nly ne r a few images.
While the results frm the Samsung researchers were impressive, the Deep Nstalgia prject shws hw deepfake technlgy is advancing at a rapid pace. As these tls have becme increasingly ppular, media experts have raised cncerns abut hw bad actrs might use deepfakes and “cheap fakes” t trick the public. My Heritage seemed t sense Deep Nstalgia's ptential r abuse, writing: “Please use this feature n yur wn histrical phts and nt n phts f living peple withut their agreement.”
12.What can we infer frm the passage?
A.Deep Nstalgia enhances the images t make the animatins perfectly natural.
B.Deep Nstalgia is able t create deepfakes f peple's physical activity.
C.Peple hld different pinins abut Deep Nstalgia.
D.The Samsung Al Center in Mscw prduced deepfakes after Deep Nstalgia.
13.Which f the fllwing can be used t replace the underlined wrd in Paragraph 3?
A.Strange.
B.Artificial.
C.Perfect.
D.Impressive.
14.What attitude des My Heritage hld twards the future use f deepfakes?
A.Optimistic.
B.Alarmed.
C.Ambiguus.
D.Pessimistic.
15.What culd be the best title fr the passage?
A.Deepfake technlgy raises cncern amng experts.
B.Deepfake technlgy advances at a fast pace.

Jseph Cnrad, a famus English nvelist, said that his gal as a writer was “t make yu hear, t make yu feel, and abve all, t make yu see. That, and n mre, is everything.” 16 Often it leaves a single sharp impressin t be turned ver and ver in the mind. After finishing the stry, the reader shuld have smething t think abut: the humr f life, its irnies, r the unpredictability f human behavir.
17 The first and mst bvius level is cnveyed thrugh the plt. Plt refers t the sequence f events, t the actins f the characters and the situatins in which they are invlved. T explain the plt, then, is t tell what happened in the stry and t whm. In sme shrt stries, plt is the dminating element. In ther shrt stries, plt plays a very minr rle.
In Hemingway’s stry, The Old Man and the Sea, hwever, we must apprach the cntent n anther level. 18 T understand and appreciate the stry, the reader must be able t identify its general tpic r theme. The next step is t identify the device by which the authr cmments n this theme. 19
Readers cannt appreciate a shrt stry fully unless they react nt nly t what has been said but als t hw it has been said. 20 Style grws ut f the writer’s wn persnality and can be seen in the chice f wrds and phrases, the arrangement f sentences, the rhythm and tne. Structure refers t the architecture f the stry, the way in which the details are selected and arranged t prduce the desired effect.
A.They must lk fr style and structure.
B.In cmplex stries, careful readers may nt always agree with the authr.
C.The impact n the reader cmes frm the sudden and unexpected respnse.
D.A gd shrt stry tries t give the reader a sense f the actual experience.
E.Finally, the reader shuld be able t explain the insights which the authr has given int the theme.
F.The impact f the stry cmes frm the insight it gives us int the needs and desires f yuth and ld age.
G.In rder t read a shrt stry with full understanding, the reader must apprach the cntent n tw levels.

Peple n a cllege campus were mre likely t give mney t the March f Dimes if they were asked fr a dnatin by a disabled wman in a wheelchair than if asked by a nndisabled wman. In anther 21 , subway riders in New Yrk saw a man carrying a stick stumble and fall t the flr. Smetimes the victim had a large red birthmark n his 22 ; smetimes he did nt. In this situatin, the victim was mre likely t 23 aid if his face was sptless than if he had an unattractive birthmark. In 24 these and ther research findings, tw 25 themes are fund: we are mre willing t help peple we like fr sme reasn and peple we think 26 assistance.
In sme situatins, thse wh are physically attractive are mre likely t receive aid. 27 , in a field study researchers placed a cmpleted applicatin t graduate schl in a telephne bx at the airprt. The applicatin was ready t be 28 , but had apparently been “lst”. The pht attached t the applicatin was smetimes that f a very 29 persn and smetimes that f a less attractive persn. The measure f helping was whether the individual wh fund the envelpe actually mailed it r nt. Results shwed that peple were mre likely t 30 the applicatin if the persn in the pht was physically attractive.
The degree f 31 between the ptential helper and the persn in need is als imprtant. Fr example, peple are mre likely t help a stranger wh is frm the same cuntry rather than a freigner. In ne study, shppers n a busy street in Sctland were mre likely t help a persn wearing a (n) 32 T-shirt than a persn wearing a T-shirt printed with ffensive wrds.
Whether a persn receives help depends in part n the “wrth” f the case. Fr example, shppers in a supermarket were mre likely t give smene 33 t buy milk rather than t buy ckies, prbably because milk is thught mre essential fr 34 than ckies. Passengers n a New Yrk subway were mre likely t help a man wh fell t the grund if he appeared t be 35 rather than drunk.
