What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dgs. Why? Because they can smell peple. Dgs save lives. They help rescuers t find living peple. But dgs are big and they can’t get int small spaces. S nw a new research prject is using a smaller animal t save lives: the rat.
Hw des it wrk? First, the rat is trained t smell peple. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal. This is sent t a small radi n its back, and then the rescuers fllw the radi signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers knw that smene is alive. The rat has smelled that persn.
Althugh there are already rbts which can d this jb, rats are better. Christian Linster at Crnell University, New Yrk, says, “Rbts’ nses dn’t wrk well when there are ther smells arund. On February 4, 2019, the rescue f the wrld heritage site was celebrated at an event held at the museum with Chief Executive Pietr Salini, Muse Egizi Directr Christian Grec and UNESCO Reginal Directr Ana Luiza Thmpsn-Flres attending.
“Taking dwn tw temples piece by piece, putting them back tgether elsewhere and perfectly rebuilding the landfrms (地貌) arund them was a great idea and shwed us a new frntier (领域) fr cultural prtectin,” said Salini. “It als shwed the wrld that prgress did nt have t cme at the expense f a wrld heritage site. Tday, 50 years after this fantastic prject, we remember with great admiratin all thse peple frm different cuntries and cultures, wh, with their unique skills, achieved this impressive achievement fr future generatins.”
The wrk f mving the temples, in which Impregil tk part, was dne with the supprt f 50 cuntries and sme 2, 000 peple in little mre than 1,100 days.
This unique prject is als being celebrated with the publicatin f “Nubiana”, a multimedia tme (多媒体巨著) that tells the stry f the temples built mre than 3,000 years ag in hnur f the great Pharah Ramesses II. It als describes the engineering challenges f their rescue by internatinal teamwrk.

While elephants brn withut tusks (长牙)are nt unheard f,they nrmally frm just 2 t 6 percent f the ppulatin. Hwever, that is nt the case at Mzambique’s Grngsa Natinal Park, where an astnishing 33 percent f female elephants brn after the cuntry’s civil war ended in 1992 are tuskless. While that may appear t be just a cincidence, Jyce Ple, an elephant behavir expert, has anther thery. Hwever, by the time the cnflict ended in 1992, abut 90 percent f them had been killed fr ivry t help finance weapns (武器)and meat t feed the sldiers. Of the less than 200 survivrs, ver 50 percent f adult females had n tusks. Therefre, it is nt surprising that the park’s tuskless elephant ppulatin has grwn greatly.
This is nt the first time researchers have bserved a great change in the ppulatin f elephants. At Zambia’s Suth Luangwa Natinal Park and Lupande Game Management Area, areas which were heavily hunted in the 1970s and 1980s, 35% f elephants 25 years r lder and 13% f thse yunger than 25 are nw withut tusks. A 2008 study published fund that the number f tuskless females at the Ruaha Natinal Park in Tanzania went frm 10.5 percent in 1969 t almst 40 percent in 1989, largely due t illegal hunting fr ivry.
The recent ban n ivry in bth the US and China shuld help get rid f, r at least reduce, elephant hunting. Hwever, scientists are nt sure hw lng it will take fr elephants with a higher rate f tuskless females, t change the trend.
