Peple eat mre when they are glued t the televisin, and the mre entertaining the prgram, the mre they eat, accrding t new research.
It seems that distracted brains d nt ntice what the muth is ding, said Dr Alan Hirsch, neurlgical directr f the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Fundatin in Chicag. Hirsch explred the effect f smell, taste and eating behavirs while watching TV by measuring the number f ptat chip eaten.
Frty-five vlunteers ate as many chips as they wanted while they watched prgrams by late-night talk shw hsts David Letterman and Jay Len. They als were given chips t eat when the televisin was ff. Hirsh fund peple ate an average f 44 percent mre chips while watching Letterman and 42 percent mre while viewing Len, than when they did nt watch TV.
“If yu can cncentrate n hw the fd tastes yu’ll eat less because yu’ll feel full faster,” Hirsch said in an interview at the Endcrine Sciety’s annual meeting in Trnt. “S if that’s the case, let’s lk at the ppsite. What if yu’re distracted? If yu’re distracted, in thery, then yu’d eat mre.”
Thrugh his research at the fundatin, Hirsch has helped peple vercme the lss f sense and taste sensatin, which typically results in weight gain because the brain des nt knw when it shuld stp eating.
The ventrmedial nucleus(腹内侧核) in the hypthalamus(丘脑下部), where the s-called satiety center is lcated, tells the bdy whether it is hungry r full. If it is stpped r tricked, the result can be changed in eating patterns, he said, “Peple wh ck spaghetti all day dn't feel like eating spaghetti at the end f the day,” said Hirsch. “By being expsed t a smell all day lng it’s tricking the hypthalamus.”
Vlunteers were asked t cncentrate n the sensry characteristics f the fd such as taste and smell. Researchers say these sensry taste and smell, in additin t internal bdy changes, signal satiety. But when distracted, a persn des nt pay attentin t either the bdy's sensatins f feeling full, r t the sensry characteristics f the fd.
Many studies have linked besity t watching televisin and that link is likely due t inactivity, Hirsch said. But perhaps entertaining shws are als cntributing. “If yu want t lse weight, turn ff the televisin r watch smething bring,” he said.
8.Hw did Hirsch carry ut the research?
A.By watching peple eat.B.By interviewing peple.
C.By cunting hw many chips peple eat.D.By bserving hw peple watch televisin.
    9.What d Hirsch’s wrds in Para.6 mean?
A.They think spaghetti unhealthy.B.They have smelt spaghetti enugh.
C.They dn’t like eating spaghetti.D.Spaghetti has affected the hypthalamus.
    10.What d we knw frm Hirsch’s study?
A.Inactivity is likely t make peple fat.
B.Entertaining shws are the main causes f besity.
C.The mre cncentratin n fd taste, the less yu’ll eat.
D.The ventrmedial nucleus can tell whether ne is hungry r full.
11.What’s the main idea f this passage?
A.Peple eat mre when watching TV.B.It is nt gd fr ur health t eat chips.
C.Peple enjy eating while watching TV.D.Hw peple can enjy the TV prgrams.

Wild animals seem t have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami (海啸), adding weight t the idea that they pssess a “sixth sense” fr disasters, experts said n Thursday. Sri Lanka wildlife fficials have said the giant waves that killed ver 24,000 peple alng the Indian Ocean Island’s cast seemingly missed wild beasts, with n dead animals fund.

The waves washed fldwaters up t 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala Natinal Park in the sutheast, Sri Lanka’s biggest wildlife reserve (自然保护区) and hme t hundreds f wild elephants. “There has been a lt f evidence abut dgs barking r birds migrating befre vlcanic eruptins r earthquakes. But it has nt been prved,” said Matthew van Lierp, an animal behaviur specialist at Jhannesburg Z. “There have been n specific studies because yu can’t really test it in a lab r field setting,” he said. Other authrities agreed with this cnclusin. “Wildlife seems t be able t pick up certain phenmenn, especially birds. There are many reprts f birds detecting cming disasters,” said Clive Walker, wh has written several bks n African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely n the knwn senses such as smell r hearing t avid danger such as predatrs (食肉动物). The idea f an animal’s “sixth sense” is a lasting ne that the evidence n Sri Lanka’s damaged cast is likely t add t.
