Abdulrazak Gurnah was brn n 20 December 1948 n the island f Zanzibar, ff the cast f East Africa. He went t Britain as a student in 1968, after leaving Zanzibar at 18. He initially studied at Canterbury Christ Church Cllege, whse degrees were at the time awarded by the University f Lndn.
