“Wanted: Vilin. Can’t pay much. Cntact…”
I rarely read the classified advertisements, s why did I ntice that ne? I laid the paper n my lap and clsed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years befre, during the Great Depressin when my family struggled t make a living n ur farm. I, t, had wanted a vilin.
When my lder twin sisters began shwing an interest in music, Harriet Anne learned t play Grandma’s pian, while Suzanne turned t Daddy’s vilin. Simple tunes became lvely meldies. My baby brther danced; Daddy hummed and Mther whistled. I just listened.
When my arms grew lng enugh, I tried t play Suzanne’s vilin. Oh, hw I wanted ne! But I knew it was ut f the questin.
One evening as the twins played in the schl rchestra. I clsed my eyes tight t capture the picture firmly in my mind. Smeday, I’ll sit up there, I vwed silently.

“Can’t yu use Suzanne’s?”
“I’d like t be in the rchestra t, and we can’t bth use the same vilin at the same time.”
Daddy’s face lked sad. That night, and many fllwing nights, I heard him remind Gd in ur family prayers, “… and Lrd, Mary Lu wants her wn vilin.”
One evening we all sat rund the table. The twins and I studied. Mther sewed and Daddy wrte a letter t his friend, Gerge Finkle, in Clumbus, Ohi. Mr Finkle, Daddy said, was a fine vilinist.
When Daddy received a letter frm Clumbus a few weeks later, he asked me, “Mary Lu, d yu want t g with me t visit Mr Finkle?”
