Nrwegian playwright and authr Jn Fsse has just been awarded the 2023 Nbel Prize in Literature fr his “innvative plays and prse which give vice t the unsayable”. The authr was annunced as the winner in a ceremny at the Swedish Academy in Stckhlm n Thursday (5 Octber), which was als livestreamed n the Internet.
The Swedish Academy credits Fsse as “ne f the mst widely perfrmed playwrights in the wrld”, althugh the 64-year-ld riginally made his name as a nvelist, beginning with Red Black in 1983. He has since written many wrks f prse and petry. “His wrks, cvering a variety f genres(体裁), cmprises abut 40 plays and a wealth f nvels, petry cllectins, children’s bks and translatins,” said Olssn, chairman f the Nbel Cmmittee fr Literature.
Fsse draws inspiratin frm his rural living envirnment and persnal struggles, which have deeply influenced his unique writing style. Grwing up in a small seaside village, Fsse was lst in the beauty f nature and the vastness f the sea, which filled him with a sense f slitude and intrspectin(内省) that is reflected in his wrks. Fsse’s writing discussed themes f lneliness, lnging, and the search fr meaning in life. Additinally, his battles with depressin have enabled him t explre the depths f human emtins and despair.
Fsse is the first-ever winner writing in Nynrsk, ne f the tw fficial languages f Nrwegian, but nly used by just 10% f the ppulatin. As the Guardian writes, “Many Nynrsk speakers see Fsse ‘as a kind f natinal her’ fr his defending the language.” Fsse’s recgnitin n a glbal stage prmtes the visibility and imprtance f Nynrsk as a written standard. It will attract mre attentin t Nynrsk literature, inspire and encurage Nynrsk speakers t cntinue preserving and prmting their linguistic(语言的) heritage.

A team f scientists led by Ken Paller, a neurscientist at Nrthwestern University, think they may have fund a way t cmmunicate with dreamers.
Dr Paller’s starting pint was the fact that lucid dreams — in which sleepers are aware they are dreaming — seem t be linked t nly ne kind f sleep, knwn as “rapid eye mvement” (REM) sleep. During REM sleep, brain activity lks similar t that seen during waking hurs. Past research has shwn that it is pssible fr peple t be influenced by events taking place in the utside wrld during REM sleep. S Dr Paller thught that it might be pssible t reach ut t peple in such states and t get answers back.
Dr Paller and his clleagues gathered 35 vlunteers. All were trained t be mindful f their mental state and t analyze whether they thught they were awake r in a dream. They were als trained t make distinct left/right eye mvements t suggest they were aware they were dreaming and in respnse t questins. They practiced interpreting numbers displayed as flashes f light, taps n their arm, r even as spken wrds. Thus prepared, the vlunteers were wired up with electrdes (电极) and sent back t sleep. Once it was clear that cntact had been made, the researchers asked their questins and waited fr answers.
Interviewed when awake, the participants reprted that the questins had been encmpassed in their dreams. One said an audi questin was heard thrugh a car radi; anther said that flashes f light sent by the researchers appeared as a flickering light. One f the numerical questins even appeared as the street number f a huse.
The methd ften did nt wrk. Participants signaled that they were engaged in lucid dreaming in just 26% f the sessins. Of that grup, 47% answered at least ne questin put t them crrectly. But Dr Paller and his clleagues say their findings may help researchers cast sme light n what dreams are fr, and hw they wrk.
28. What can we learn abut Dr Paller’s research frm paragraph 2?
29. What were the vlunteers trained t d in the experiments?
30. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “encmpassed” in paragraph 4?

Bdy language is an essential part f cmmunicatin and can be just as imprtant as ur spken language exchanges. Bdy language can be bth cnscius(有意识的) r uncnscius actins, s it is imprtant t make sure yur bdy is sending the same messages as yur wrds t ensure gd cmmunicatin. These actins can strengthen the verbal messages yu’re sending r it can lead t mistrust r cnfusin — signs f pr cmmunicatin and misunderstanding.
Bdy language can make interacting with thers and expressing yurself much easier, but it can als intrduce new challenges. Sme nnverbal signs accidentally cmmunicate parts f urselves that we dn’t want thers t knw. Fr example, bad psture r fidgeting(坐立不安) may cmmunicate lack f cnfidence, smething we may nt intend fr thers t knw abut us. But bdy language can strengthen ur verbal messages and what we are telling thers. Facing smene with eye cntact r taking ntes while smene is speaking can cmmunicate real interest. Withut these signs, teachers may nt be able t assess a student’s understanding.
When yu’re speaking sincerely, it’s natural fr yur bdy language t respnd t yur wrds thrugh gestures r facial expressins. We als use gestures in cnversatins t tell stries r describe bjects, ften using hand signals t shw hw big r small smething is. These are largely uncnscius, naturally ccurring frms f bdy language.
It can be difficult t cmmunicate cnfidence in yur actins when yu may nt feel it internally. When yu display cnfident bdy language, such as gd psture r eye-cntact, even if yu’re making a cnscius effrt, studies have shwn that it can lead t feeling mre cnfident. When speaking t thers, practice cntrlling desires t fidget and planting yur feet cnfidently t increase self-respect.
What will yur bdy language tell if it can’t g with yur wrds?
33. What can be inferred frm the examples in paragraph 2?
34. What des the authr intend t tell in the last tw paragraphs?
What culd be a suitable title fr the text?
