Several Carmakers Push Plans t Offer Hydrgen-pwered Vehicles
Several big autmakers recently annunced plans t keep investing in hydrgen vehicle technlgy. The plans cme even as many industry experts believe the technlgy faces a majr uphill ____31____ t cmpete against battery-pwered electric cars.
Hydrgen-pwered cars are als knwn as fuel cell electric vehicles, r FCEVs. With these vehicles, fuel cells cnvert (转化) hydrgen gas int electricity. This differs frm electric vehicles, r EVs, which get their pwer frm a ____32____ battery.
Last mnth, the chief f Japan’s Tyta Mtrs, Aki Tyda, attended a race that ____33____ an experimental hydrgen vehicle. The vehicle ____34____ a traditinal gasline-pwered engine that had been cnverted t run n hydrgen.
Tyda tld reprters at the event such cnversins culd keep traditinal internal cmbustin engines (内燃机) running in a ____35____ wrld. This, he said, culd avid the need t cmpletely leave behind internal cmbustin and save millins f aut industry jbs.

The cmpany currently sells a passenger fuel cell vehicle called the NEXO. And Hyundai annunced it plans t ffer hydrgen fuel cell versins fr all its ____37____ vehicles by 2028.
In fuel cell technlgy, hydrgen cmbines with xygen t prduce electrical pwer. It is cnsidered clean energy because the prcess nly releases water and steam int the atmsphere. This makes the technlgy a gd ____38____ fr helping the wrld reduce its carbn emissins.
Currently, hwever, mst f the hydrgen prduced wrldwide is made using natural gas r cal — bth f which cause pllutin. Supprters f the technlgy expect that t change ver time. They say the ____39____ use f electricity frm wind and slar energy will be able t separate hydrgen and xygen in water. Thse prductin methds, hwever, are mre ____40____.

Bees have evlved t be skilled living builders that can build things many times their size. Bees inspired Mirk Kvac, a rbticist t develp a way t imprve the flexibility f 3D printing. A ____41____ 3D printer is limited by the range f its nzzle (喷嘴), and can nly make bjects smaller than itself. Dr Kvac’s team has remved the ____42____ by giving the printer nzzle wings.
In the latest editin f Nature, Dr Kvac describes a system f flying rbts that is cmpsed f tw types f drnes: builders and scanners. The builders carry the 3D-printing nzzle. The scanners are rbts equipped with cameras that are ____43____ fr mnitring the prgress f the builders.
In the building prcess, builders and scanners carry ut their respective tasks and ____44____ printing and adjusting, layer by layer, until a structure is cmplete. First, a builder keeps flying ver its area f peratin and begins t release a jet f the building material. The chice f material is imprtant—it must be lightweight enugh fr the drnes t carry but ____45____ enugh t hld the fllwing layers that will be built n tp. Once the builder rbt has released a layer f material, the scanner rbt flies ver and ____46____ the prgress. The system then cmputes the next layer that the builder shuld make, while als crrecting fr any errr that might have been discvered in what has already been built. These culd be errrs made by the builder-drnes r ____47____ in the expansin f the building material. At this pint, peple can als manually adjust the prcess, ____48____ and crrecting curse where necessary.
The researchers tested the system’s ____49____ by building bth a large cylinder (圆柱体)and a small cylinder. The tasks were nt simple. Making circles n tp f ther circles wuld nt have wrked, because the perfect match required in psitin wuld have been impractical t achieve. _____50_____, the builder rbt printed winding circles that interleaved with(交错;嵌入) the layers abve and belw, t ensure maximum stability.
The cylinders built by Dr Kvac’s rbts successfully meet the requirements f the British building cdes. _____51_____ these rbts have been shwn t be capable f manufacturing, Dr Kvac says their main task will prbably be, initially, in repair.
Because the flying rbts can, in thery, perate anywhere, they culd fix things in dangerus r therwise _____52_____ places. Dr Kvac says that his rbts culd be used t _____53_____and seal leaks in pipelines r fix cracks n tall buildings. These rbts culd be _____54_____ t wrk mre quickly, cheaply and with less risk t humans. Thinking mre lng term, Dr Kvac sees a _____55_____ future fr his cnstructin rbts, building n the surfaces f the Mn r Mars. But what we can say fr sure is that it will make a huge difference t cnstructin n Earth.

Being prepared is key t a gd ride in the winter. The increasing ppularity f winter cycling is due t the creatin f muntain bike and its imitatin. Equipped with mre stable bicycles, nthing seems t be able t stp the adventurus winter cyclists. Many f them wear running shes and prtect themselves frm the cld by wearing dwnhill-skiing clthes. On wet days, they wear special water-prf ver their shes.
Besides all these mentined abve, there is ne thing that has made winter riding mre ppular these years. In the past, cyclists need t clean and il their bicycle chains nce a week, which is n easy task. But ne bicycle stre wner tackled this weekly challenging task with an innvated cmplete chain cver. With bicycle chains cmpletely cvered, cyclists wuld need t d the trublesme wrk nce every six mnths. Despite this amazing inventin, the stre wner still advises cyclists t take a taxi r bus when it’s really snwing heavily, nt because cnditins are t hard fr bicycles, but because she is afraid that many bikers may lse cnfidence in themselves n snwy days f reduced discernibility, which is very dangerus.

Wildlife ppulatins arund the wrld are facing dramatic declines, accrding t new figures that have led envirnmental campaigners t call fr urgent actin t rescue the natural wrld. The 2022 Living Planet Index (LPI), prduced by the Zlgical Sciety f Lndn (ZSL), reveals that studied ppulatins f mammals, birds, reptiles (爬行动物) and fish have seen an average decline f 69 per cent since 1970, faster than previus predictins. The LPI tracked glbal bidiversity between 1970 and 2018, based n the mnitring f 31,821 ppulatins f 5230 vertebrate (脊椎动物) species. Mark Wright f WWF says the degree f decline is destructive and cntinues t wrsen. “We are nt seeing any really psitive signs that we are beginning t bend the curve f nature,” he says.
Freshwater vertebrates have been amng the hardest-hit ppulatins, with mnitred ppulatins shwing an average decline f 83 per cent since 1970. The Amazn pink river dlphin, fr example, has experienced a 65 per cent decline in its ppulatin between 1994 and 2016. Meanwhile, sme f the mst bidiverse regins f the wrld are seeing the steepest falls in wildlife, with the Caribbean and central and suth America seeing average wildlife ppulatin declined by 94 per cent since 1970. Habitat lss and reductin is the largest driver f wildlife lss in all regins arund the wrld, fllwed by species verexplitatin by hunting, fishing r paching (偷猎).
In December, gvernments frm arund the wrld will gather in Mntreal, Canada, fr the COP15 Bidiversity Framewrk, a much-delayed summit that aims t agree n a set f new targets intended t prevent the lss f animals, plants and habitats glbally by 2030. “This is a nce-in-a-decade pprtunity that’s cming up,” says Rbin Freeman f ZSL. He says it is vital that gvernments use the summit t agree n “meaningful, well measurable targets and gals”. “We need gvernments t take actin t ensure that thse gals deal with the cmplicated cmbined threats f climate change and bidiversity, in rder fr us t see a meaningful actin,” says Freeman. But sme researchers are critical f the LPI’s use f a headline figure f decline, warning it is easy t be misunderstd.
The findings dn’t mean all species r ppulatins wrldwide are in decline. In fact, apprximately half the ppulatins shw a stable r increasing trend, and half shw a declining trend. “I think a mre apprpriate and useful way t lk at it is t fcus n specific species r ppulatins,” says Hannah Ritchie at Our Wrld in Data. But Wright says the LPI is a useful tl that reflects the findings f ther bidiversity indicatrs. “All f thse shw they all scream there is smething ging really very badly wrng,” says Wright.

Shuld Hand Feeding Dlphins Be Encuraged?
Sme turist centers train Ind-Pacific bttlense dlphins t apprach beachside public sighting areas r bats by hand-feeding them small amunts f fish every day. Because hand-fed males aggressively attack each ther ver the fd, putting themselves and nearby humans in danger, turist centers fcus their hand feeding nly n female dlphins, says Valerie Senigaglia at Murdch University in Perth, Australia
But recent studies have shwn that nly 38% f the calves (崽) f hand-fed wild dlphins survive t three years f age, which is much lwer than the average 77% survival rate fr wild calves in general. T better understand why, Senigaglia and her clleagues evaluated the scial behavir f dlphins arund the Bunbury cast in Western Australia. In particular, they bserved the individual behavir and mvement f 35 dlphins, including 13 that had been hand-fed using a small bat. They regularly fllwed each dlphin fr perids lasting frm 20 minutes t 3 hurs fr tw years in a rw fr a ttal f 180 hurs.
They fund that hand-fed dlphins swam in relatively large grups, but mre readily brke away frm them t jin different nes. In general, they created weak ties with ther grup members. “Yu can feel lnely in a rm full f peple and it’s the same thing fr dlphins,” says Senigaglia. Free-swimming dlphins that are fed by hand becme less scially invlved with their peers. As a result, their calves may grw up lacking vital scial skills-which culd explain, at least in part, why they are twice as likely t die befre reaching adulthd as wild calves generally.
N wnder animal right activists are calling n the practice f hand-feeding dlphins t be stpped.
