Henrietta Swan Leavitt was brn n July 4, 1868, in Massachusetts. Little is knwn abut her private life. As a cllege student, she studied a number f subjects and fell in lve with astrnmy(天文学).
Leavitt never married and was cnsidered a serius wman with little time t waste n unimprtant aspects f life. In 1893, she began wrking at Harvard Cllege Observatry under the directin f astrnmer E.C．Pickering. He directed a grup f wmen, wh were called “cmputers”. I flded my paper and held it tightly in my hands, shilly-shallying abut whether t check the result in frnt f my classmates. Finally I decided I shuld face my fate bravely and unflded it. It was an “A”! I culd nt believe my eyes. Hw culd it be? It was the first time in my life that I had gt an “A”. I turned t lk at my teacher. Our eyes met. She ndded and gave me a big smile!
