We are all aware f the effect greenhuse gas emissins is having n ur planet and the effrts needed t tackle climate change. Mst f us are ding ur bit t minimize ur impact n the envirnment, but despite ur cllective effrt, are we ding enugh t achieve net zer by 2050?
Net zer means nt adding t the amunt f greenhuse gases in the atmsphere. Many cuntries are ding their bit by changing hw they generate and use pwer, thereby cutting carbn dixide utput. And they annunced what further steps they were ging t take at the recent COP26 summit in Glasgw.
In the UK, the gvernment has been setting ut its plans t achieve net zer by 2050. It's recently annunced an end date fr the sale f gas bilers (燃气锅炉),which are used fr heating hmes. The idea is t replace them with heat pumps. It’s ffering hmewners grants (拨款) f up t £5,000 t get them installed Anther initiative in the UK is a big push twards electric vehicles. There are t be financial incentives (激励) fr car manufacturers, and mre charging pints are t be installed in streets. And there’s t be a ban n the sale f new petrl and diesel (柴油) cars by 2030.
But nt all emissins can be reduced t zer, s thse remaining will have t be cmpensated fr, r ffset (抵消). One way t d this is t plant thusands f trees, which are gd at absrbing carbn dixide. The UK gvernment has pledged (保证) t plant 30,000 hectares f trees a year by 2025. There are ther ideas t, but what's certain is this will cst mney. The CBI's Tm Thackray tld the BBC that ''thse csts have t be weighed up against the cst f inactin (不作为).”
Whether the UK, r anyne else, reaches net zer remains t be seen. And there’s sme dubt abut hw this can be accurately measured anyway. But it's generally recgnized that a glbal effrt is needed t tackle climate change. Therefre, net zer targets nly make sense if every ther cuntry is mving in the same directin.
21.Which is NOT ne f UK gvernment’s plans t achieve net zer?

Researchers say a new electrical device placed in three paralyzed patients has helped them walk again. The lwer bdies f the three patients were left paralyzed after they suffered spinal (脊柱的) crd injuries. But a device implanted in the spinal crd was able t send electrical signals t the muscles t permit them t stand, walk and exercise.
Scientists have discvered that neurns—which receive and send signals fr muscle mvements—ften still wrk in injured patients with serius spinal crd injuries. Hwever, past research int spinal crd injuries has centered n the stimulatin f neurns. Nw in the latest experiment led by Gregire Curtine and Jcelyne Blch f the Swiss Federal Institute f Technlgy in Lausanne, three paralyzed men were implanted a new electrical device designed t cpy an actin f the brain, in which it sends signals t the spinal crd that result in muscle mvement. When the spinal crd receives the brain signals, it stimulates a cllectin f nerve cells that can activate different muscles.
The researchers reprted that all three patients wh gt the spinal crd implants were able t take their first steps within an hur after receiving them. Over the next six mnths, the patients regained the ability t take part in mre advanced walking activities, the study fund. They were als able t ride bicycles and swim in cmmunity settings.
Unlike ther attempts t help paralyzed patients walk by stimulating nerves thrugh the back f the spine, Curtine said that his team redesigned the devices s signals wuld enter the spine frm the sides. This methd permits mre direct targeting and activatin f spinal crd areas, he said.
The team then develped artificial intelligence (AI) systems linked t the device. The AI cntrls electrdes n the device t send signals t stimulate individual nerves that cntrl muscles needed fr walking and ther activities. Hwever, because the patients’ muscles were weak frm nt being used, they needed help with supprting their weight, the researchers said. It als tk sme time fr them t learn t wrk with the technlgy. Still, Blch said, “The mre they train, the mre they start lifting their muscles, the mre fluid it becmes.”
24.What can be inferred frm paragraph 2?
A.Curtine and Blch have fund that neurns in paralyzed patients still wrk.

A.By stimulating nerves thrugh the back f the spine.
B.By using the AI system.
C.By making signals enter the spine frm the sides.

26.Which can best describe Blch’s idea in the last paragraph?
A.Every garden has its weeds.
B.Put the cart (运货马车) befre the hrse.
C.It's hard t please all.
D.Practice makes perfect.
27.What is the purpse f this text?
A.T reprt the cnsequence f spinal crd injuries.
B.T intrduce the findings f a recent research.
C.T cmpare a recent research with ther previus researches.
D.T recmmend a treatment fr paralyzed patients.

Rain is vital t life n Earth. Hwever, rain isn’t just made f water anymre — it’s partly made f plastic.
Millins f tiny pieces f plastic, called micrplastics, are wandering arund Earth’s atmsphere and traveling acrss entire cntinents, accrding t a study published in the jurnal Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences n April 12. Anther study, published in the jurnal Science in June 2020, has revealed that every year mre than 1,000 tns f the particles — equivalent t ver 120 millin plastic bttles — fall in rain.
Micrplastics are plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter and cme frm a number f surces. Plastic bags and bttles released int the envirnment break dwn int smaller and smaller bits. Sme micrplastics are manufactured deliberately t prvide abrasin in a hst f prducts, such as tthpaste and cleansers, accrding t the Daily Mail. Anther majr surce is yur washing machine. When yu wash synthetic clthing, tiny micrfibers get flushed away with the wastewater. Even thugh the water is treated by a wastewater plant, the micrplastics remain, and they are released int the sea, accrding t American magazine Wired.
Plastic rain may remind peple f acid rain, but the frmer is far mre widespread and harder t deal with. The tiny particles, t small t be seen with the naked eye, are cllected by the wind frm the grund. They are s light that they stay in the air t be blwn arund the glbe. As they climb int the atmsphere, they are thught t act as nuclei arund which water vapr cndenses t frm cluds. Sme f the dust falls back t land in dry cnditins, while the rest cmes dwn as rain, accrding t the Daily Mail.
Micrplastics have been fund everywhere yu can imagine. Frm fish and frgs t mice and msquites, their bdies have been fund, n average, t cntain 40 pieces f micrplastic, reprted Daily Mail. As the tp f the fd chain, humans are expsed t micrplastics, t. “ We live n a ball inside a bubble,” micrplastic researcher Steve Allen at University f Strathelyde, Sctland, tld Wired. “There are n brders, there are n edges. Wrds can shw what’s ging n in ur heads — and prnuns, in particular, may shw where ur attentin is aimed. “Yu can be fcused n yurself fr many reasns,” says James Pennebaker, a psychlgist at the University f Texas. “Once yu appreciate that ‘I’ attracts attentin, yu see it’s a pwerful marker f a speaker’s psychlgical state.” Here are a few ways in which the use f this tiny prnun tells big truths.
Generally speaking, depressed peple ften use mre “I” wrds. This seems t have t d with hw lng-lasting sadness brings alng an inward fcus that translates int “I”, “me” and “my” usage. In fact, the pet wh veruses “I” in his petry may be at a higher risk f suicide.
Lwer-status peple rely n “I” in that “we” wrds dn’t just indicate “yu and me” – they can hld many ther meanings. On the ther hand, using “we” wrds lets the mre pwerful speaker decide what grup the listener falls int.
Interestingly, wmen pen up and say “I”, and abut furteen percent f wmen’s wrds are these less frmal persnal prnuns cmpared t nly twelve percent fr men. “This is a huge statistics difference,” Pennebaker says. Wmen generally cme acrss as mre self-reflective and self-aware than men.
As fr nline writing, after September 11, “I” talk plummeted, and an analysis f thusands f blgs shwed a big drp in “I” wrds after the attacks. The result was that the use f “we” wrds jumped at an even higher rate. “A temprary reactin t acute pain is t turn t thers. It’s nt a cincidence that disaster brings peple tgether,” Pennebaker pints ut.
Obviusly, peple wh lie tend t avid “I”. “When yu’re lying, yu almst distance yurself frm the wrds. In ther wrds, yu are nt wning yur statements.”
32.Fr what purpse is the use f prnuns being studied?
A.T evaluate the ptential effect n peple’s actins.
B.T advcate the use f prnuns in daily cnversatins.
C.T expse the relatinship between behavir and speech.
D.T examine the relatin between emtins and statements.
33.Cmpared with men, when wmen speak they_________.
A.seldm refer t themselves
B.tend t reflect n themselves
C.mainly talk abut persnal matters
D.chse mre frmal persnal prnuns
34.The underlined wrd “plummeted” in Paragraph 5 mst prbably means _________.
A.increased quicklyB.appeared suddenly
C.drpped sharplyD.disappeared ttally
35.What is the main message the text cnveys?
A.Cmmunicatin indicates status differences.
B.Cmmunicatin suggests mre than ne can see.
C.Cmmunicatin means discussin between equals.
D.Cmmunicatin cnnects different peple tgether.
