Sitting in the garden fr my friend’s birthday. I felt a buzz in my pcket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started ff: “Dear Mr Green, thank yu fr yur interest” and “the review prcess tk lnger than expected.” It ended with “We are srry t infrm yu …” and my visin blurred. The psitin—measuring sil quality in the Sahara Desert as part f an undergraduate research prgramme—had felt like the answer I had spent years lking fr.
I had put s much time and emtinal energy int applying, and I thught the rejectin meant the end f the rad fr my science career.
S I was shcked when, nt lng after the email, Prfessr Mary Devn, wh was running the prgramme, invited me t bserve the wrk being dne in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shcked—and verjyed—when she invited me t talk with her abut ptential prjects I culd pursue in her lab. What she prpsed didn’t seem as exciting as the riginal prject I had applied t, but I was ging t give it my all.
I fund myself wrking with a rbtics prfessr n techniques fr cllecting data frm the desert remtely. That prject, which I culd cmplete frm my sfa instead f in the burning heat f the desert, nt nly survived the lckdwn but wrked where traditinal methds didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest t pursue.
When I applied t graduate schl, I fund three prgrammes prmising t allw me t fllw my desired research directin. And I applied with the same anxius excitement as befre. When I was rejected frm ne that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective t keep it frm sending me int panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted int ne f the ther prgrammes I was als excited abut.
Rather than setting plans in stne, I’ve learned that smetimes I need t take the pprtunities that are ffered, even if they dn’t sund perfect at the time, and make the mst f them.

Gne are the days when humans cvered themselves with blankets t keep warm. It’s nw the time t put glaciers (冰川) under blankets t keep them cl because at the rate climate is changing, this seems like a gd idea t keep them frm melting (融化).
A ski resrt (滑雪胜地) in the Swiss Alps, Switzerland uses blankets t prtect the glacier frm the warm climate. Gian Darms, wh handles snw cnditins at the ski resrt tld abut this unique prcedure and said, “We lay the fleece (羊毛) ver the glacier like a natural prtective shield.” The blankets are being used t cver the tp f the 10,623-ft Munt Titlis whse glacier has already melted in the last few decades and it is expected t disappear cmpletely in the next 50 years due t glbal warming.
T diminish the effect f climate change, resrt emplyees have taken it upn themselves t prtect the glacier frm the heat and fr this prcess, they spend abut five t six weeks every summer cvering parts f the glacier with prtective plyester fleece. This helps t reflect the sun’s energy back int the atmsphere and prevent the glacier frm melting, while als preserving the already fallen snw n the glacier in the previus winter seasn. After the seasn passes, the emplyees remve the cating and use the cllected snw t fill in any gaps in the glacier’s surface.
This practice has been ging n fr a while and the amunt f the glaciers cvered has increased t almst 100,000 square meters nw. “We’ve been cvering mre and mre glaciers in the last few years. Almst 30,000 square meters mre this year alne. We will have t cver mre glaciers in reactin t the climate change,” said Darms.
The ski resrt’s actins shw the intense effect f climate change n glaciers which have been melting at rapid rates in the past few years. Many different resrts have als started cvering their glaciers because if there are n mre glaciers, then there is n mre business fr these ski resrts.
8. What des the Swiss ski resrt use blankets fr?
A. Keeping the glacier frm melting.B. Preventing wrkers frm feeling cld.

11. Frm which is the text mst prbably taken?
A. A travel brchure. B. An advertisement.

The scientists’ jb is t figure ut hw the wrld wrks, t “trture (拷问)” Nature t reveal her secrets, as the 17th century philspher Francis Bacn described it. But wh are these peple in the lab cats (r sprts jackets, r T-shirts and jeans) and hw d they wrk? It turns ut that there is a gd deal f mystery surrunding the mystery-slvers.
“One f the greatest mysteries is the questin f what it is abut human beings—brains, educatin, culture etc.—that makes them capable f ding science at all,” said Clin Allen, a cgnitive scientist at Indiana University.
Tw vital ingredients seem t be necessary t make a scientist: the curisity t seek ut mysteries and the creativity t slve them. “Scientists exhibit a heightened level f curisity.” reads a 2007 reprt n scientific creativity. “They g further and deeper int basic questins shwing a passin fr knwledge fr its wn sake. “Max Planck, ne f the fathers f quantum physics, nce said, the scientist “must have a vivid and intuitive imaginatin, fr new ideas are nt generated by deductin (推论), but by an artistically creative imaginatin.”
But thers disagree with this universal scientific mind. They believe that scientists have special abilities that set them apart. Discvering these abilities may be hard, Allen thinks, as many scientists will be reluctant t reveal them and wuld prefer t preserve the mystery f creativity, fearing that if it became an bject f study it wuld lse its magic.
But fr Allen, this is all part f a bigger questin f what lies behind anyne’s behavir. “We are nly just beginning t understand hw the characteristics f rganisms, including urselves, aren’t the fixed prducts f either genes r f envirnment/culture, but each f us is the prduct f a cntinual interactive prcess in which we help build the envirnments that in turn shape us,” he said.
“As lng as ur best technlgy fr seeing inside the brain requires subjects t lie nearly mtinless while surrunded by a giant magnet, we’re nly ging t make little prgress n these questins,” Allen said.
12. Why des the authr mentin Max Planck in paragraph 3?
A. T intrduce a famus scientist.
B. T stress the rle f creativity in science.
C. T cmpare different views n science.
D. T illustrate what is curisity in science.
13. What d Allen’s wrds in the last tw paragraphs suggest?
A. Human behavir is changeable and unpredictable.
B. We are passively influenced by ur genes and culture.
C. Our interactin with the envirnment makes us wh we are.
D. Current technlgy has revealed a lt abut human behavir.
14. What is Allen’s attitude t the current study n the human brain?
A. Cautius. B. Indifferent.C. Apprving. D. Pessimistic.
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Wh Are The Mystery-slvers B. Scientists Are Nt Brn But Made
C. Great Mystery: What Makes A Scientist D. Slving Mysteries: Inside A Scientist’s Mind
