Ever wndered if dgs can learn new wrds? Yes, say researchers as they have fund that talented dgs may have the ability t grasp new wrds after hearing them nly fur times.
While previus evidence seems t shw that mst dgs d nt learn wrds, unless eventually very well trained, a few individuals have shwn sme extrardinary abilities, accrding t a study published in the jurnal ScientificReprts.
“We wanted t knw under which cnditins the gifted dgs may learn nvel wrds，” said researcher Claudia Fugazza frm the Eötvös Lránd University in Hungary. Fr the study，the team invlved tw gifted dgs, Whisky and Vicky Nina. The team expsed the dgs t the new wrds in tw different cnditins.
In the exclusin­based task, presented with seven knwn tys and ne new ty, the dgs were able t select the new ty when presented with a new name. Researchers say this prves that dgs can chse by exclusin when faced with a new wrd, they selected the nly ty which did nt have a knwn name.
Hwever, this was nt the way they wuld learn the name f the ty. In fact, when they were presented with ne mre equally new name t test their ability t recgnize the ty by its name, the dgs gt ttally cnfused and failed.
The ther cnditin, the scial ne, where the dgs played with their wners wh prnunced the name f the ty while playing with the dg, prved t be the successful way t learn the name f the ty, even after hearing it nly 4 times. “The rapid learning that we bserved seems t equal children's ability t learn many new wrds at a fast rate arund the age f 18 mnths，” Fugazza says. “But we d nt knw whether the learning mechanisms (机制) behind this learning are the same fr humans and dgs.”
T test whether mst dgs wuld learn wrds this way, 20 ther dgs were tested in the same cnditin, but nne f them shwed any evidence f learning the ty names, cnfirming that the ability t learn wrds rapidly in the absence f frmal training is very rare and is nly present in a few gifted dgs.
