Abut 20 years ag, Daniel Hffman, a classically trained vilinist met a yung musician playing in the twn square in Marrakech, an ancient city in Mrcc. They cmmunicated in the little French they bth knew, but their main cmmn language was music. On the back f a mtrbike f the fellw vilinist, Hffman weaved thrugh the back streets f the city and then learned his first lessns in Andalusian music, the classical music f Nrth Africa.
That experience gave birth t an idea: What wuld it be like t try t learn hw t play different vilin styles arund the wrld in just ne week? Oh, yes, and at the end f that week, play a cncert. He even gt a name fr the cncept “musical extreme sprts”.
It tk him almst tw decades t launch that dream with a friend, wh intrduced him t the wnders f Kickstarter, a funding platfrm fr creative prjects. Up t nw, the dream has taken the frm f a new dcumentary currently airing n American public televisin statins called “Otherwise, It’s Just Firewd.”
In the dcumentary, Hffman travels t Cunty Clare, Ireland, where he takes lessns with James Kelly, a master Irish vilin player, fr less than a week and then perfrms tgether with him in frnt f an audience, many f whm are star Irish musicians.
The film is what Hffman hpes will be the first f an eventual series f shrt dcumentaries, shwing him learning t play the vilin in a variety f styles, including the flk music f suth India, Sweden, Greece, Rmania, and West Virginia.
That wuld add t his extensive repertire (全部曲目), which already includes Balkan, Middle Eastern, and Turkish styles. “The big jke is what’s the difference between the fiddle and the vilin? It’s the persn wh plays it,” says Niall Keegan, a traditinal flute player. “It’s the music yu make n it that makes it Irish r English r French r classical r jazz r whatever else. It’s hw we imagine it and hw we create thrugh it that make it and give it character.”
“Otherwise, it’s just firewd,” he says, wrds that became the film’s title.

    The Rise f Vice Technlgy
Vice technlgy has cme a lng way. Just a few years ag, it wuld have been unusable. But nw, thse wh fllw the technlgy knw that it has gt cnsiderably better.
Writing with yur vice raises several interesting questins. Hw difficult is it actually? Human speech invlves a lt mre starting and stpping with errrs and the need fr repairing brken sentences than yu may think. Even gifted speakers make mistakes. T turn the spken wrd int reasnable writing requires lts f planning. Yu’ll need sme kinds f ntes r ther rganisers t make it wrk.
Anther questin turning speech int writing raises is the style. Hw wuld writing make the change that peple speak their writing rather than type? Chances are that it wuld cme up with many mre shrt sentences and mre cncrete language, which is gd. It wuld prbably als rely n prepared phrases a lt mre ften, which is nt available when yu are speaking quickly.
T cnfirm this, a clumn was nt written, but dictated (听写). It was cmpsed frm brief ntes written dwn fr structure nly, and it was edited fr length, with all f the riginal errrs kept in. Here were the results. The first was that the literal accuracy was extremely high. There weren’t many cases where the sftware had heard ne wrd incrrectly and written dwn anther. But the ther result was that the readability f this clumn was rather bad. Obviusly, the blame is nt with the technlgy at all, which turns ut t be rather gd. Speaking int writing relies n a better human brain than the ne we currently pssess. Writing is hard. There’s a reasn it can’t be dne at the speed f speech, in real time.
T clarify the matter, this time paragraph breaks were added after the whle writing. Punctuatins (标点) had t be spken alud, and after a full stp, the first wrd in the new sentence was capitalized autmatically. Sme minr punctuatin marks were added t make it clearer. T imprve accuracy, peple “trained” the sftware befrehand, reading a prewritten passage alud. Actually it turns ut t be mre effective. All f these ensure the satisfactry cmpletin f turning speech int writing.
Language is the mst imprtant tl fr human interactin, and vice is ne beautiful part f language. With the maturity f mdern technlgy, it has given birth t a great change in the human-cmputer vice interactin.
    28. Accrding t the passage, which helps t turn speech int writing in terms f style?
    A. There is careful planning in advance.
    B. Errrs and brken sentences are avided.
    C. Peple type wrds as fast as they say them.
    D. The writing cntains mre prepared phrases.
    29. T achieve better results, the authr mentins sme changes fr ______.
    A. prcessing errrs in a clumn B. adding minr punctuatin marks
    C. increasing the number f brief ntes D. integrating shrt paragraphs in writing
    30. The authr suggests that ______.
    A. human brains are respnsible fr pr dictated writing
    B. writing with vice prmises t imprve the quality f writing
    C. writing is an unnatural act that can hardly be learned and imprved
    D. technlgy has a lng way t g in the human-cmputer vice interactin
    31. What is the passage mainly abut?
    A. Why peple fully intend t turn speech int writing.
    B. What rle vice technlgy plays in imprving readability.
    C. Where the human-cmputer vice interactin is at an advantage.
    D. Hw vice technlgy enables the change frm speech int writing.
    D
Cmmunities acrss the wrld are starting t ban facial recgnitin technlgies. The effrts are well intentined, but banning facial recgnitin is the wrng way t fight against mdern surveillance (监视). Generally, mdern mass surveillance has three brad cmpnents: identificatin, crrelatin and discriminatin.
Facial recgnitin is a technlgy that can be used t identify peple withut their cnsent. Once we are identified, the data abut wh we are and what we are ding can be crrelated with ther data. This might be mvement data, which can be used t “fllw” us as we mve thrughut ur day. It can be purchasing data, Internet brwsing data, r data abut wh we talk t via email r text. It might be data abut ur incme, ethnicity, lifestyle, prfessin and interests. There is an entire industry f data brkers wh make a living by selling ur data withut ur cnsent.
It’s nt just that they knw wh we are; it’s that they crrelate what they knw abut us t create prfiles abut wh we are and what ur interests are. The whle purpse f this prcess is fr cmpanies t treat individuals differently. We are shwn different ads n the Internet and receive different ffers fr credit cards. In the future, we might be treated differently when we walk int a stre, just as we currently are when we visit websites.
It desn’t matter which technlgy is used t identify peple. What’s imprtant is that we can be cnsistently identified ver time. We might be cmpletely annymus (匿名的) in a system that uses unique ckies t track us as we brwse the Internet, but the same prcess f crrelatin and discriminatin still ccurs.
Regulating this system means addressing all three steps f the prcess. A ban n facial recgnitin wn’t make any difference. The prblem is that we are being identified withut ur knwledge r cnsent, and sciety needs rules abut when that is permissible.
Similarly, we need rules abut hw ur data can be cmbined with ther data, and then bught and sld withut ur knwledge r cnsent. The data brker industry is almst entirely unregulated nw. Reasnable laws wuld prevent the wrst f their abuses.
Finally, we need better rules abut when and hw it is permissible fr cmpanies t discriminate. Discriminatin based n prtected characteristics like race and gender is already illegal, but thse rules are ineffectual against the current technlgies f surveillance and cntrl. When peple can be identified and their data crrelated at a speed and scale previusly unseen, we need new rules.
Tday, facial recgnitin technlgies are receiving the frce f the tech backlash (抵制), but fcusing n them misses the pint. We need t have a serius cnversatin abut all the technlgies f identificatin, crrelatin and discriminatin, and decide hw much we want t be spied n and what srts f influence we want them t have ver ur lives.
    32. Accrding t Para 2, with facial recgnitin, ______.
    A. ne’s lifestyle changes greatly B. ne’s email cntent is disclsed
    C. ne’s prfiles are updated in time D. ne’s persnal infrmatin is released
    33. We can learn frm the passage that ______.
    A. discriminatin based n new tech surveillance is illegal
    B. different brwsing data bring in different advertisements
    C. using mbiles annymusly keeps us frm being crrelated
    D. data brkers cntrl the current technlgies f surveillance
    34. The authr wrte this passage t ______.
    A. call fr banning facial recgnitin technlgies
    B. advcate the urgent need fr changes in related laws
    C. infrm readers f the disadvantages f facial recgnitin
    D. evaluate three brad cmpnents in mdern mass surveillance

Is there a link between scial media and depressin? D scial media have a negative impact n yur mental health? It’s cmplicated.
In a recent study, the investigatrs cmpared scial media use and depressin between teens. 35 Specifically, fr every hur per day that ne teen spent n scial media mre than her peers, she likely had a 0.64-pint higher depressin scre.
A different study published in 2018 identified five distinct types f scial media users. The finding was that “prblematic scial media use” was ne f the main themes fr peple whse mental health was affected by scial media. Yu can have alchl in yur life withut it being a prblem, r yur alchl use may becme prblematic. 36
There’s ne imprtant thing t remember abut survey research—just because tw things happen tgether, it’s nt necessarily true that ne causes the ther. 37 Fr all we knw, it culd be that peple wh are already mre depressed chse t spend mre time n scial media.
38 If yu think that we shuldn’t paint scial media with ne brad brush, yu’re n the right track. On the ne hand, participants ften described scial media as a valuable way t cpe with stress. On the ther hand, cyberbullying via scial media was als a cmmn experience fr participants. Sme als said that cnstantly checking their wn scial media prfile was stressful.
It’s certainly pssible that experiences like cyberbullying, cmparing yurself t idealized images, and cnstantly mnitring yur prfile, are bad fr yur md. It’s als true fr many that scial media ffer cmmunity supprt and psitive messages. Given the incnclusive research, it’s safe t say that at least we shuldn’t write ff scial media altgether. 39 Anyway, yu cannt use it as a crutch fr cping with ther stressrs and mental health prblems.
    A. It’s the same with scial media.
    B. Scial media can be a duble-edged swrd.
    C. Peple get mre pininated abut the ptential prblems f scial media.
    D. They fund that thse wh used scial media mre had higher depressin scres.
    E. They reviewed all existing research and fund that there were bth benefits and drawbacks.
    F. The key t benefiting frm scial media may lie in using it in mderatin and staying scially cnnected.
    G. Fr example, just because higher scial media use c-ccurs with higher levels f depressin desn’t mean scial media use causes depressin.

The increase in nline educatin has allwed a new type f teacher t emerge—an artificial ne. But just hw accepting students are f an artificial instructr remains t be seen. That’s why researchers at the University f Central Flrida’s Nichlsn Schl f Cmmunicatin and Media are wrking t examine student perceptins f AI-based teachers. Sme f their findings, published recently in the Internatinal Jurnal f Human-Cmputer Interactin, indicate that fr students t accept an AI teaching assistant, it needs t be effective and easy t talk t.
Accrding t Jihyun Kim, the lead authr f the study, the hpe is that by understanding hw students relate t AI-teachers, engineers and cmputer scientists can design them t easily integrate int the educatin experience.
“T use machine teachers effectively, we need t understand students’ views n machine teachers, their learning experiences with them and mre,” Kim says. “This line f research is needed t design effective machine teachers that can actually facilitate psitive learning experiences.”
AI teaching assistants can help ease a teacher’s wrklad, such as by respnding t cmmnly asked questins by students. These questins, which ften appear each semester and becme numerus in nline classes with hundreds f students, can becme a large task fr a teacher. The quick delivery f answers als helps students.
An example f an AI teaching assistant is ne named Jill Watsn that was created by a researcher at the Gergia Institute f Technlgy. Jill was fed the thusands f questins and answers cmmnly asked in the researcher’s nline class that he’d taught ver the years. With sme additinal learning and adjustments, Jill was eventually able t answer the students’ cmmnly asked questins accurately withut any human assistance as if she was ne f the researcher’s human teaching assistants.
“I hpe ur research findings help us find an effective way t incrprate AI agents int educatin,” Kim says. “By adpting an AI agent as an assistant fr a simple and repetitive task, teachers wuld be able t have mre things scheduled such as meeting with students and develping teaching strategies.”
    40. What kind f AI teaching assistants can students easily accept?
    41. What d researchers need t d t design effective AI teaching assistants?
    42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
With the help f AI-based teaching assistants, human teachers can nt nly be relieved frm heavy wrk but als have mre time t answer cmmnly asked questins by students.
    43. Explain hw AI technlgy can be used in a different field in ur life. (abut 40 wrds)

    Dear Jim,
Thanks fr yur suggestin n using AI t finish the first draft f ur paper. But after further cnsideratin, I’m afraid it’s nt a wise idea.
Firstly, it ges against the purpse f prject-based learning, which is t cultivate critical thinking and teamwrk. Mrever, AI is unlikely t accurately present ur ideas, because it hasn’t “gt invlved in” ur prject.
S, I suggest we write the paper urselves. We can start by brainstrming tgether t create an utline after generating sme riginal and creative ideas. Then we can wrk independently n different parts, and finally wrk tgether t finalize ur paper. I believe we can d a better jb than AI.
Hpe yu can understand. Expecting ur distinctive draft.
