Massive heat waves and drughts are already becming a threat t farmers. Over the next three decades, Califrnia’s San Jaquin Valley alne culd lse up t 535,000 acres f farmland as a result f the shrtage f water supplies.
Jennifer Brphy, an assistant prfessr f biengineering at Stanfrd, is wrking n methds she hpes will be used t change cmmercial plant species s they can survive severe cnditins. She is develping new genetic engineering techniques that can help plants grw in a variety f different cnditins. By changing the genme (基因组) f bth cmmercial crps and sil bacteria, she thinks it may be pssible t help plants survive drughts.
T make plants respnd t extreme climate, Brphy is building what she calls “genetic circuits (基因回路).” In additin t changing the genes within plant cells, this methd als changes hw and when thse genes are activated (激活). If the plant senses a specific sugar, it can express ne prtein; if it senses anther signal, it’ll express a different prtein, kicking ff an entirely separate chain f events. If bth signals are there, the plant may be able t express smething else entirely. “Using circuits, yu can have plants respnd in new ways t all these different inputs,” she says.
Humans can learn frm the weather frecast whether it’s ging t be really ht r really dry in the next cuple f weeks s that we can plan accrdingly. “A plant desn’t necessarily knw what’s cming. It just knws if it’s ht r mild right nw,” says Brphy. This can lead t prblems when weather becmes unstable. A plant that usually flwers in spring may flwer in winter if there are a few unseasnably warm days. When temperatures fall again, the flwers die and ruin a year f crps. “It’d be great t be able t cmmunicate with plants t tell them, ‘hey, yu shuld wait n that flwering,’” she adds.
Cntrlling plants’ grwth at this level is an exciting prspect, but actually putting it int practice is alng way ff. At the mment, Brphy is testing the cncept in the lab using a small weedy plant called Arabidpsis, trying t figure ut hw t activate certain genes n cmmand.
32. What prblem are farmers faced with accrding t the text?
A. The shrtage f strng labur frce.
B. The water pllutin caused by factries.
C. The pressure f feeding a grwing ppulatin.
D. The harmful effect f climate change n farming.
33. What is the expected advantage f “genetic circuits”?
A. Increasing farmland.B. Cntrlling plants’ grwth.
C. Telling the weather in advance.D. Prtecting plants frm extreme weather.
34. What d we knw abut Brphy’s research?
A. It is still in its early stages.B. It has been put int practice.
C. It has led t serius prblems.D. It is funded by the gvernment.
35. What’s the text mainly abut?
A. A scientific breakthrugh in biengineering.
B. A victrius battle against glbal warming.
C. A new type f plant resistant t heat waves.
D. A way t help crps survive severe cnditins.
D 33. B 34. A 35. D
根据第一段中“Massive heat waves and drughts are already becming a threat t farmers. Over the next three decades, Califrnia’s San Jaquin Valley alne culd lse up t 535,000 acres f farmland as a result f the shrtage f water supplies.(大规模的热浪和干旱已经对农民构成了威胁。在接下来的30年里,由于水资源短缺,仅加州的圣华金山谷就可能失去多达53.5万英亩的农田。)”可知,农民们面临的问题是气候变化对农业的有害影响。故选D。
2. 推理判断题。根据Brphy说的话,第三段中的“Using circuits, yu can have plants respnd in new ways t all these different inputs(使用基因回路,可以让植物以新的方式对所有不同的输入作出反应)”和第四段“It’d be great t be able t cmmunicate with plants t tell them, ‘hey, yu shuld wait n that flwering,’(如果能与植物交流,告诉它们,‘嘿,你应该等待开花)”可知,Brphy提出的“基因回路”力求能和植物交流,告诉它们应该等待开花时节。
根据最后一段中的“Cntrlling plants’ grwth at this level is an exciting prspect, but actually putting it int practice is a lng way ff. 【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了遇到棘手的问题时的应对方法,要足智多谋,随机应变。
【36题详解】
根据前句“Being resurceful means finding smart and creative ways t slve a prblem, using whatever resurces yu have at the time. (足智多谋意味着找到聪明和创造性的方法来解决问题,利用你当时拥有的任何资源。)”和后句“They can als be anything else that’s useful, such as infrmatin, advice r yur wn experience. (它们也可以是任何有用的东西,比如信息、建议或你自己的经历。)”中的als可知,空处和下文为并列关系,也是在列举可以利用的资源可能是什么。所以选择项F“These may be famus mtts that always inspire us t mve n. (这些可能是著名的座右铭,总是激励我们继续前进。)”符合上下文语境。故选F。
【37题详解】
挖空处在段首,有可能是段落的主旨句。而后面“…it can help t build ur cnfidence, help us feel mre independent, and feel better abut making decisins.(它可以帮助我们建立信心,帮助我们感到更独立,在做决定时感觉更好)”及“Being resurceful may nt help yu avid prblems, but thinking creatively abut hw yu can deal with them will make yu feel less stressed and mre prepared next time.(足智多谋或许不能帮助你避免问题,但创造性地思考如何处理问题会让你感觉压力更小,下次准备更充分)”主要说的是“being resurceful”带来的好处, E选项意思就是resurcefulness 能带来很多好处。故选E。
该段首句说的是“being resurceful”会对你有好处,前面两句“…it can help t build ur cnfidence, help us feel mre independent, and feel better abut making decisins.(...它可以帮助我们建立信心,帮助我们感到更独立,在做决定时感觉更好)”及“Being resurceful may nt help yu avid prblems, but thinking creatively abut hw yu can deal with them will make yu feel less stressed and mre prepared next time.(足智多谋或许不能帮助你避免问题,但创造性地思考如何处理问题会让你感觉压力更小,下次准备更充分)”具体列举了“being resurceful”带来的好处,A选项:你还能知道你所擅长的是什么,对自己更加了解,也契合下一句“This can bst self-esteem, that is, hw yu feel abut yurself.这能提高自尊心。这是又一个好处,A项最符合语境。故选A。
上一句“Next, think up as many slutins t the prblem as yu can.(接下来,想出尽可能多的方法来解决问题)”讲的是“尽可能多地想出一些解决措施”,G选项:然后衡量它们的好坏,选出最佳的一个,其中them指代上一句slutins,G项填到此处最合适。故选G。
上一句“And remember, if yu have a tricky prblem that yu’re unable t slve, then ask a trusted adult fr help.(记住,如果你有一个棘手的问题,你无法解决,然后向一个值得信任的成年人寻求帮助)”表示自己实在解决不了,你还可以求助其他人,D选项意为“没有人是被期望要独自解决所有问题的”,与上文意义一致。故填D。
