The crested ibis is an elegant bird with a red face and claws. During the breeding(繁殖)seasn yu may ntice its white feather turning grey. The clr change is due t a kind f black pwdery substance(物质)the bird gives ut at this special time.
Hwever, its ppulatin arund the wrld drpped rapidly in the 1960s due t the lss f living areas and the use f pesticides and fertilizers. Their lw breeding ability and weak ability against natural enemies further pushed them t the brink f dying ut.
Back in the 1960s and 1970s, scientists thught the chances f bringing back the bird were nt great. In 1963, Russia annunced the bird’s dying ut in the cuntry and it hasn’t been seen n the Krean Peninsula since 1979.
There were nly five wild crested ibises left in Japan in 1980. A captive(圈养的)breeding prgram was set up t increase the number f the grup, but in 2003, Kin, Japan’s last crested ibis brn in the wild, died. The nly hpe f saving the bird was left t China.
The crested ibis hadn’t been recrded in China since 1964. A grup f five scientists still decided t find the bird’s histrical living areas in 1978. Finally, in May 1981, a farmer in Yangxian Cunty, Shaanxi said he had seen the bird and led the grup t find the last seven crested ibises in the cunty.
Shrtly after this exciting discvery, a special grup was set up t prtect the bird. The lcal gvernment als stpped hunting, the use f fertilizers and pesticides, and land clearing near their living areas, which enabled the family f the crested ibis t enlarge. Accrding t the incmplete data, its number in China in 2020 increased t abut 4,400, with 4,100 lcated in Shaanxi, ne f their biggest living areas. “We tend t fcus n CO2 and ther greenhuse gases, but frests can nt nly keep CO2,” said Debrah Lawrence, an envirnmental scientist at the University f Virginia. “It’s time t think abut what else frests are ding fr us besides keeping CO2.”
“Researchers already knw that frests influence their lcal climates thrugh varius chemical prcesses. Trees let ut water vapr thrugh their leaves and, like human sweating, this cls the trees and the things arund them. But n a glbal scale, it isn’t clear hw the ther cling wrks cmpared with the cling prvided by frests’ ability f keeping CO2,” Lawrence said.
