A new study finds trpical (热带的) frests help cl the average glbal temperature by mre than 1℃. “The effect is largely frm frests’ ability t stckpile CO2. But arund ne third f that trpical cling effect cmes frm several ther prcesses, such as the letting-ut f water vapr (水蒸气),” researchers reprted n March 24 in Frntiers in Frests and Glbal Change.
“We tend t fcus n CO2 and ther greenhuse gases, but frests can nt nly keep CO2,” said Debrah Lawrence, an envirnmental scientist at the University f Virginia. “It’s time t think abut what else frests are ding fr us besides keeping CO2.”
“Researchers already knw that frests influence their lcal climates thrugh varius chemical prcesses. Trees let ut water vapr thrugh their leaves and, like human sweating, this cls the trees and the things arund them. But n a glbal scale, it isn’t clear hw the ther cling wrks cmpared with the cling prvided by frests’ ability f keeping CO2,” Lawrence said.
S she and her clleagues studied hw ver-cutting wuld affect glbal temperatures, using data gathered frm ther studies. Fr example, the researchers used data t decide hw much the letting-ut f CO2 stred by thse frests wuld warm the glbal temperature. They then cmpared thse results with ther studies’ results f hw much the lss f ther aspects f frests.
The researchers fund that in frests at latitudes (纬度) frm arund 50°S f the equatr t 50°N, the primary way that frests influenced the glbal average temperature was thrugh CO2 stre. But ther cling factrs still played large rles.
