    Different gestures (手势)mean different things in different cuntries. Smetimes a gesture that is plite in ne cuntry is nt plite in anther and shuld nt be used. Different meanings f gestures can als cause prblems in understanding what anther persn is trying t say. A gesture that many peple d nt understand is ne that uses the thumb. Mst westerners will smetimes shw that they like smething by hlding ut a clsed hand with the thumb lifting in the air. This is called give smene r smething “the thumbs up". Often, nly ne thumb is used, s it shuld be “the thumb up”.
    The usual explanatin (解释)fr the rigin f this gesture is nt really crrect. It says that in ancient Rman times, when peple were pleased with the way a gladiatr (角斗士)had fught, they shwed their thumbs up. When they were nt pleased, they gave the thumbs dwn. When a gladiatr was given the thumbs up, the emperr allwed him t live. When a gladiatr was given the thumbs dwn, the emperr rdered him t be killed.
    The truth is, hwever, it was translated int a wrng meaning by mistake. If peple wanted t save the gladiatr they put ut their hands and hid their thumbs in their hands. If they wanted the gladiatr t die, they pinted their thumbs straight at him.
