I started in the prfessin f jurnalism in an age f typewriters and telex machines. The technlgy is ttally different nw but the principles f hnest jurnalism remain the same.
My first jb was at the Bradfrd Telegraph and Argus (T&A). The news editr, Dn Retaught me hw t get the balance between infrmatin and entertainment and t respect the readers, wh culd always write in t cmplain.
Later, I went t Lndn Reuters as a trainee, where we had a slang expressin ——GSIT—which meant “gd stry, if true”. And it was ur jb t make sure the stries were true. At Reuters, fur senir editr s drilled int us that we were the witnesses f the wrld. Accuracy and balance were t jurnalists what basic hygiene was t medics. S as ne f very few wmen in the newsrm, I never felt that my gender held me back. Instead, I realised that cmpetence “being a gd peratr”—was all that mattered.
I increasingly learnt subtle things abut the craft f jurnalism. As essential as it was t be prepared, it was vital t keep an pen mind because yu never knew what yu wuld find when yu went ut int the field. What yu fund was what yu had t reprt, nt what yu imagined r wanted t be true. Once, I went t Stavanger in Nrway with a fixed idea in my head: American il wrkers had cme t the city t take advantage f the Nrth Sea il bm. I was cnvinced that they wuld end up raising hell in the area, and, befre leaving, sld the stry t my editrs with that angle. In reality, it turned ut t be the ther way rund. I had t recast my planned stry. It was a gd lessn fr me.
In jurnalism, yu never knw wh yur readers are ging t be, and yu cannt guess their respnse. Hw they respnd is their right. Yu state the facts and leave them t draw their wn cnclusins. Truth can be bitter. But truth can't be replaced. “Beauty is truth, truth beauty that is all yu knw n earth, and all yu need t knw,” as the pet Keats put it, s beautifully truthfully.

A. be very sensitive t unexpected events
B. be prepared befre cvering an event
C. maintain cmmunicatin with the editrs
D. nt judge befre actually lking int it
27. Accrding t the authr, what is the mst imprtant principle in jurnalism?
