It was decades ag, but it's still ne f the mst memrable cnversatins f my life. On a lng, slw train rattling nrth, with nthing t d but watch the rain, the guy sitting ppsite began trying t talk t me. Like mst yung wmen wh have learned the hard way t be cautius f strangers, I reacted cldly. But curisity tk ver when he said that he was just bred, and liked talking.
S that's what we did, fr hurs and hurs, since he turned ut t be very talkative. When the train eventually pulled in, we didn't swap numbers—it was a cnversatin strictly f its time—but I still think abut it ccasinally n lng, bring jurneys, befre getting a phne ut and scrlling silently like everyne else. Rarely can a persn cheerfully break the scial tab(禁忌)abut talking t strangers withut any trace f ill intentin but life wuld be mre interesting if mre f us knew hw t d it
And that's why I feel it ridiculus abut a campaign launched this week t heal bitter natinal divides by encuraging Britns t talk t each ther. Obviusly, it takes mre than a small talk ver garden fences t unite a divided natin nw. Mre peple live alne than they did a generatin ag, and we scialise increasingly thrugh screens instead f bthering t call. In reality, scial media platfrms designed t bring peple tgether have unknwingly fueled the divisin.
It is true that the "tube chat" campaign f a few years back failed in its attempt t make Lndners talk t each ther n public transprt. But even city residents wh wuld nrmally die rather than make eye cntact with strangers still happily jin the large crwds f peple by the Thames fr the New Year's Eve firewrks. They wuld get a far better view at hme n TV—it's nt really abut the firewrks but being part f scial engagement.
There's n guarantee that this latest attempt t recnnect will succeed, but I hpe that my temprary train friend then is still talking, wherever he is nw.
12. What led the authr t start the talk with the guy n the train?
A. Her grwing interest in cmmunicatin.
B. Her typical easyging persnality
C. Her habit f chatting with strangers.
D. The intentin f the train jurney.
13. What has made talking t strangers a scial tab amng the Britns?
A. A lack f basic cmmunicating skills.
B. The absence f cmmn tpics.
C. The cncern fr persnal safety.
D. The addictin t scial media
14. Hw des technlgy affect peple's mutual cnnectin?
A. It is bringing peple tgether in a larger sense.
B. It is psitively helping break the natinal bundaries.
C. It has made peple mre divided than cnnected.
D. It is the key driving frce f remving divisins.
15. What des the highly-attended firewrk shw indicate?
A. Tube chat campaign can never make it.
B. TV prgrams at hme are nt appealing.
C. The charm f the firewrks is hard t resist.
