After Wrld War II, Beiwei Kaishu was widely used in Hng Kng, partly because it is quite utstanding, even frm far distances. It seems t be a practical chice fr lcal businessmen. What sets Beiwei Kaishu apart frm ther Chinese writing styles is its unequal cnstructin, clear lines and unexpected angles—smething that makes it energetic.
But with the cming f cmputer typefaces and LED signs, signs written in the style were disappearing frm Hng Kng. “It’s almst extinet,” says Chan, “Hng Kng’s urban landscape has als changed. Peple pull clwn ld buildings and, f curse, the shps, as well.” As a cnsequence, few designers wrking tday are aware f the Beiwei Kaishu style.
In 2016, Chan asked Wng Gk Leng, a master f calligraphy in Hng Kng, t teach him t write in the Beiwei Kaishu style. Chan then started the prcess f digitizing the characters.
