She even gt a pay cut frm the schl. What’s wrse, at this time, she suffered frm cancer. But she stuck at it.
Karikó gt t knw anther UPenn scientist, Drew Weissman in the late 1990s while phtcpying research papers. He was hping t find a way t create a vaccine fr a disease knwn as HIV. The tw began talking and sn decided t wrk tgether.
One f the biggest prblems in using mRNA as a medicine was that the human bdy saw mRNA as an enemy and fught it ff. Tgether, they came up with an apprach t treating mRNA.In 2005, they published their key discvery: mRNA culd be changed and delivered effectively int the bdy t activate (激活) the bdy’s prtective immune system. It’s knwn that reading is gd fr a child’s vcabulary and literacy skills, teaching them math r science cncepts and helping them learn histry. Apart frm thse, reading has anther benefit. Have yu read a stry and felt tears well up because f a character’s suffering? If s, that is because yu have empathy (共鸣) fr the character — and empathy can be learned thrugh varius fictins. “It’s a magic eye that sees int ther peple’s hearts,” explains authr Cressida Cwell.
Research shws that human brains react differently t stries and facts. “Many mre areas f yur brain light up when yu’re enjying a stry,” explains Miranda McKearney frm EmpathyLab, an rganizatin that builds empathy thrugh reading. “Yur brain thinks yu are in the stry ... This means yu experience the characters’ thughts as if they are real.”
Empathy helps yu t read peple’s emtins and wrk ut the best way t respnd. This skill, called emtinal intelligence, can make it easier t cmmunicate and cnnect with peple. Research has shwn that building empathy can lead t greater kindness and tlerance. One study fund that children wh read the Harry Ptter nvels — which tell stries abut humans fighting against the evil — were less likely t behave unfairly twards pwerless grups including refugees (难民).
This thery has been put int practice by St Michael’s Primary Schl. After reading The By at the Back f the Class — a stry abut a by wh is a refugee escaping frm the war — students in that schl were inspired t d a 10-mile walk fr the nn-prfit rganizatin Refugee Actin. Their empathy als spurred them t raise £1,000 fr peple wh were frced t leave their hmes because f war.
Reading encurages children t empathise with thers, which culd ptentially lead t several beneficial learning utcmes, new research suggests. Fr sciety t develp, creative, cmmunicative and empathetic individuals really matter.

    B. Becme empathetic t thers.
    C. Put themselves in thers’ shes.

Since the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed in 1973, it has helped hundreds f species avid extinctin in the United States. The strng cnservatin plicy has been used as a mdel in ther cuntries. But it’s nt as successful as it culd be, a new study finds.
Researchers have discvered mst species are nt being prtected until their numbers have becme s lw that their chance f recvery is slim.
“The ESA is an incredibly pwerful, ambitius law fr prtecting ur endangered wildlife. Yet, fr decades, the agency primarily respnsible fr perating the ESA — the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) — has been starved f resurces,” lead authr Erich Eberhard says.
“As a result, we are very slw t give species the prtectin that they deserve. We typically wait until species are extremely rare and thus at extreme risk f extinctin, and then, when a species is finally listed, the USFWS is straining its resurces t try t recver it.”
In 1993, a study fund that few species received prtectin under the ESA until their ppulatins became very small. Fr the new study, researchers repeated the methds used in the earlier research t see whether prtectins have becme better since the prblem was first nted. They als lked at trends in “wait times” — the amunt f time between when a species is identified as ptentially needing prtectin and when it actually receives prtectin under the ESA.
“Our analysis suggests that, in the nearly 30 years since attentin was first brught t this prblem, we have nt becme mre active in prtecting endangered species,” says Eberhard.
The researchers fund that the ppulatin sizes f species when they first became prtected under the ESA are nt statistically different frm thse in the 1993 study. They als discvered that there are lng wait times between when a species is identified as likely needing prtectin and when they actually receive them.
“I can say that ur study paints the current state f the ESA as a bit f cautinary (告诫的) tale fr the strng cnservatin plicy,” says Eberhard.
    32. What prblem des the USFWS have prtecting endangered species?
    A. It takes ineffective measures.B. It is lacking in resurces.
    C. It can’t get timely infrmatin.D. It is an irrespnsible rganizatin.
    33. What is the purpse f the new study?
    A. T try ut new ways t prtect endangered species.
    B. T find ut the exact number f endangered species.
    C. T check the time needed t save endangered species.
    D. T see if endangered species have been better prtected.
    34. Hw can the study help with animal cnservatin?
    A. It fund ut many mre endangered species.
    B. It pinted ut the directin fr the USFWS t act n.
    C. It prved the rle f the public in cnservatin.
    D. It shwed sme effective ways t prtect animals.
    35. Which f the fllwing culd be the best title fr the text?
    A. The USFWS Needs Strnger Laws
    B. The ESA Has Achieved Great Success
    C. New Cnversatin Laws Are n the Way
    D. Endangered Species Act Isn’t Wrking Well
