A Slar Huse
In 1947, Mária Telkes, tgether with Eleanr Raymnd, invented the wrld’s first mdern residence heated with slar energy. The huse was called Dver Sun Huse, built in Dver, Massachusetts, in 1948. She als invented ther devices capable f string energy captured frm sunlight, and her remarkable achievements made a difference t current slar industry.
A Cmputer Term
Grace Hpper prgrammed fr the earliest cmputer machines. Interestingly, Hpper’s first majr inventin in the field f sftware design was the creatin f a famus cmputer term, “bug”. In 1947, she fund a small mth in the Mark II cmputer, and it was this little bug that was “jamming (卡住)” the machine, Hpper jkingly referred t “failing t wrk” as a “bug”, a strange term that has since develped int a cmputer industry term.
Dish Washing Machine
Alng with anther engineer, Jsephine Cchrane invented the first hand-pwered dish-washer. Patented in 1886, the first dish washing machine cmbined high water pressure, a wheel, a biler, and a wire framewrk like the nes still used fr dish drying. As its inventr, Jsephine Cchrane never used dishwasher herself, but it made thers’ life easier.
Hme Security System
Yu might be surprised t discver that the first hme security system was actually invented by Marie Van Brittan Brwn in 1966. Alngside her husband, she created a system cntaining a sliding camera, a tw-way micrphne, TV mnitrs. There was als an emergency buttn with which the plice culd be cntacted in case f emergencies, and a remte cntrl used t unlck drs.

Marathn is ne f the mst difficult races in track and field, at a little ver 42 kilmeters. T be a wrld-class marathner, yu must run that distance in tw and a half hurs. But fr sme, cmpleting a marathn race is a lifelng dream.
Jacqueline’s dream f being a wrld-class runner began when she was a child in Kenya. She sn realized she had the talent and the willpwer t cmpete. She als knew she wuld have t train full-time, which meant nt being able t wrk t help supprt her family. But she was cnfident that she culd bring hme prize mney.
Jacqueline traveled t China t cmpete in the Zheng-Kai marathn knwing she had a gd sht at winning the race, but mre imprtantly, the $10,000 prize that went with it. She was leading the wmen’s divisin when a male runner arrived at the water statin. The man had truble drinking water because a birth defect(缺陷)had left him withut hands, and he struggled t drink frm a plastic bttle. But any assistance frm fans r race fficials wuld result in his disqualificatin. Jacqueline nticed the man and immediately knew that he needed help. She grabbed a water bttle and helped him get the water his bdy needed t cmplete the race.
Runner after runner passed Jacqueline. Her hpes f winning were getting lst in numerus runners ahead f her. With nly 4 kilmeters left in the race, and certain that the male runner wuld nw finish, Jacqueline picked up her pace and finally finished secnd.
That day, Jacqueline missed ut n first place, but she finished smething mre imprtant: humanity. She returned hme with the smaller prize f secnd place, but t her family, she brught hme smething much mre valuable t hme: the right example.

The cean is critical t all xygen-dependent life. But life is als critical t the cean. The cean prduces s much xygen because f cean plants, which draw dwn C and change it int carbn-based sugars and xygen. Ocean plants are climate change heres! There is nw a wide recgnitin f the rle f cean life in slwing climate change.
On many Pacific islands, whales supprt turism ecnmies. While cncerned abut the impacts f climate change n whales, we als need t recgnize that whales can cntribute t fighting climate change!Thrugh their deep dives, vast migratins, lng lifespan(寿命), and large bdies, whales have an enrmus effect n the cean.
Whales bth help cean plants t draw dwn CO and help t stre carbn in the cean. Firstly, they prvide essential nutrients that enable cean plants t grw. Whale waste is a fertilizer, bringing nutrients frm the depths, where whales feed, t the surface, where plants need these nutrients t grw well. Migratry whales als bring nutrients with them frm highly-prductive feeding grunds t the nutrient-pr waters f whales’ breeding grunds, bsting the grwth f cean plants acrss the cean.
Secndly, whales keep the carbn lcked in the cean, ut f the atmsphere, where it culd therwise cntribute t climate change. Ocean plants prduce carbn-based sugars, but with a very shrt lifespan. They can’t stre the carbn. When they die, much carbn is released in surface waters, and can be changed back t CO2. Whales, hwever, can live fr ver a century, feeding n fd chains that begin with the sugars in these tiny plants, and string up the carbn in their bdies. When whales die, deep cean life feeds n their remains, and the carbn frmerly stred in whales’ bdies can enter sediment(沉淀物), When carbn reaches deep cean sediment, it is effectively lcked away, and therefre unable t drive climate change. This carbn is unlikely t return as CO2 in the atmsphere.
Several Pacific island cuntries are already leaders in whale cnservatin, having declared whale sanctuaries in their waters. Every year, whales scialize, breed, and give birth in Pacific island waters.
8. Hw d surface cean plants get nutrients fr grwth?
A. Frm whale waste.B. Frm the whales’ bdies.
C. Frm the sunlight.D. Frm cean sediment.
9. Why are cean plants unable t stre the carbn?
A. They lack nutrients fr grwth.
B. They never absrb carbn-based sugars.
C. Carbn-based sugars can’t be generated by them.
D. The carbn in them is released after their death.
10. What des the underlined wrd “sanctuaries” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Shelters.B. Imprts.C. Markets.D. Amusements.
11. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The imprtance f ceans t climate.
B. The bad effects f CO2 t climate changes.
C. The rle f whales in slwing climate change.
D. The imprtance f ceans t all xygen-dependent life.
D
Engineering researchers at the University f Waterl are successfully using a rbt t help keep children with learning disabilities fcused n their wrk This was ne f the key results in a new study that als fund bth the yungsters and their instructrs valued the psitive classrm cntributins made by the rbt.
“Overall the findings demnstrate that the rbt has a psitive effect n students,” said Dr. Kerstin Dautenhahn, a prfessr f electrical and cmputer engineering.
Educatrs have in recent years explred the use f scial rbts t help students learn, but mst ften, their research has fcused n children with autism (孤独症). As a result, little wrk has been dne n the use f scially assistive rbts fr students with learning disabilities.
Alng with tw ther Waterl engineering researchers and three experts frm the Learning. Disabilities Sciety in Vancuver, Dautenhahn decided t change this, cnducting a series f tests with a small humanid (仿人的) rbt called QTrbt.
Dautenhahn said the rbt’s ability t perfrm gestures using its head and hands, accmpanied by its speech and facial features, makes it very suitable fr children with learning disabilities.
Building n prmising earlier research, the researchers divided 16 students with learning disabilities int tw grups. In ne grup, students wrked ne n-ne with an instructr nly. In the ther grup, the students wrked ne-n-ne with an instructr and a QTrbt. In the latter grup, the instructr used a tablet t direct the rbt, which then autnmusly perfrmed varius activities using its speech and gestures. While the instructr cntrlled the sessins, the rbt tk ver at certain times t lead the students.
Besides intrducing the sessin, the rbt set gals and prvided self-regulating strategies, if necessary. If the learning prcess was getting ff- track, the rbt used strategies such as games, riddles and physical mvements t redirect the students back t the task.
“Students wh wrked with the rbt” Dautenhahn said, “were generally mre engaged with their tasks and culd cmplete their tasks at a higher rate cmpared t the students wh weren’t assisted by a rbt.
12. What can we knw abut Dautenhahn’s research?
A. It seeks t prvide a treatment fr autism.
B. It attempts t replace teachers with rbts in teaching.
C. It intends t educate students t be creative and prductive.
D. It studies the effects f rbts n students with learning disabilities.
13. What is the sixth paragraph mainly abut?
A. The rle the rbt played.
B. The prcess f the research.
C. The utcmes f the tw grups.
D. The range f the participants invlved.
14. Hw did the QTrbt help distracted students cncentrate in class?
A. It warned the student directly by speech.
B. It assigned tasks fr the student t cmplete.
C. It infrmed the instructr t intervene in the learning prcess.
D. It attracted the student’s attentin thrugh interesting activities.
15. What des Dautenhahn’s research imply?
A. Rbts prmte students’ academic perfrmance greatly.
B. There is great ptential fr using rbts in the educatin system.
C. Teachers are defeated by rbts when it cmes t mtivating students.
D. Students are becming mre independent with the assistance f rbts.
