Recrded lectures have becme a part f curse instructin during the COVID-19 pandemic, and cllege students ften try t watch these recrdings at duble their nrmal speed r even faster. But des cmprehensin (理解) suffer as a result?

Little difference was fund between the nrmal playback speed grup and the 1.5 times r duble speed grups. They all perfrmed similarly n the tests, but the grup watching vides at 2.5 times nrmal speed didn’t d as well. A secnd test a week later saw similar results, suggesting neither shrt- r lng-term cmprehensin was negatively affected by watching vides at faster playback speeds.
“Surprisingly, vide speed had little effect n bth immediate and delayed cmprehensin until learners g beynd twice the nrmal speed,” explains lead authr Dilln Murphy.
Murphy says students shuld be careful abut hw they use faster playback in terms f finding ptimal study strategies. If students chse t speed up lecture playback, Murphy says, they shuld use the time saved fr additinal learning.
“While ur study didn’t shw bvius negative results t watching lecture vides at up t duble the nrmal speed, we are against using this strategy t simply save time,” Murphy says. “Students can deepen learning if they spend the time saved n things like reviewing flashcards r taking practice tests.”
