British researchers say they have created an artificial intelligence (AI) mdel that is highly effective at predicting rainfall within the next 90 minutes.
The mdel was built by scientists at Ggle-wned research cmpany DeepMind in Lndn. The cmpany partnered with researchers at the University f Exeter in Britain and the Met Office, the British gvernment’s natinal weather service. The team says tests f the system shwed it prduced mre accurate predictins, r frecasts, fr shrt-term rainfall than ther existing systems.
Accurate nwcasting can be a very imprtant tl fr preparing fr pssible weather emergencies. It can be used by fficials in the areas f water management, agriculture, air and grund traffic cntrl and utdr event planning. “We were especially interested in the ability f these mdels t make predictins n medium t heavy-rain events, which are the events that mst impact peple and the ecnmy,” the team said. The scientists said their mdel aims t create predictive “mvies” f immediate weather patterns. They said that, unlike ther systems, theirs can accurately capture large-scale events, as well as several different rain pssibilities. During the testing prcess, the team said the mdel shwed “statistically significant” imprvements in these areas cmpared t cmpeting methds.
