The experience was intxicating—like the serius business f exchanging wedding rings, it was a symbl f an unbreakable bnd. Thse bracelets represented hw much we meant t each ther, at a time when ur friends were becming the center f ur lives.
I slept with my bracelets and shwered with them. I wre them all summer lng at camp. And I acquired new bracelets frm friends there—friends wh received carefully crafted bracelets frm me in return, as we said ur tearful end-f-summer gdbyes. My kids dn’t g t summer camp. They certainly dn’t exchange anything as uncl as bracelets with their friends. They hang ut n Discrd (一种聊天工具) in chats that nly pause but never end. Our eldest sn endlessly texts n his cellphne as he and his friends make ne anther talking emjis and TikTk vides.
Their relatinships with their phnes leave n time r space fr writing letters r making bracelets, and their gifts t ne anther leave n clear and definite traces. There will be n bxes f letters t srt years frm nw nr any hidden bracelets t find. They will have little t physically hld n t.

The Best Way t Enjy a Bk
I am n slw eater. I can’t remember the number f times I was tld as a child nt t gbble my fd. Nr have I been a slw reader. I went thrugh bks like cmbine harvesters thrugh crps in the English village f my childhd.
Perhaps I will cntinue t gbble my fd until my last meal n this planet. But bks! They are an entirely different matter. Having been prevented frm visiting bkstres and libraries during these days f islatin. I have decided t make changes. After all, didn’t smene nce say, “It’s an ill wind that blws nbdy any gd.”
I imagine slw reading t be like slw cking: a variety f ingredients mixed int smething ne can truly enjy. Slw reading means enjying each sentence, absrbing all f thse paragraphs f descriptin that had prbably been sweated ver by the authr and, mre ften than nt, skipped ver by readers like me.
This isn’t t say I pay nly randm attentin t a bk. Befre deciding n ne t buy r brrw, I always read the synpsis and the “Abut the Authr” sectin. I wuld als read the dedicatin, the frewrd and the authr’s acknwledgments. Only then d I mve n t the bk’s pening sentence. This is essentially hw I had selected the tw bks that I mst recently finished.
In rder t truly enjy these tw nvels, I ratined my reading t tw hurs a day-n mre and n less. A funny thing happens when yu take tw hurs ut f the day - every day – fr smething yu really, really enjy. I experienced a quiet sense f accmplishment that I had missed fr years.
English writer Kate Atkinsn’s Transcriptin has been advertised as “a nvel f rare depth frm ne f the best writers f ur time.” Award-winning Newfundler Michael Crummey’s The Inncents, meanwhile, is said t be “a richly imagined and fascinating stry f hardship and survival.” I am glad I didn’t read Transcriptin at my usual pace. I suspect I wuld have missed much f the brilliance f the writing. Instead, I made myself cmpletely invlved in the life f 18-year-ld Julie. I ften paused at the end f a chapter t reread it fr the jy f laughing alud at the herine’ bservatins.
The Inncents is abut the life f tw rphans in an islated bay in Newfundland. It was hard nt t run thrugh this pwerful narrative—but I resisted the temptatin. My patience was rewarded with a deeper understanding f the character and rich descriptin f nrthern Newfundland— s real that I culd almst feel the lichen (地衣) between my tes.
S here I am, tw bks finished that tk me a mnth t read. I have been entertained, enriched and transprted in time and place like I never have befre. Having discvered the jys f taking my time ver a bk nw, I dubt I will ever again annunce prudly, “It nly tk me a day r a cuple f hurs t finish!”
12. Accrding t the article, the authr used t ______.
A. read nvels while gbbling her fd.
B. spend n mre than tw hurs reading every day.
C. cnsider it a waste f time t read fictinal stries.
D finish reading a bk in a day r even a cuple f hurs.

A. even the craziest ideas can becme ppular.
B. even the mst ppular ideas can g ut f fashin.

A. imagined herself t be an rphan.
B. ended up with a deep appreciatin f the stry.
C. read thrugh the descriptive part f the bk quickly.
