Brn in 1902, Harry Beck was an English engineering draftsman (制图员) wh brught abut a small revlutin in the early 1930s when he created a cmpletely new map f the Lndn Undergrund.
Befre Beck’s design, early maps were usually drawn t a gegraphically accurate scale (比例). Map designers simply placed the subway lines n standard maps f the city streets. These maps clearly shwed the subway lines that reached the areas utside the centre f Lndn, but they made it difficult t make ut the busy lines that jined directly under central Lndn.
In the 1930s, Beck came up with a slutin that wuld nt take the gegraphical accuracy int accunt. He created a map that was a scaled-dwn linear diagram f the subway lines. Mre a basic utline f the lines than a true-t-life map, it didn’t tell travelers abut hw far it actually was between tw pints. Beck’s map had a clean structure with clured lines. His idea was t create the plainest guide t shw travelers hw t get frm ne statin t anther.
It’s nt clear what inspired him t start the prject; he wasn’t asked t d it, but likely develped his design in his free time, while between jbs. It was mre a presentatin f his being creative, in seeing a prblem and cming up with an answer t it, than a respnse t public demand.
His design was then presented t the Lndn Passenger Transprt Bard, whse members refused t accept it, feeling that nt shwing relative distances between statins was silly and unreasnable. Still, after a time, in rder t increase subway ridership and therefre earn mre mney, the Bard decided t print a limited number f cpies. Gradually, Beck’s map became a huge success.
Fr mst f his life, Beck cntinued t make small imprvements t the diagram, but he kept its basic designs and ideas. His clear diagrammatic methd f mapping has been generally accepted and fllwed in the field f infrmatin design nt nly in Lndn but als arund the wrld.
4. What is the disadvantage f early subway maps?
A. They were nt t scale.B. They were hard t draw.
C. They were nt user-friendly.D. They were seldm updated.
5. Which aspect f a subway map did Beck fcus n?

But Vergauwen said, “This is ne f the best painters ever frm that era. S if he paints it like that, that’s the way it must have been.” Other paintings shwed that bth red and white watermelns were raised during the 17th century.
The team hpes t set up an nline research database f histrical plant artwrk. They create a scial media hashtag (主题标签) fr it. Anyne culd send pictures f relevant artwrk and details f plants when they visit a museum r exhibit thrugh the hashtag. But, they add, the surces need t be realistic. “If yu’re ging t use, fr example, Picass t understand hw a pear lked, yu might be misled.”

Researchers frm the University f Cpenhagen cnducted the Basketball Mathematics study at five Danish primary and elementary schls. The main purpse f it was t develp a learning activity that integrates basketball and mathematics and examine hw it might affect children’s mtivatin fr mathematics.756 children frm 40 different classes participated in the prject, where abut half f them — nce a week fr six weeks — had Basketball Mathematics during gym class, while the ther half played basketball withut mathematics.
“During classes with Basketball Mathematics, the children had t cllect numbers and perfrm calculatins assciated with varius basketball exercises. An example culd be cunting hw many times they culd sink a basket frm three meters away vs at a ne-meter distance, and adding up the numbers. Bth the math and basketball elements culd be adjusted t suit the children’s levels, as well as being adjusted fr whether it was additin, multiplicatin r sme ther peratins that needed t be practiced,” explains Linn Damsgaard, a leading researcher.
The results shwed that children’s mtivatin fr math integrated with basketball was 16% higher cmpared t classrm math learning. Children als experienced a 14% increase in self-determinatin cmpared with classrm teaching. Meanwhile Basketball Mathematics imprved their math cnfidence.
“We are planning t d research t examine whether the Basketball Mathematics mdel can strengthen perfrmance in mathematics. Once we have the final results, we hpe that they will inspire schl teachers and principals t priritize (优先处理) mre physical activity and mvement in such subjects. Eventually, we hpe t succeed in putting these tls int schl system and teacher educatin,” says Assciate Prfessr Jacb Wienecke.
