One f the mst curius features f the mdern wrld is the manner in which design has been widely transfrmed int smething meaningless. But I want t argue design shuld be the crucial blck n which the human envirnment is shaped and cnstructed fr the betterment and delight f all.
Nt surprisingly, in the absence f widespread agreement abut its significance and value, much cnfusin surrunds design practice. In sme subject areas, authrs can assume cmmn grund with readers. Other subject areas can be s difficult that h such mutual understanding exists.
Design sits uncmfrtably between these tw extremes. As a wrd it is cmmn enugh, but it is full f disharmny, has innumerable manifestatins (表现), and lacks bundaries that give clarity and definitin. As a practice, design generates vast quantities f material, much f it ephemeral, nly a small prprtin f which has sustained quality.
S hw can design be understd in a meaningful sense? Design is ne f the basic characteristics f what it is t be human, and an essential determinant f the quality f human life. If things are a necessary part f ur existence, why are they ften dne s badly? There is n simple answer. Cst factrs are smetimes advanced, but the remve between ding smething well r badly can be exceedingly small, and cst factrs can in fact be reduced by apprpriate design inputs.
This bk is based n a belief that design matters prfundly t us all in innumerable ways and represents an area f huge, underutilized ptential in life. It sets ut t explre sme reasns why this is s and t suggest sme pssibilities f change. The intentin is t extend the range f what is understd by the term, and examine the depth f design practice as it affects everyday life in a diversity f cultures.
    8. What is paragraph 2 f the text mainly abut?
    A. The causes f cnfusin.B. The significance f design.
    C. The differences in subjects.D. The cmmn grund in peple.
    9. What des the underlined wrd “ephemeral” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A Meaningful.B. Enrmus.C. Shrt-lived.D. Hard-wearing.
    10. What d we knw abut design?
    A. Design is just abut arts r trends.
    B. Cst factrs accunt fr inadequate design.
    C. The authr argues that design is meaningless .
    D. Very few are incapable f imprvement by prper design.
    11. What is the bk aimed at?
    A. Reducing design inputs.B. Persisting in meaningful design practices.
    C. Denying previus cnceptin f design.D. Clarifying the cnfusin surrunding design.
    D
If yu are a psychlgy enthusiast, yu have prbably heard f the famus marshmallw (棉花糖) test. In this task, kids are given a single treat, such as a marsbmallw, and are tld that they can eat that marshmallw nw, r they can wait a little while, and have tw marshmallws instead. Sme kids eat the marshmallw immediately, but mst try their best t wait fr the experimenter t cme back with tw marshmallws.
Wait times in the marshmallw test came t be seen as indicatrs f self-cntrl. But what if the behavir in the marshmallw test has mre t d with cultural criteria than self-cntrl? A 2022 study by Yanaka tested the idea that children may decide hw lng t wait fr rewards based n what they are accustmed t waiting fr in their culture. In the United States (with sme exceptins), there is n widespread custm f waiting until everyne is served t eat yur fd. Hwever, in Japan, there is a mealtime custm f waiting until everyne has been served befre anyne digs in.
Because f this difference in nrms, the researchers assumed that Japanese children wuld wait lnger in the marshmallw test than the American children. This is exactly what they fund. The researchers did a clever fllw-up experiment. They fund ne field where children in the U.S. are accustmed t waiting lnger than Japanese children are: Opening presents. In the U.S., gifts are usually given n special ccasins, such as birthdays and Christmas. On these ccasins, children usually have t wait befre they can pen their presents. In Japan, hwever, gift-giving happens mre ften, and children usually pen presents immediately.
Given these cultural differences, Yanaka expected that if they ran the marshmallw test with Japanese and American kids, but they replaced marshmallws with packaged gifts, then American kids wuld wait lnger t pen them. Once again, their assumptin was crrect. When the ptential rewards were packaged gifts instead f fd, American children waited 15 minutes n average, and Japanese children waited abut fur minutes n average.
This is a pwerful result because it demnstrates the imprtance f culture and habit in shaping behavir. If a child waits nly fur minutes befre giving up n tw marshmallws but then waits almst fur times lnger t pen a gift, can we really say that that child lacks self-cntrl? I dn’t think s.
    12. What is the main factr that influences children’s behavir in the experiments?
    A. Self-cntrl.B. Parental influence.
    C. Cultural criteria.D. Reward preferences.
    13. What did the study find abut American children?
    A. They ften receive gifts.B. They display higher self-cntrl.
C They prefer gifts t fd rewards.D. Thy tend t wait lnger t pen gifts.
    14. Hw did Yanaka cnduct the fllw-up experiment?
    A. By referring t data.B. By making a cmparisn.
    C. By intrducing a cncept.D. By presenting an argument.
    15. What is the authr’s attitude twards Yanaka’s study?
    A. Critical.B. Unclear.C. Dubtful.D. Apprving.
